  • Patent number: 7551147
Abstract: An antenna for a magnetic resonance unit has a number of antenna rods arranged substantially regularly around an antenna axis, and being axially oriented relative to said antenna axis. Each antenna rod has two opposite ends with a central portion therebetween. The ends of each rod are electrically connected with the ends of at least one adjacent antenna rod by connecting elements oriented tangentially relative to the antenna axis. The rods are symmetrical relative to a plane of symmetry that proceeds perpendicularly relative to the antenna axis. Each point of each antenna rod defines a radial direction with the antenna axis, and the central portion defines a reference direction with respect to the antenna axis. Each radial direction forms a tangential angle with the reference direction, which is a non-constant function of the axial spacing of each point from the central portion of that rod.

Abstract: The present invention provides systems and methods that facilitate transmission and/or reception of radio frequency (RF) signals within a mobile communications device. The systems and methods include a first antenna component such as an active stub that comprises one or more active elements and a second antenna component such as a parasitic whip that is electromagnetically coupled to the first antenna component. The systems and methods provide a relatively compact antenna structure for mobile devices with limited physical volume, or footprint. The antenna structure does not require a mechanical interface (e.g., a galvanic connection) between the active stub and parasitic whip to provide a conductive connection to the whip when it is in an extended position. The novel systems and methods yield reduced antenna wear, higher antenna gain and better radiation efficiency than conventional systems and do not require a matching circuit to achieve multi-band resonances.

Abstract: A multiband element antenna (120) used in combination with a unique metal chassis design that enhances antenna performance and that enables the design of a compact and efficient antenna system. A cellular flip phone (100) that has a conductive chassis includes a flip up antenna (120) that pivots between an extended and a retracted position. The antenna (120) pivots at a point that is located on one edge of the top of the cell phone body (102). The conductive chassis of the flip cover (104) is grounded to the flip phone body (102) at a single point or single surface that is substantially opposite the antenna RF feed (122). Conductive surfaces of the cellular flip phone body (102) are grounded at a single point that is near the antenna RF feed point (122). This grounding arrangement has been found to control the flow of induced currents on the conductive portions of the flip cover (104) and body (102), thereby improving the performance of the device's antenna (120).

A signal evaluator determines or measures a signal quality level associated with the received electromagnetic signal. The signal quality compares the determined signal quality level to a threshold minimum signal quality level. A current elevational position of the antenna mast is detected or tracked. The antenna mast is raised to a greater height than the current elevational position if the compared signal quality level is less than the threshold minimum signal quality level and if the current elevational position is less than a maximum height of the antenna mast.
