Abstract: An intelligent color gamut management method. The intelligent color gamut management method performs a saturation mapping and a luminance mapping separately according to a characteristic of a target device, thereby enabling the target device to represent a natural color image. Accordingly, it is possible to reduce color reproduction distortion of an image between different color devices having different color gamuts and also reproduce a natural color image, and also, secondary CMY colors, which vary depending on a color temperature, can be adjusted to be more natural. Since the color gamut boundary can be easily obtained, a memory capacity can be saved a freedom of algorithm can be increased.

Abstract: Techniques and tools for representing pixel data in a video processing or capture system are described. Described techniques and tools provide efficient color representation for video processing and capture, and provide flexibility for representing colors using different bit precisions and memory layouts. Described techniques and tools include video formats that can be used, for example, in hardware or software for capture, processing, and display purposes. In one aspect, chroma and luma information for a pixel in a video image is represented in a 16-bit fixed-point block of data having an integer and fractional components. Data can be easily converted from one representation to another (e.g., between 16-bit and 10-bit representations). In other aspects, formats for representing 8-, 10- and 16-bit video image data (e.g., packed and hybrid planar formats), and codes for indicating the formats, are described.

Abstract: An image data processing method transforms a picture signal having a broad dynamic range to another picture signal having a narrow dynamic range. The picture signal having the narrow dynamic range is subjected to inverse transform to thereby output a recovered signal having the broad dynamic range. A difference between the original picture signal and the recovered signal, both having the broad dynamic range, is produced and then stored in a recording medium as difference data. A parameter for software processing to be executed for reproduction of the original picture signal later is also stored in the recording medium. In this way, the method can transform the original data with the broad dynamic range to the data of a standard file format with the narrow dynamic range, record the transformed data, and allow the original data to be recovered and effectively used later, as desired.

Abstract: Validating a color that is selected in an authoring environment for display in a destination media environment includes selecting a color for an application, converting the values of the color to those in a fundamental color space, and converting the values from the fundamental color space to those in a color space corresponding to the destination media environment. Validity of the selected color in the destination media environment depends on the component values in the destination media environment being within an acceptable range of values.

Abstract: Video conversion using a 3D graphics pipeline of a graphical processing unit (GPU) is disclosed. A plurality of video data formatted in a first video format is accessed from a memory unit. Moreover, the plurality of video data is converted from the first video format to a second video format using a 3D graphics pipeline of the GPU. The plurality of video data formatted in the second video format is sent to the memory unit. The 3D graphics pipeline applies a filtering technique. In an embodiment, the filtering technique is an interpolation technique.

  • Patent number: 7379073
Abstract: A method of restoring RGB gray scale data for maintaining a sharpness of a screen and reducing a size of a memory is disclosed. The RGB gray scale data having M bits are truncated to generate a first RGB gray scale data having N bits, M being a positive integer and N being an integer less than M. RGB gray scale data information is generated based on a bit information of the first RGB gray scale data. A bit value of a MSB of the first RGB gray scale data is compared with a value of a dither table based on the RGB gray scale data information to generate a comparison value, when a bit value of at least one bit of the first RGB gray scale data is different from other bit values of the first RGB gray scale data. The first RGB gray scale data are compensated based on the RGB gray scale data information and the comparison value. Thus, the sharpness of a screen may be maintained and the size of the memory may be reduced.

Abstract: A video controller may include at least one video input port which may be programmably configured to receive either RGB or non-RGB color space signals. The video controller may programmably operate in either an RGB or non-RGB mode. In this way, the number of color space conversions may be reduced in some embodiments. For example, where a television output device is coupled to the video controller, the video controller may provide a non-RGB output signal.

  • Patent number: 7365754
Abstract: A system and method for image acquisition enables selective automated application of color management to color image data generated by an image-capturing device by the device driver for the device. In the image acquisition system, each image-capturing device has properties or operation parameters that can be set to control the operation of the device. During an image acquisition operation, color image data generated by the image-capturing device are transmitted to the device driver. If the operation parameters of the device are set to indicate that color management is to be performed, the device driver calls color management functions provided by the operating system to perform the desired color operation, such as a color space conversion, on the received color image data. The processed color image data are then sent to the image-processing application for further processing or editing.

Abstract: As a method of calibrating colors other than primary colors such as secondary colors, the contents of an ink color-separation table are reconstructed. However, it is difficult to reconstruct the ink color-separation table within the limitation of total ink amount permissible for a print sheet. Accordingly, a color patch corresponding to a signal value of a color to be calibrated is formed in a printer, then the signal value is calibrated based on a measured color value of the formed color patch and a target value corresponding to the signal value of the color to be calibrated, and calibration multidimensional table data is generated based on the measured color value of the formed color patch.

  • Patent number: 7336287
Abstract: A video and graphics system provides square graphics pixels to blend images having 640×480 pixels, such as graphics images provided by some set top boxes and intended to be displayed at a 12.27 MHz display sample rate, with images having 704×480 pixels, such as ITU-R 601 compliant images such as NTSC SDTV images, having oblong pixels and displayed at a 13.5 MHz display sample rate. A sample rate converter including a multi-phase-multi-tap filter is used to generate square pixels. The multi-phase-multi-tap filter provides a good balance of sharpness, smoothness, anti-aliasing and reduced ringing. The multi-phase-multi-tap filter can also be used to convert images having 320×480 pixels to images having 704×480 pixels. The multi-tap filter can be used for scan rate conversion of graphics or video images for HDTV or SDTV applications.
