  • Patent number: 6856326
Abstract: A system and method for smooth scrolling a document and/or window within a graphical user interface is disclosed. The present invention in some preferred embodiments permits augmentation of traditional LINE UP/DOWN, PAGE UP/DOWN, and manual THUMBTRACK scrolling with a smooth scrolling alternative that augments additional hardware input features that may be present on several user input devices such a mouse, trackball, touchpad, Thinkpoint™ pointing device and the like. The present invention generally solves the problem associated with providing the user the proper degree of scrolling feedback within the graphical user environment, irrespective of the size of the document being viewed.

  • Patent number: 6686928
Abstract: A system for displaying textual information includes a receiver (300) for receiving textual information that includes a plurality of words. A text segmenter (302), operatively associated with the receiver (300), segments the plurality of words into a plurality of word segments, each word segment having one or more words. A user interface device (304) receives a signal initiated by an action of a user to indicate a display rate. A display device (306) including a processor and a memory, is coupled to the text segmenter and the user interface device. The display device (306) displays the word segments in a temporal sequence by displaying a first word segment for a first display duration, that is based on the display rate, at a first position on the display device (306) and automatically proceeding to display a second word segment for a second display duration, that is based on the display rate, at a second position on the display device (306).

  • Patent number: 6509907
Abstract: A communication terminal having a display capable of scrolling a text message at variable speeds to thereby enhance message readability. A display of 6 full-size characters×3 lines for displaying a character message is provided on the portable telephone. Tactile sensors for changing scroll display speed are provided on the sides of the portable telephone. The top of a long text message is paused for two seconds, and then vertically scrolled on the display. While the message is scrolled at a speed of 1 dot per 20 ms during normal operation, the display scrolling speed is changed to 1 dot per 60 ms when the tactile sensor is manipulated. The message is paused for 0.7 seconds every time one line of the message has completed scrolling. When the end of the message is reached, it is displayed for 1 second.

  • Patent number: 6449517
Abstract: A technique for collectively setting a factory mode of operation of a monitor offers adjustments or modifications for particulars of mode data to meet user requirements, by transmitting a set of factory mode timing data from an external controller to an electrically erasable programmable read only memory using a serial interface data communication. A factory mode data transmission process includes the steps of transmitting a start data signal to a microcomputer in a monitor when a storage key input is fed to the external controller, repeatedly sending the timing data until a mode end signal is input and sending a mode end data to the microcomputer when a mode end signal is input. In addition, a factory mode data receiving process includes the steps of sending back the start data received to the external controller, storing mode timing data received into a factory mode address reserved in a memory in the monitor and ending the reception of mode timing data when mode end data is inputted.

  • Patent number: 6441824
Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining a format for displaying information in a display area coupled to a computer system, the format being based on the size of the display area and the amount of information to display. As a user continues to enter information in the display area, software program instructions update the format of the information when the amount of information to display changes. This includes reducing the size of the font as additional information is entered and enlarging the size of the font when enough information is deleted to create available space. The font type and/or the font size may be changed to allow the information to fit within the available display area. The size of the text may be reduced to a minimum level and, and as more information is entered, the display is scrolled so the user may view the most recently entered data. A scale also be determined to reduce or enlarge graphics information so that it fits within the available display area.
