Patent number: 4503445Abstract: Pressure transients are used to produce motion for high speed printing of DOTS; in a first embodiment each printing element in an array of printing elements has the form of an angled rigid tube sealed at the ends; one end is fixed, the other end is free to move; the tube is filled with suitable fluid and has two electrodes associated with it and the fluid; a spark across the electrodes on demand produces a pressure transient by expanding the fluid, in turn tending to straighten or otherwise suitably deform the angled tube in a direction advancing the free end for printing; in a second embodiment employing ink as the fluid, a ball point pen arrangement dispenses ink as the second end advances on spark actuation.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1983Date of Patent: March 5, 1985Inventor: Robert Fridman

Patent number: 4425796Abstract: A hermetically sealed tank gauge apparatus which continuously monitors the fluid level in a closed crude oil tank. A sensor device measures the liquid level in the tank. The sensor device communicates with the interior of the tank, and is isolated from ambient, so that no dangerous gases can escape from the tank, through the tank gauge apparatus, and into the surrounding atmosphere. The sensor device is arranged to continuously drive a recorder apparatus in response to change in liquid level thereof so that the quantity of fluid flowing into and out of the tank over a long interval of time can be ascertained. The sensor device and the recorder are tamper proof and enable accurate records of tank contents to be recorded.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1982Date of Patent: January 17, 1984Inventors: Harry Boucher, Jack L. Hubbard

Patent number: 4296758Abstract: A spirometer having an inflatable bellows 2, is provided with a movable member 15 which runs along a track 16. By adjusting parts 17, the configuration of the track is set locally to give a variable resistance to movement of member 15 and, consequently, inflation of the bellows 2. Calibration is achieved in a simple manner by adjusting parts 17 as the bellows is inflated progressively with measured amounts of air. Adjustments made correctly are not upset by adjustments made later in the calibration operation.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1979Date of Patent: October 27, 1981Inventor: Dietmar R. Garbe

Patent number: 4270381Abstract: An instrument to accept multiple microbal samples and measure the gaseous products produced thereby as a function of time. Each sample module provides a closed reactional vessel communicating to a liquid reservoir from which displaced liquid passes to a vertical measuring column wherein it activates a float which moves a marker responsive to volume of gas produced in the reaction vessel. Plural sample modules are combined so that markers of all move in a parallel direction upon a recording sheet moved perpendicularly thereto to provide a record of gas formation as a function of time. The instrument is particularly adapted to measure the activity of a yeast activated fermentation process as in bread making.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1979Date of Patent: June 2, 1981Inventor: David E. Demaray

Patent number: 4200876Abstract: A water level recorder for use with pressure-sensitive chart paper and having a framework with a lead screw rotatably mounted in the framework. A pulley is secured to the lead screw. The pulley is driven by a tape which is positioned by a float that is adapted to rest upon the surface of the water. A lead screw nut is mounted on the lead screw for movement longitudinally of the lead screw as the lead screw is rotated. A marking member for marking the chart paper is carried by the lead screw nut. A drum is secured to the lead screw for rotation with the lead screw. A helix for marking the chart paper is formed on the drum. Chart paper drive means is provided for advancing the chart paper over the helix and the marking member.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1978Date of Patent: April 29, 1980Assignee: Systron-Donner CorporationInventors: John D. Patent number: 4112761Abstract: This invention relates to an apparatus for measuring and recording the changes in magnitude of a variable. The apparatus includes a recording stylus or pencil and a means for carrying a recording medium such as marking paper. The stylus or the means for carrying is connected to a transducer means which follows the changes in magnitude and provides an output to drive the stylus along the width of the paper in one direction when the magnitude is increasing and in the other direction when the magnitude is decreasing. In addition, either the stylus or the means for carrying the paper are connected to rotating means which rotate in one direction only and which are also driven by the output of the transducer. As the rotating means rotates in one direction only, the stylus will produce a straight line along the width of the paper when the output of the transducer is in one direction, and a straight line at an angle to the first line, when the output of the transducer is in the opposite direction.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1977Date of Patent: September 12, 1978Inventors: Bernard H. Engelhardt, Marcus Mintz

Patent number: 4040064Abstract: A signal actuated recorder device has a recording drum connected to be actuated only when sensing a signal. The recorder is connected to measure the torque employed to make up joints of tubular goods into a string, for example, and can also be used in other applications, such as the testing of joints of pipe.In making up a string of production tubing, a hydraulic strain gauge assembly is connected to the tubing tongs to measure the magnitude of torque imparted into the tubular goods. The pressure signal from the piston of the gauge actuates a motor of the recorder which advances the drum one increment. At the same time, the pressure signal is utilized to move a scribe in proportion to the magnitude of the signal.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1976Date of Patent: August 2, 1977Inventor: Harry Boucher

Patent number: 4036055Abstract: This invention relates to a liquid level measuring and recording apparatus which includes a recording stylus or pencil and a means for retaining a record such as marking paper. The stylus is connected to a float means which follows the level of the liquid and drives the stylus along the width of the paper in one direction when the level is rising and in the other direction when the level is following. In addition, either the stylus or the paper are connected to rotating means which rotate in one direction only and which are also driven by the up and down movement of the float. As the rotating means rotates in one direction only, the stylus will produce a straight line along the width of the paper when the float is moving in the non-rotating direction, and a straight line at an angle to the first line, when the float is moving in the rotating direction.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1976Date of Patent: July 19, 1977Assignee: Bernard J. EngelhardtInventors: Bernard H. Engelhardt, Marcus Mintz

Patent number: 3985124Abstract: A spirometer for measurement of both the rate and volume of expiratory breathing, and creating a graphic record of the same. In a preferred embodiment, the spirometer incorporates an expansible chamber of the piston type, fitted with a molded rolling rubber seal. A recording surface in the form of a card is attached to the piston and a pen is moved across the face of the card at a constant velocity as a subject breathes into the expansible chamber. There is obtained a plot of the volume of expiration flow as a function of time. A control system provides for automatic operation.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1975Date of Patent: October 12, 1976Assignee: Thermo Electron CorporationInventor: Steven J. Coleman

Patent number: 3973265Abstract: The temperature Recording instrument contains the usual thermal measuring system consisting of a bellows assembly, a temperature sensitive bulb and capillary tubing between the bellows and bulb and a recording system including a marking element which is responsive to the energization of the bellows for permanently indicating the temperature sensed by the bulb on chart paper mounted on a base plate located in the instrument housing. A fulcrum having an axis extends through the base plate and carries a bracket which is provided with one slot or with a pair of slots on opposite sides of the axis. A spool is located in one or the other of the slots. An adjusting screw is carried by the bracket and is threadedly connected to the spool. Rotation of the adjusting screw is effective to move the spool in the corresponding slot relative to the fulcrum's axis. The marking element is located on the chart side of the base plate and is secured to the bracket.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1975Date of Patent: August 3, 1976Assignee: H. O.
