  • Patent number: 7591550
Abstract: An ink jet printer includes an ink supply system and a printhead with nozzles for ejecting ink drops. The printer determines the average size of the ejected ink drops by comparing the number of ink drops ejected in a predetermined time with the quantity of ink delivered through the printers ink supply system during that time. If the determined average ink drop size does not match predetermined ink drop size criteria, the printer adjusts the activation signals for the ink jet nozzles to alter the ink drop size. A solid ink printer determines the quantity of ink delivered through the ink supply system by counting the number of whole or partial ink sticks that pass a predetermined point in the ink supply system. The counter detects a sensing element formed on an external surface of the ink stick. Exemplary detectors include a mechanical arm, or a thermistor to detect a change in the printer melt plate temperature due to a change in the cross sectional area of an ink stick being melted.

  • Patent number: 7524048
Abstract: A process for printing images and subsequently bonding the image to a substrate by activating bonding through the application of energy. An ink may comprise reactive functional groups that are blocked to prevent reaction of reactive components during printing of the image by the digital imaging device. The ink is solid at ambient temperature, and may be liquefied after the ink is installed in the digital imaging device. Heat used to achieve phase change of the ink does not disable, by removal or otherwise, the blocking agent. After the image is printed by the imaging device, the reactive components are activated by an energy source, which may be heat, to promote chemical cross-linking and bonding of the image permanently onto a substrate. The substrate may be an intermediate substrate that provides a transfer sheet for subsequent transfer of the image to a final substrate. The formed image, including the colorant, is bonded to the substrate by the reactive components.

Abstract: A high resolution ink jet printer includes a rotating drum and a pair of ink jet heads scanned along a substrate carried by the drum in a direction parallel to the axis of the drum. The heads are driven by a lead screw coupled to the drum drive shaft and a control unit controls the rate of drop ejection from the printheads at a rate corresponding to the rate of encoder signals received from an encoder coupled to the drum drive draft. One printhead receives and ejects drops of black, magenta, cyan and yellow high-density inks and the other printhead ejects drops of black, magenta and cyan low-density inks along with another ink which may be a different color or black ink of a different density. High resolution and high print quality are assured by accurate control of the distance between the drum support shaft and the drum surface and also between the drum support shaft and a carriage support rail on which the printhead is supported as it moves adjacent to the drum surface.
