Abstract: A method and a system for forming an image of a scene are provided. The method includes capturing an image of the scene by exposing an image sensor to radiation from one part of the EM spectrum using one aperture and to radiation from another part of the EM spectrum using another aperture having a different size than the first aperture. Simultaneously with capturing the image, the scene is illuminated with radiation from the second part of the EM spectrum. The image is then formed on the basis of image data generated by the radiation from the first part of the EM spectrum and image data generated by radiation from the second part of the EM spectrum.

  • Patent number: 8902328
Abstract: A method for selecting an optimum subset of images from a larger set of images for optimal HDR image creation. For each of the set of images, an exposure quality map is computed by assigning, to each pixel of the image, an exposure quality value based on the pixel brightness value of that pixel. A suitable exposure quality function, typically reflecting the properties of the imaging device, is used for this purpose. Then, for each possible subset of images, the exposure quality maps for the images in the subset are combined using a max operation to generate a combined exposure quality map for the subset. An average pixel value of the combined exposure quality map of the subset is then calculated and serves as a quality score. The subset of images processing the highest quality score are used to generate the HDR image.

A face detection unit (8) detects a face area from an image captured by the imaging unit (2). The weighting processing unit (12) applies a weighting process to luminance data of the long exposure signal in the detected face area using a weighting constant for reducing the luminance level of the long exposure signal. If the luminance level of the weighting-processed long exposure signal rises to a predetermined saturation level or higher, an exposure control unit (15) performs exposure control using the long exposure signal and the short exposure signal. The HDR synthesizing circuit 19 includes a valid pixel selecting unit 34, a sensitivity ratio correcting unit 35, and a calculation processing unit 36. The valid pixel selecting unit 34 selects one or more small pixels validating a use of a signal value in the HDR synthesis as a valid pixel from among the small pixel group. The sensitivity ratio correcting unit 35 executes sensitivity ratio correction on the signal value of each small pixel. The calculation processing unit 36 uses the signal value of the valid pixel among the signal values of the small pixels from the sensitivity ratio correcting unit 35 for a calculation for the HDR synthesis.

Abstract: An imaging apparatus performs a focus detecting operation with an image sensor including a photoelectric conversion portion that has a pupil-dividing function. The imaging apparatus increases a line addition number according to a target exposure value corresponding to a pixel dynamic range that is variable depending on an exposure setting value. Thus, the imaging apparatus can reduce the amount of noise and can suppress the dispersion of focus detection result. Further, the imaging apparatus changes the line addition number according to a lens diaphragm aperture size, a defocus amount, or a pixel signal reading mode. Thus, the imaging apparatus can secure the resolution in the vertical direction and can prevent the detection accuracy from deteriorating even in a case where a photographic subject is obliquely positioned in a focus detection area.
