Abstract: Methods and systems for capturing an image of a moving subject employ a camera image sensor that captures a blurred image of a moving subject. In-capture positions of the moving object are also determined using a high frame rate camera or other motion sensing device. The PSF for controlling modulation of the light hitting the camera image is successively updated by selecting, from among a plurality of pre-computed invertible PSFs, a pre-computed invertible PSFs for each estimated motion of the moving object. Light hitting the camera image sensor is modulated in capture phase according to one or more of the updated pre-computed invertible PSFs such that the captured blurred image is invertible. Abstract: A method for reducing smear effects of a dynamic image is for an image sensor. The image sensor converts a shot image picture into image data, and the image data is divided into an effective region, an upper optical black region (UOB), and a lower optical black region (LOB). The method includes capturing two continuous image data to serve as a first frame image and a second frame image; calculating brightness difference values between individual pixels at corresponding pixel positions of the LOB of the first frame image and the UOB of the second frame image; comparing the brightness difference values with a threshold; obtaining positions to be compensated in the UOB of the second frame image, when the UOB of the second frame image requires brightness compensation; and compensating brightness values of pixels in the effective region of the second frame image corresponding to the positions to be compensated.

Abstract: A method is disclosed as including scanning a first pixel of an image with a primary scanning line of a sensor, and scanning a second pixel of the image with a secondary scanning line of the sensor, wherein the first pixel is separated from the second pixel by a pitch of one or more scan lines. A compensation value is determined for one or more pixels of the image, wherein the compensation value is determined based, at least in part, on a mathematical operation comprising pixel values associated with the first and second pixels and the pitch. The method further includes compensating the one or more pixel values based, at least in part, on the compensation value, wherein the compensation value compensates for a reflection of light between the first and second scanning lines when the first and second pixels are scanned.

Abstract: An image sensor has at least two photodiodes in each unit pixel. A high dynamic range is achieved by selecting different exposure times for the photodiodes. Additionally, blooming is reduced. The readout timing cycle is chosen so that the short exposure time photodiodes act as drains for excess charge overflowing from the long exposure time photodiodes. To improve draining of excess charge, the arrangement of photodiodes may be further selected so that long exposure time photodiodes are neighbored along vertical and horizontal directions by short exposure time photodiodes. A micro-lens array may also be provided in which light is preferentially coupled to the long exposure time photodiodes to improve sensitivity.

Abstract: Apparatus for inspecting a solid-state image pickup device comprises: a memory for saving an image data from the solid-state image pickup device; an arithmetic operation part that performs predetermined image processing on the image data saved in the memory and outputting an evaluation value; and a controller that judges whether the solid-state image pickup device is good based on the evaluation value. The arithmetic operation part adds image data values saved in the memory in the column direction (extension direction of a vertical charge transfer path) to obtain a column-based addition value. The arithmetic operation part then obtains difference data from the adjacent value, counts the number of difference data items contained in the plurality of specified level regions, and obtains the evaluation value based on the sum total of the products of level information and count in the level regions.

Abstract: In order to halt smear sweep-out in a case where the effects of smear charge are considered minor, it is determined whether the shutter is a high-speed shutter when a shutter-release button is pressed. If the shutter is not the high-speed shutter, a CCD is exposed and signal charge accumulates in the photodiodes of the CCD. Smear charge is swept out before the signal charge is shifted from the photodiodes to vertical transfer lines. The signal charge is thenceforth transferred to the vertical transfer lines and a video signal is output from the CCD. In the case of the high-speed shutter, smear sweep-out is halted and charge is shifted from the photodiodes to the vertical transfer lines.
