Abstract: A non-text notification bubble or other graphical object can be presented during an augmented reality, mixed reality, or virtual reality simulation to notify a user that a real-world object is approaching or has crossed a boundary for an interaction space within which the user is to interact with the simulation. Responsive to the system identifying the user as looking at the bubble or other graphical object, the system may then present another notification about the real-world object approaching or crossing the boundary. The real-world object may be an intrusion into the interaction space, such as a human or animal crossing into the space.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a video encoder generates an encoded bitstream representing a sequence of video frames including a keyframe. The encoder generates information for use by a decoder that receives the encoded bitstream to enable the decoder to generate display frames from a pre-keyframe video frame that is prior to the keyframe in the sequence of video frames. The encoded bitstream is sent to the decoder. In another embodiment, a video decoder receives from an encoder an encoded bitstream representing a sequence of video frames including a keyframe. The keyframe includes information to enable the decoder to generate display frames from a pre-keyframe video frame that was received prior to the keyframe in the sequence of video frames. The decoder generates display frames using the pre-keyframe video frame, information included with the keyframe and information included with an encoder-determined number of decoded frames subsequent to the keyframe.

Abstract: In a digital broadcast communications system, a higher priority component and a lower priority component are broadcast from a transmitter to a receiver. Each of these components generates a main and a supplemental signal, and each supplemental signal is advanced in time with respect to the corresponding main signal. The main and supplemental signals for both the higher and lower priority components are combined into a single signal, which is broadcast to a receiver. In the receiver, the time advanced supplemental signals are stored in a buffer to time align them with their corresponding main signals. Both main signals are processed in the normal manner in the receiver, and are also monitored to detect a fading event. When a fading event is detected, the corresponding buffered supplemental signals are substituted for the faded main signals and normal processing continues.

Abstract: The invention relates to digital signal terrestrial transmission systems operating in accordance with the MPEG2-TS standard and the DVB-T standard. The system comprises: N transmitters (12, 14) or transmission channels operating respectively at N different frequencies F1 to FN, each transmitter receiving a same digital signal to send in the form of packets in accordance with the MPEG2-TS standard, N receivers (22R, 24R) or receiving channels operating respectively at N frequencies F1 to FN, each receiver supplying a succession of packets in accordance with the MPEG2-TS standard, N error detection devices (22E, 24E) for detecting errors in the packets supplied by each receiver, N synchronization devices (22S, 24S) for synchronizing the packets supplied by each receiver, and a device for selecting one packet among the N available packets that does not contain an error or, failing that, a packet that corresponds to the lowest error rate.

  • Patent number: 6721362
Abstract: Error detection is added to a motion-picture-experts group (MPEG) decoder by checking each 8×8-pixel block for constraints. The constraints are added during compression by adjusting discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients in the block to meet a constraint. When the decoder determines that the constraint is not met by the DCT coefficients, an error is signaled for that block. The error can then be concealed using pixels from another frame or block. In one embodiment, the constraint is that the last two non-zero coefficients have the same magnitude. The constraint is added during compression after quantization but before variable-length coding by averaging the magnitudes and using the average magnitude for the last two non-zero coefficients. This minimizes visible distortion caused by the constraints and reduces computations.

The MPEG video decoding system does not reset the video buffer during the overflow period, which allows a decoding of the data already stored in the video buffer, thereby minimizing the loss of data due to an overflow.

Abstract: A picture reducing circuit 1 reduces a supplied original picture. An upper hierarchical level picture memory 2 stores an input upper hierarchical level picture. A predictive tap obtaining circuit 3 extracts a predictive tap from the upper hierarchical level picture stored in the upper hierarchical level picture memory 2 and outputs the extracted predictive tap to a predictive coefficient calculating circuit 4, a pixel value updating circuit 5, and a mapping circuit 6. The predictive coefficient calculating circuit 4 generates an observation equation using the predictive tap as student data and pixels of an original picture corresponding thereto as teacher data, solves the observation equation, and generates predictive coefficients.

  • Patent number: 6404817
Abstract: A video decoder is provided with robust error handling and concealment. In one embodiment, the video decoder detects syntactic, semantic, and coding errors in encoded slices of macroblocks. An error handler determines the number of remaining un-decoded macroblocks in the corrupted slice and replaces these corrupted macroblocks using substitute DCT coefficient matrices and motion vectors. The zero-frequency DCT coefficient of each substitute matrix is set equal to the zero-frequency DCT coefficient of the last uncorrupted macroblock, while the higher frequency DCT coefficients are set equal to zero. The substitute motion vectors are provided from a concealment vector memory which buffers the motion vectors of the previous macroblock row. In this way, intelligent approximations are made for the missing macroblocks, effectively masking the video bitstream error.

Abstract: A decoding method includes using a plurality of first bitstreams that are obtained by dividing a main bitstream with a hierarchical structure as inputs, successively arranging the plurality of first bitstreams and arranging selected second bitstreams before first hierarchical information of specified bitstreams among bitstreams constituting a specified hierarchy in the main bistream. Each second bitstream includes at least one of a plurality of codes including portions of the second bitstreams that do not corresond to specified code tables that are used for decoding bistreams, thereby forming a third bitstream.

Abstract: In a video decoding device for decoding a coded video signal which is supplied as packets each of which containing a plurality of coded block data units which have been generated by encoding blocks each of which is composed of a predetermined number of pixels of a frame of a video signal, an error detection section conducts error detection for each packet by use of error detection code which has been contained in the packet. A packet partitioning section partitions the packet into the coded block data units, while outputting an address signal indicating addresses of blocks that have been contained in the packets to which the errors have occurred. A video decoding section successively decodes the coded block data units. A first invalid block judgment section conducts an invalid block judgment process only for blocks that are designated by the address signal.
