Abstract: The system and software of the present invention presents a process for translating a source palette containing TV unsafe colors into a resultant modified palette containing only TV safe colors, while preserving the color trends in the source palette. The software will first analyze a source color palette to determine the TV unsafe colors contained therein. For each TV unsafe color in the source color palette, the software determines the closest TV safe color by selecting a TV safe color that is the shortest Euclidean distance from the TV unsafe color. The TV unsafe colors are substituted with the calculated TV safe colors and stored in the resultant palette. The software will divide the color space of the source palette into discrete regions, e.g., by Hue (H), by selecting reference colors as the boundaries of the regions. The initially TV safe color will then be modified in a manner similar to the modifications made on nearby reference colors that were required to make them TV safe.

Abstract: The system for viewing color video "automatically" enables and disables a color killer circuit (monochrome/color mode) so that the color video may be viewed in monochrome. Enabling and disabling the color killer circuit for the current system may be accomplished, in part, by dynamic operation of the television. In operation the user may select one of three methods of activating the monochrome/color mode to enable the color killer circuit. First, the monochrome/color mode may be activated for one or more preselected channels. Second, the monochrome/color mode may be activated for all channels. Third, the monochrome/color mode may be activated if a control signal is included within the television broadcast indicating that the particular video being received is a colorized monochrome video. To deactivate the monochrome/color mode may be accomplished by any of four deactivation methods that disable the color killer circuit. First, the monochrome/color mode may be deactivated by turning the television off and on.

A rectangular-wave signal (Va) is obtained on the basis of the voltage signal (V1) through a peak holding circuit (24) and a sampling/holding circuit (42). A rectangular-wave signal (Vc) is obtained by averaging the rectangular-wave signal (Va) and a rectangular-wave signal (Vb) which is obtained by delaying the signal (Va) by a 1H delay circuit (44) by an adder (46) and a 1/2 multiplication circuit (48). On the basis of the rectangular-wave signal (Vc), a voltage signal (V3) is produced by an LPF (52) having a relatively small time constant, which is compared with a reference voltage (Vref) by a level-comparator (54), whereby a signal is outputted. The signal is used as a color killer signal for a color killer circuit, for example.

Abstract: An automatic color control and chroma killer circuit 3 and video processing system is provided that is capable of controlling an amplitude of a color signal and of performing a killer function with a simple construction without using a divider and/or vertical filter. The ACC/ACK device includes ACC and ACK circuitry which may be selectively enabled with operating signals to a selector 27. When the selector 27 enables amplitude detector 25, the amplitude detector 25 detects amplitude of the input color signal and a coefficient controller 26 compares it with a killer level. If the input color signal fails to meet the killer level then the coefficient controller 26 controls a coefficient generated by the coefficient generator 22 to perform a killer operation. The ACC operation and circuitry is thereby ACK controlled until an input color signal meets or exceeds the killer level.

Abstract: In an image pickup apparatus having a low-pass filter for detecting a luminance component of an image pickup signal and a band-pass filter for detecting a contour component of the image pickup signal, a digital system for performing a digital signal processing action is arranged to have the low-pass filter and the band-pass filter not cascade-connected to each other. The arrangement is such that the signal processing action is performed without bringing about any spurious contour, any deterioration in frequency characteristic, etc., due to place cancelling peculiar to a digital system. The apparatus reduces the possibility of deterioration of images, permits simplification of circuit arrangement, permits reduction in electric energy consumption and in scale of the circuit, and thus facilitates adoption of an integrated circuit arrangement.

  • Patent number: 5353066
Abstract: A method and circuit for preventing the deterioration of picture quality in a video processor is disclosed in which, when an input color video signal is input, a clock signal for a combfilter is locked with a phase-locked loop (PLL) by a burst signal and when a monochrome video signal without the burst signal is input, the clock signal is locked by the output (quasi-burst signal) of a voltage-controlled oscillator of the PLL circuit, before the lapse of one horizontal period, so that the clock signal is constantly locked by a multiple (4 fsc) of the burst signal regardless of the presence or absence of the burst signal of the input video signal. According to a color/mono signal discriminating result, either the burst signal or the quasi-burst signal is selected as a reference signal so that the reference signal is locked to provide a clock signal having a constant phase and frequency, thereby preventing aliasing due to clock variations when the monochrome signal is input and thus improving picture quality.
