Publication number: 20110157483Abstract: A projector for projecting diffracted light in a selectable pattern and/or animation on a display surface. The apparatus includes a light source providing one or more beams of coherent light from one or more lasers. The apparatus includes a diffraction assembly in the path of the light source to generate diffracted light by diffracting the laser light with one, two, or more diffraction grating patterns and, optionally, with a diffraction glass or other material. An active mask is provided with a raster that receives the diffracted light and that includes a plurality of optical shutter elements that are selectively operable to project a portion of the diffracted light from the active mask toward the display surface. In one example, the active mask includes a liquid crystal display panel to provide a grid of addressable programmable pixels that are turned on and off to project portions of the diffracted light.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 28, 2009Publication date: June 30, 2011Applicant: DISNEY ENTERPRISES, INC.Inventors: Mark A. Publication number: 20090185083Abstract: A display device displays a D-seat image and a P-seat image on a display screen in a time-sharing manner, and forms a non-display state by inserting a black image BL or the like when changing the viewing angle of the display screen by controlling a liquid crystal shutter provided on the display screen in synchronization with the switching between the D-seat image and the P-seat image. With this display device, it is possible to prevent the image in one field of view from entering the other field of view, even if there are differences in the switching timing of the liquid crystal shutter.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 21, 2007Publication date: July 23, 2009Applicant: Fujitsu Ten LimitedInventors: Tetsuya Ohtoshi, Minoru Maehata

Patent number: 5459591Abstract: The present invention relates to beam steering and scanning devices which utilize an imaging cell which incorporates a solid-state cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) element, an electronically controlled, variable half-wave retarder and a source of circularly polarized light. The CLC element is disposed at an angle (45.degree.) relative to the path along which light from the source is projected and is designed to reflect, at a given wavelength, one circular polarization of light and transmit the other. Using this characteristic, light of one polarization or the other is presented to the variable retarder and depending on whether or not it is actuated, light is either diverted into another orthogonal path or remains in the original path. If another similar imaging cell is disposed in the orthogonal path, light incident on that cell can also be diverted into yet another path or transmitted along the orthogonal path under control of a half-wave retarders associated with said another imaging cells.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1994Date of Patent: October 17, 1995Inventor: Sadeg M.
