  • Patent number: 6639710
Abstract: An adaptive optics system is disclosed whereby at least one mirror in the system is manipulated using electrostatic force to selectively attract or repel a portion of the mirror to or from a particular electrode, respectively. This attraction or repulsion is accomplished by mechanically coupling a bound charge layer of dielectric material to at least one surface of the mirror and then placing a voltage across an electrode in an array of electrodes positioned near that mirror. The charge in the dielectric material combined with a suitable electric field makes it possible to attract portions of the mirror in one instant and then, by changing the sign on the voltage placed across the electrode, to repel those same portions in the next instant.

  • Patent number: 5777589
Abstract: Methods of reducing artifacts in SLM-based display systems (10, 20), whose images are based on data displayed by bit-weight for pulse-width modulated intensity levels. A first method is suitable for systems (20) that use multiple SLMs (14) to concurrently display images of different colors, which are combined at the image plane. The data for each color are staggered in time (FIG. 4). A second method is suitable for either multiple SLM systems (20) or for systems (10) that use a single SLM (14) and a color wheel (17) to display differently colored images sequentially. The data for each color is arranged in a different data sequence (FIG. 5). In either method, the intensity transitions do not occur at the same time.

  • Patent number: 5675394
Abstract: An equalization apparatus for use in a television system includes a equalizer filter having a plurality of equalizer coefficients and an updating circuit. In the updating circuit, the equalizer coefficients are adjusted by using two computational terms: a CMA term; and a Cauchy term in order to effectively make the equalizer to converge to the global minimum of the coarse MSE function all the time. Both terms decrease to zero as the equalizer coefficients approach to a minimum, but in different ways: the first CMA term decreases to zero monotonously; and the value of the second Cauchy term fluctuates up and down, depending on the selected value for the Cauchy distribution function and thus temporary increases, although contained, are allowed during the process. A combination of the two terms with a proper choice for the weight factors prevents the equalizer coefficients from converging to a local minimum of the coarse MSE function and makes them converge to the global minimum thereof all the time.
