Abstract: A projection system is provided. The projection system comprises a first light source module, a second light source module, a prism module, a projection lens and a digital micromirror device (DMD). The two light source modules provide a first light beam and a second light beam according to the specific timing sequences respectively. The prism module is defined with a first reflection mechanism and a second reflection mechanism. The DMD comprises a plurality of micro mirrors. After traveling into the prism module and being reflected by the first reflection mechanism, the first light beam is emitted onto the micro mirrors. The first light beam is adapted to be reflected onto the projection lens and images onto the screen while the micro mirrors are tilted at a first angle. After traveling into the prism module and being reflected by the second reflection mechanism, the second light beam is emitted onto the micro mirrors.

Abstract: A projection system incorporating a prism with dual total internal reflection function, to increase the performance of DLP™ projection, by offering a solution to combine 2 light paths to contribute to the brightness on the screen and at the same time rejecting flat-state and off-state light from entering the projection lens thereby enhancing contrast. In one implementation those two light paths can be collecting light from 2 different light sources which are driven in a pulsed manner with a duty cycle of approximately 50% for each of the two light sources at increased power. In a second implementation with a colour sequential single DMD™ projector, while one light path passes a primary colour the second light path passes the complementary secondary colour. A special colour transformation algorithm is proposed to transform the image input signals to make optimal use of the capabilities offered by the second implementation, and create maximum brightness and colour saturation of the image.

Abstract: Prism elements having TIR surfaces placed in close proximity to the active area of a SLM device to separate unwanted off-state and/or flat-state light from the projection ON-light bundle. The TIR critical angle of these prisms is selected to affect either the off-state light or additionally, any portion of flat-state light reflected from the SLM. These TIR surfaces are placed to immediately reflect the unwanted light as it comes off the SLM, thereby preventing the contamination of light along the projection path, which tends to degrade the system contrast. To further improve the optical performance of the system, these TIR prisms can be attached directly to the SLM package, completely eliminating the package window. Also, these TIR prism can be coupled to DMDs having asymmetric mirrors, which tilt through a larger angle for the ON-light to provide high etendue and lumen output, but through near-zero degrees for the OFF-light, thereby improving the separation of any unwanted light from the off/flat states.

Abstract: The invention relates to a scanning image projector that facilitates making the whole optical system compact while making it easy to control an image being projected. The scanning image projector comprises a light source unit that gives out a light beam modulated on the basis of image information, a deflector that reflects the light beam for deflecting and scanning it in a two-dimensional direction, and a projecting optical system that projects a light beam reflected by the deflector toward a projection direction to form a two-dimensional image. The projecting optical system 6 comprises a plurality of reflecting surfaces 12, 13 tilted with respect to a chief ray of a light beam leading to the center of the projected image. At least one of the plurality of reflecting surfaces 13, 14 is a curved reflecting surface of concave shape at a position where the chief ray 21 of a light beam leading to the center of the projected image goes by.

Abstract: A projector can form images of illumination system on respective optical paths at positions of corresponding liquid crystal display panels with respect to a light emission surface of a cross dichroic prism without relatively inverting the images and without increasing the number of lenses from the number of lenses included in a relay optical path structure in related art. Moreover, the projector can equalize the magnification of the images formed on the respective liquid crystal display panels by controlling relative image-forming conditions of the first and second optical paths in advance. Thus, deterioration of white balance and color unevenness of light projected by the projector can be reduced even when light emission distribution of a light source varies with elapse of time, for example.
