Dithering (e.g., Spatial Distribution Of Print Elements By Threshold Matrix) Patents (Class 358/3.13)
  • Patent number: 8867100
Abstract: An image may be quantized into a pattern of dots, e.g., for devices capable of printing dots of variable size and variable color intensity. One may use a pre-determined mapping of the continuous-tone intensity value into a discrete vector of intensity values, and each intensity value may then be processed by a set of binary quantizers. The resulting binary vector may then be mapped into a combination of available dot sizes and color intensities. Through a scalar multiplier, the pre-determined mapping of continuous-tone intensity values may be used at multiple print resolutions.

Abstract: Devices and methods for dynamic dithering are provided. For example, an electronic device according to an embodiment may include image processing circuitry that operates on higher-bit-depth image data and a display panel that displays lower-bit-depth image data. To obtain the lower-bit-depth image data, the image processing circuitry may perform dynamic dithering on the higher-bit-depth image data. Such dynamic dithering may involve dithering frames of the higher-bit-depth image data based at least in part on respective rounding threshold values.

  • Patent number: 8848252
Abstract: A control device includes a first dither matrix having threshold values assigned to a plurality of cells. The control device converts image data into binary data by using the first dither matrix. The control device converts an input value into ON-pixel or OFF-pixel based on the threshold value. The threshold values in the first dither matrix are arranged such that the ON-pixels grow from a first group of ON-pixels to a second group of ON-pixels as the input value increases. The first group corresponds to cells arranged in M rows and N columns. The second group corresponds to cells arranged in (M+1) rows and (N+1) columns. The second group consists of the first group and a third group corresponding to (M+N+1) number of cells. At least two of the (M+N+1) number of cells are adjacent to each other and have same threshold values.

  • Patent number: 8848253
Abstract: A threshold matrix generation part determines a turn-on order in a matrix area where a threshold matrix is generated and determines a threshold value of each matrix element. In determining the turn-on order, a temporary evaluation value element is obtained based on a distance between each undetermined matrix element whose position in the turn-on order has not been determined and each determined matrix element. If these matrix elements are located in the same position with respect to a row or column direction, the temporary evaluation value element is corrected such that the undetermined matrix element is less evaluated based on the evaluation value. Then, the position of an undetermined matrix element that is most highly evaluated in the turn-on order is determined. Accordingly, a threshold matrix that suppresses the occurrence of a grid-like dot pattern can be provided.

The image processor generates semi-transparent image data by overlaying a semi-transparent object on the PDL data to be rendered semi-transparent. Abstract: As set forth herein, computer-implemented methods and systems facilitate employing a single stochastic screen defined up to a specified transition level. The dots at the specified level are connected to form a triangle tessellation with an associated spot function. For up to three colorants, a vector screening technique is employed, which involves a first colorant dot being grown from the vertices, second colorant dot grown from the triangle center, and a third colorant dot grown from the side midpoints. Growth in this manner ensures separation of colorants up to a certain density level. In cases where fourth colorant is to be used at a given pixel, the fourth colorant can be added using methods typically used for clustered screens, such as stochastic screening of the lightest colorant, in order to mitigate color shift sensitivity issues.

Abstract: A process for printing substrates includes assigning image dots of printer-ready copy to pixels of a multilevel map and assigning values to the pixels depending on the tonal value of the image dot for assigning n+1 different values, where n>1. Artifacts are prevented in multilevel printing processes by assigning threshold values of any threshold value matrix to the pixels of the multilevel map on which the printing is based with respect to their positions relative to the printing substrate, calculating tonal values of the image dot, fixing the values of the pixels depending on the threshold value and the tonal value of the assigned image dot, and printing the multilevel map on a printing substrate in a multilevel printing process, with different values representing different amounts of ink of a printed pixel. A screen assignment device assigns a value to a pixel of a multilevel map generated by an RIP.

  • Patent number: 8649062
Abstract: An image processor includes a tone converter operable when a pixel of input image data is determined as having a value greater in color saturation than a prescribed saturation value. In this operation, the tone converter changes a threshold for each color in a dither matrix associated with the pixel to make the thresholds different in correspondence to color component values of the pixel. The tone converter generates color component values of the pixel constituting image data to be output, based on comparisons between the respective color component values and the changed thresholds.

  • Patent number: 8643904
Abstract: An image processing device converts original image data to converted image data by performing a scaling process and a color conversion process on the original image data; determines, for each pixel in the converted image data, whether or not at least one set of original pixel data corresponding to the converted pixel includes predetermined data; and produces output image data based on the converted image data. The image processing device selects, for each pixel in the converted image data, a first halftone method when no set of original pixel data corresponding to the converted pixel includes the predetermined data, and a second halftone method when the at least one set of original pixel data corresponding to the converted pixel includes the predetermined data. The image processing device produces output pixel data for each converted pixel in the selected halftone method.

  • Patent number: 8625163
Abstract: A dither matrix selecting device includes a storage unit, a determining unit, and a selecting unit. The storage unit is configured to store a first dither matrix and a second dither matrix different from the first dither matrix. The first dither matrix includes a plurality of sub-matrices. Each sub-matrix of the first dither matrix has a plurality of threshold values such that a single dot grows from a starting pixel as an input value increases. Each sub-matrix has a first region and a second region different from the first region. Each threshold value allocated in the first region is smaller than a prescribed value. An arrangement of each threshold value in the first region is identical for all of the plurality of sub-matrices. The determining unit is configured to determine whether or not toner accommodated in a printing device is a specified toner. The selecting unit is configured to select the first dither matrix when the determining unit determines that the toner is not the specified toner.

  • Patent number: 8576456
Abstract: Systems and methods of ensuring the erasure of transient documents are disclosed. The systems and methods include an imaging device that sends a transient document with a pre-printed image into an erase cycle to attempt to remove the image from the document. After the erase cycle, a scanner scans the transient document and converts the transient document into a digital image. A processor compares bit depths of individual bits of the digital image to a bit depth threshold. Depending on the comparison and a number of completed erase cycles, the transient document enters an additional erase cycle, completes as sufficiently erased, or is rejected as not sufficiently erased.
