Abstract: When a facsimile device detects an audio signal via a CNG signal detection unit while detecting an OFF signal in a CNG signal during a telephone conversation, the facsimile device does not detect the audio signal as an OFF signal if the level of the detected audio signal is greater than a threshold and the frequency of the audio signal is within a predetermined audio frequency range. Accordingly, the facsimile device can reliably prevent a false detection of a noise that has a similar signal component to a CNG signal as a CNG signal. It is possible to prevent the facsimile machine from being automatically shifted to a facsimile receiving mode by the false detection of the noise.

The first page of the document is scanned in by a scanning unit (14) and stored in a image memory (19). Upon storing of the image of the first page of the document in the image memory (19), NCU (17) automatically dials a transmission recipient. Additionally, a monitoring unit (16) allows the user to hear the sounds of the communication signals at the start of transmission. If, during the scanning of a second, third, or later page of a multi-page document, free space in the image memory (19) falls below a given value, then the page at which the memory became full is indicated to the user, thereby indicating the page at which retransmission should begin.

Abstract: A method for facsimile transmission over a packet network includes establishing a facsimile call between first and second facsimile terminals in accordance with a facsimile protocol, using a facsimile gateway to convey communications between the terminals over the packet network. The gateway awaits the arrival of a signal conveyed over the packet network from the first terminal, to be transmitted from the gateway to the second terminal as provided by the protocol, and it transmits a fill page to the second terminal if the signal does not arrive within a time limit determined in accordance with the protocol. Upon receiving the signal, the gateway transmits the signal to the second terminal after transmitting the fill page.

Abstract: A conventional data communication apparatus cannot set different receiving capacity for each type of received image data. To solve this problem, a data communication apparatus according to this invention notifies a partner apparatus of the receiving capacity in the normal reception mode of the apparatus at the start of communication. If high-quality transmission is designated for image data transmitted from the partner apparatus, the data communication apparatus determines whether the image data exceeds its own receiving capacity in the high-quality reception mode. If the image data does not exceed the receiving capacity in the high-quality reception mode, the data communication apparatus performs high-quality reception/recording; otherwise, notifies the partner apparatus of its own receiving capacity in the high-quality reception mode.

Abstract: In an information processing system including workstations and printers interconnected by a network, current collective status information of a set of print jobs of a user is displayed permanently in icon form on the screen of the workstation of the user. The status is presented as one of three possible states: (1) active: there is still at least one print job of the set not ready; (2) passive: all the jobs of the set are ready, or the set is empty; or (3) error: a job of the set has caused an error in the printer. The set can include all the print jobs of a user, or a selection thereof. In response to a double mouse click on an icon, extensive information concerning the print jobs of the set to which the icon relates is displayed. As an alternative to permanent presentation in icon form, presentation can also be in the form of messages on the screen at the user's workstation when the status of the set changes.

Abstract: An image transmission apparatus is provided with a FAX modem, an encoding/decoding section, a digitizer-integrated LCD, encoded image data memory, original image data memory, and additional image data memory. Original image data received by the FAX modem are temporarily stored in the encoded image data memory, and the original image data are decoded by the encoding/decoding section. The thus-decoded original image is stored in the original image data memory. An image of the thus-stored original image data is displayed on the digitizer-integrated LCD. An operator draws an additional image on the digitizer-integrated LCD. Data of the thus-drawn additional image are stored in the additional image data memory. The thus-stored additional image data are encoded by the encoding/decoding section, and the thus-encoded additional image data are temporarily stored in the encoded image data memory. Then, the encoded additional image data are sent by the FAX modem.

  • Patent number: 6785017
Abstract: This invention provides a facsimile apparatus having an E-mail transmission/reception function, which can correctly transmit the contents of a file attached to E-mail even when the file cannot be opened on the other party side. A document file as a file attached to E-mail is transmitted from a transmitting facsimile apparatus and received by a receiving facsimile apparatus. If the attached file cannot be normally opened by viewer software or another application of the facsimile apparatus, the apparatus transmits, as a reply to the received E-mail, an error message containing contents representing that the error has occurred, and a facsimile number to be used by the other party for retransmission to the transmitting facsimile apparatus. When the received E-mail contains an error message, the transmitting facsimile apparatus searches for the attached file to be retransmitted by referring to, e.g., the mail title or mail text.

Abstract: In a communications device, a terminal machine transmits/receives data over a network and makes a request for a response to a data transmission from a receiving-end machine. In the terminal machine, an e-mail message identifying unit determines whether data to be received over the network is response data to the response request, and a main control unit controls so as to preferentially receive data identified as the response data by the e-mail message identifying unit over other data. Thus, if an e-mail message is transmitted with a request for a disposition verification, a reply message to the disposition verification request can be quickly received from the receiving-end machine.

It is possible to prevent the facsimile machine from being automatically shifted to a facsimile receiving made by the false detection of the noise.

If the rotation is required, the reading operation is performed in such a manner that the line density in the secondary scanning direction in the reading operation will become the line density in the principal direction after the rotation so that no degradation in the resolution and processing efficiency occurs.

  • Patent number: 6563597
Abstract: A printing system has a printing apparatus and a host apparatus. Print data or control data is transferred between the printing apparatus and the host apparatus in accordance with at least two transfer methods. Upon detecting that a specific state has passed, the printing apparatus or the host apparatus predicts a change of the transfer method when (or immediately after) the specific state has passed. An analysis is conducted to determine whether the transfer method has been changed for the data subsequently transferred. If it is found that the transfer method used in the printing apparatus or the host apparatus has been changed, the other apparatus accordingly changes the transfer method. On the other hand, if the transferred data is based on the currently used method, the method is not changed, but is maintained.

  • Patent number: 6552826
Abstract: A facsimile network includes a plurality of nodes (10)-(14) which are disposed at different locations in the world. An originating fax machine (16) is associated with one of the nodes (10) for transmitting a fax over a local public telephone network (PSTN) (18). When the node (10) receives the fax transmission in the normal transmission mode, it then converts it to a digitized compressed and encrypted image which is transmitted over a primary network (24), such as the Internet, to a destination node (14) by a predetermined route. The node (14) then decompresses and de-encrypts the image and converts it to a facsimile image for transmission to a destination fax (20) in a normal mode over a local PSTN (22). A node (12) operates as a central node which can also receive the transmission for routing directly to the fax or for directing via another network link to the node (14).
