Variable Thresholding Technique Patents (Class 358/466)
  • Patent number: 7881553
Abstract: An image processing apparatus includes a threshold selecting unit that selects a threshold based on an input gray-scale value of the target pixel. When a degree of flexibility is defined as representing a degree of the number of pixels that can take different output values as a result of threshold processing on the pixels with the same input gray-scale value, the threshold selecting unit selects a threshold from at least two types of thresholds associated with pixel positions and having the same period and different degrees of flexibility.

Abstract: To render the comparison of image patches more efficient, the data of an image patch can be projected into a smaller-dimensioned subspace, resulting in a descriptor of the image patch. The projection into the descriptor subspace is known as a linear discriminant embedding, and can be performed with reference to a linear discriminant embedding matrix. The linear discriminant embedding matrix can be constructed from projection vectors that maximize those elements that are shared by matching image patches or that are used to distinguish non-matching image patches, while also minimizing those elements that are common to non-matching image patches or that distinguish matching image patches. The determination of such projection vectors can be limited such that only orthogonal vectors comprise the linear discriminant embedding matrix. The determination of the linear discriminant embedding matrix can likewise be constrained to avoid overfitting to training data.

Abstract: In ink-jet printing apparatuses having a monochrome head which is longer than a color head, if a monochrome image is processed as a color image, the printing speed cannot be improved. Accordingly, the color attribute is determined by pixel based on a luminance signal indicating a color multivalue image, and the number of color attributes and the number of array attributes in a first line group are counted. Based on these count values, a parameter indicating an image characteristic of second line group including the first line group is calculated. The image attribute of the second line group is determined in correspondence with the respective count values and the parameter. Then, based on the results of determination about adjacent second line groups, the image attribute of third line group included in the second line groups is determined. Thus attribute determination can be appropriately performed in predetermined band units of image data.

Abstract: The ability of the visual system to detect contrast in an image is a function of the frequency of the contrasting pattern and the distortion of the image. • Patent number: 6608929
Abstract: An image segmentation apparatus divides an image into plural regions according to feature quantities of pixels for composing the image, by a programmed computer. A divider divides the image into plural regions by using the separation degree of feature quantities of pixels for composing the image. A separation degree operator determines the separation of feature quantities between interior and exterior region, according to the dissimilarity of feature quantities of pixels for enclosing the boundary of plural regions divided by the divider. A changer changes the alienation degree of feature quantities of pixels enclosing the boundary between the interior and exterior region in a specific condition, by using the alienation degree of feature quantities between interior and exterior region calculated by the alienation degree operator. The divider divides the image into plural regions by using changed separation degree.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for classifying image data. A neighborhood average gray value may be determined for the input image data. A threshold value may then be determined based on the neighborhood average gray value. Pixels are evaluated to determine if a gray level difference between the pixel and the neighborhood average gray level is greater than the threshold.

  • Patent number: 6359702
Abstract: Image data for a margin around the image area of a book form original can be erased and image data for a book center portion are obtained without loss. In a photograph mode, a low threshold value is set in first binary conversion means 4, and image data having been input are binary converted by using this value. Based on the image data having been converted, a first coercion signal generating unit 6 judges a margin around the original image. A high threshold value is set to second binary conversion means 5 and image data having been input are binary converted by using this value. Based on the image data having been converted, a second coercion signal generating unit 7 judges a margin around the original and a portion including a book center portion. A character processing binary conversion unit 3 carries out binary conversion on input image data for the portion within the original, and outputs whitening data which erase the margin around the original.

Abstract: A method for binarizing a gray-level input image including a plurality of pixels having respective gray-level values. A lower threshold and an upper threshold are determined. A first binary value is assigned to the pixels in the gray-level image having gray-level values above the upper threshold, and a second binary value is assigned to the pixels in the gray-level image having gray-level values below the lower threshold. The pixels in an intermediate group having gray-level values between the lower and upper thresholds are processed so as to determine optimal assignments of the pixels in the intermediate group to the first and second binary values.

Abstract: A method and device for an object detectable and background removal and storage media for storing program thereof enable automatic detection of an object to be executed minutely and high precisely for outline. A sectional image statistic calculation measure calculates a mean value and standard deviation of characteristic value of brightness and so forth of the sectional image with input image being subjected to division processing into sectional image. A background sectional image selection measure causes a sectional image whose standard deviation is the smallest value in the sectional images to be taken as the sectional image with high probability of including only the background. A background statistic estimation measure investigates the sectional image including only the background and another sectional image under the relationship between the mean value and the standard deviation.

Abstract: Block representative values are set adaptively based on the feature amount concerning the distribution state of a prepared histogram of input image data. Thus, if block truncation coding is executed based on an input image having mixed CG image and scanned image areas, efficient coding can be performed and a high-quality decomposed image can be provided. Further, when the histogram is divided into image data groups, the image data groups can be again divided to provide a high-quality decomposed image, thus efficient coding can be performed and a high-quality decomposed image can be provided more reliably.

Abstract: There is provided an image processing apparatus, operating as described below, employing an error distribution method to perform a halftone process intensively providing dots to achieve high resolution and a high level of tone representation simultaneously. The image processing apparatus, employing the error distribution method to convert an image represented by multiple values into an image provided in binary representation, employs a distribution weighting coefficient to distribute an error caused at a target pixel to a neighboring pixel. The distribution weighting coefficient simply decreases and ultimately attains zero as the distance from the target pixel increases, and the distance extending to attain zero is also set to vary with direction. Such a distribution weighting coefficient allows a halftone process providing dots intensively.
