Abstract: An observation optical device comprises first and second focusing mechanisms, an association mechanism, and a reticle. The first focusing mechanism focuses an observation optical system. The second focusing mechanism focuses a photographing optical system. • Patent number: 6606192
Abstract: An astronomical viewing instrument with a helmet-mounted optical assembly comprising a pair of binocular tubes, each with an objective lens, attached to a base plate. The base plate is connected via a first hinge to the helmet worn by the viewer. The binocular tubes are also attached to a first pair of apertures in a mirror housing which has a second pair of apertures with threaded tees, at an angle relative to the first pair, for connection to a pair of prism housings ending in eyepieces for the viewer. The prism housings provide for a parallel offset such that their individual rotation around the mirror housing tees changes the distance between the eyepieces to match the distance between the pupils of the viewer. The first hinge serves to accommodate different head sizes of viewers and allows to adjust the weight, via the cushioned eye-pieces, on the eyes of a viewer.

The vision system comprises an imaging device coupled with a viewing device. The imaging device comprises a compression lens and an image sensor. The viewing device comprises an image display and a decompression lens. The compression lens matches the optical distortion to the human visual acuity curve for field positions greater than an angle .theta.. Below angle .theta. there is substantially no distortion. The optimum angle .theta. depends on the application. For an average individual viewing a landscape the angle .theta. is about 10.degree.. For different viewing objects, the optimum angle .theta. varies from about 5.degree. to about 15.degree.. The image sensor can be infrared sensitive for infrared viewing.

The invention solves thereby the problem of how in a technically and economically satisfactory way it is able to freely change between binocular and monocular vision. As an addition and optionally, the invention permits the distance between the two eyepieces to become adjustable and that a teleconverter can be applied in front of the light amplifier input and possibly also in above described free through-view opening so that magnification can be switched both with and without light amplification.

Abstract: A stereoscopic viewer includes left and right lenses and sight blocks, all housed in the lightweight frame. A stereoscopic display, such as a computer monitor or a TV, includes left and right stereoscopic central images that are displayed side-by-side on the central portion of the display screen. The left and right central images have center spacings equivalent to normal interpupillary distances. However, the left central image is extended to the left to form a left peripheral zone and the right central image is extended to the right to form a right peripheral zone. A user employing the viewer integrates the central stereoscopic views with the left and right peripheral zones to form an apparent 3-dimensional image. Additional two-dimensional zones may be established outside of the stereoscopic central images for items such as menus, windows, tool icons, etc.

  • Patent number: 5552932
Abstract: A collapsible binocular comprising a substantially rectangular-faced open-sided housing having a front wall formed with a pair of objective lens apertures and a rear wall formed with a pair of eyepiece lens apertures is provided. A top wall, a bottom wall with an intermediate transverse fold line, the front wall and the rear wall of the housing are integrally connected and a flap is integrally connected to the front wall for attaching the front wall to under side of a visor extending from the top wall. A left side wall member and a right side wall member are integrally attached to the front wall or to the rear wall such that the front wall or the rear wall, respectively, play the role of a centered portion. When the binocular is assembled, any pairs of objective lens apertures will be in alignment with any pairs of eyepiece lens apertures.

  • Patent number: 5528426
Abstract: A laser block beam splitter system for microscopes comprising a main body housing, a laser safety filter, two optical trains, a pair of beam splitters, and three viewing stations. The beam splitters provide an image along both an axial beam path and a transverse beam path relative to the main body housing. The laser safety filter is disposed at the distal portion of both optical trains before the pair of beam splitters to protect the viewing stations from laser radiation. The three viewing stations of the laser block beam splitter system are thereby continually protected from laser radiation by the laser safety filter.

  • Patent number: 5371626
Abstract: Binoculars designed to provide a large aided static field of view are provided. The binoculars are characterized by S/D ratios of above 2.8, where S is the binoculars' aided static field of view calculated by multiplying the binoculars' magnifying power by the binoculars' semi field of view in object space and D is given by tan.sup.-1 [(R.sub.ex +1.5)/13], where R.sub.ex is the radius of the binoculars' exit pupil and where R.sub.ex and the constants 1.5 and 13 are measured in millimeters. As a result of the increased S/D ratio, the binoculars of the invention minimize the sensation of tunnel vision which normally occurs when binoculars are used and reduce the user's apprehension of missing activities in his or her peripheral vision. In certain embodiments, a movable field lens unit is employed to provide variable power and a negative corrector lens unit is employed for aberration correction and to minimize the size of the binoculars. The binoculars are suitable for mass production and general consumer use.

Abstract: A helmet mounted night vision device for a pilot that is automatically propelled away from the pilot before the pilot ejects from an aircraft, thereby preventing injury to the pilot caused by the night vision device striking the ejecting pilot. In a preferred embodiment, the present invention night vision device is a binocular device, having a right optical assembly and a left optical assembly that are viewed by the right and left eyes of the pilot, respectively. The right and left optical assemblies are each attached to elongated arm members. Each of the arm members, supporting the optical assemblies, are pivotably coupled to a common mounting plate that is removably attachable to the helmet of the pilot. Prior to ejection, the left and right optical assemblies are joined in front of the eyes of the pilot, thereby forming the binocular device.
