    Abstract: In a tape drive system performing read/write operations on a tape by inserting a tape cartridge into a tape drive, the tape cartridge having a tape on which servo and data tracks are arranged longitudinally and a predetermined servo pattern is recorded on each of the servo tracks, a method and system for re-setting coefficients of a low-pass filter for servo control of the tape drive, each time the tape cartridge is inserted into the tape drive so that a servo system of the tape drive is stabilized. More specifically, the servo pattern is read from the tape in the cartridge inserted into the tape drive, frequency analysis for the read servo pattern is performed, a singularity that exceeds a predetermined spectrum range is detected from frequency components obtained by the frequency analysis, and the coefficients of the low-pass filter are set so as to cancel a power spectrum of the singularity.

    Abstract: A digital signal recording method and apparatus for recording a digital signal on a recording medium by dividing the digital signal at intervals of a certain byte number, adding to each of the divided signals a synchronizing signal, a control signal including block address information, and an error detection and correction code to form signal blocks, and precoding each of the signal blocks in order to detect a partial response. Before the precode processing, the digital signal and the error detection and correction code are scrambled on the basis of the control signal, and the control signal is inverted.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for signal threshold adjustment that compensates for signal asymmetry which utilizes an algorithm to detect each side of an asymmetric signal independently to ensure that the proper signal detection point is used on both the high and low side of the asymmetric signal. In particular, the high side threshold is adjusted downwards a predetermined amount until detected, the high side threshold voltage is then recorded and reset to the maximum value. Correspondingly, the low side threshold is then adjusted upwards the predetermined amount until detected, the low side threshold voltage is then recorded and reset to the minimum value. The algorithm may be repeated to continuously monitor a signal. The gain of the read amplifier can then be accordingly adjusted by the controller such that it approximately equals the peak of the amplified reference burst to the predetermined value.

For example, if the track width is twice the head width, then the tape is transported at twice the standard speed.

In one mode, calibration is achieved for a first helical scan recorder which does not have a capstan, by installing a drum of the recorder in a second helical scan recorder, using the second recorder to record servo signals on two tracks, reading the servo signals from those two tracks, second recorder, using the servo signals to determine axial offset variance, and storing a value indicative of axial offset variance in a memory of the first recorder. The axial offset variance is used in a write splice operation and, in one mode, to determine linear velocity of the media.

Thus, the desired static image can be retrieved by first searching the PP ID signal quickly to locate the static image recording portion and then searching the INDEX ID signal in the static image recording portion. These two ID signals can also be subsequently implanted in the dynamic image recording portion to retrieve any one frame image.
