  • Patent number: 11557316
Abstract: The present disclosure describes aspects of pulse-based writing for magnetic storage media. In some aspects, a pulse-based writer of magnetic storage media determines that a string of data bits having a same polarity corresponds to a magnet longer than a threshold associated with a magnetic media writer. The pulse-based writer inserts, into the string of data bits, a transition to a polarity opposite to the same polarity of the string of data bits. The string of data bits including the inserted transition is then transmitted to the magnetic media writer to cause a write head of the writer to pulse while writing the magnet to magnetic storage media. Various aspects may also implement a control signal to mask a transition or control polarity of the magnetic media writer. By so doing, magnets may be written to the magnetic storage media more efficiently or with less distortion to neighboring tracks.

  • Patent number: 11259118
Abstract: A Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter is configured to minimize delay and maximize passband power by adjusting the filter coefficients applied to the sampled values. The FIR filter obtains an input signal and samples the input signal to generate a set of sampled input values. The FIR filter generates a set of filter coefficients, with each filter coefficient based on a corresponding sampled input value in the set of sample input values. The FIR filter selects a subset of sampled input values that have been most recently sampled from the input signal, and selects a subset of filter coefficients corresponding to sampled input values that are not the most recently sampled. The subset of sampled input values is combined with the subset of filter coefficients to generate an output value for the FIR filter.

  • Patent number: 11145331
Abstract: Systems and methods for adaptation of a two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) channel are provided. Read-back signals from respective read sensors of a TDMR channel are received at an equalizer, the read-back signals corresponding to a digital signal value. A log-likelihood ratio (LLR) signal is generated based at least in part on the read-back signals. A cross-entropy value is generated indicative of a mismatch between a probability of detected bit and a probability of the true recorded bit. The equalizer is adapted by setting an equalizer parameter to a value that corresponds to a minimum cross-entropy value from among the computed cross-entropy value and one or more previously computed cross-entropy values, to decrease a read-back bit error rate for the TDMR channel.

  • Patent number: 10910012
Abstract: According to one embodiment, a first decoding circuit calculates likelihood information by executing Viterbi decoding using a parameter for normalizing a branch metric on a signal sequence read from a magnetic disk. The second decoding circuit generates a first bit data sequence by iterative decoding using the likelihood information, and executes a check using a parity check matrix on the first bit data sequence. The control circuit causes the first decoding circuit and the second decoding circuit to repeatedly execute decoding, and updates the parameter in accordance with a check result obtained every time the decoding by the first decoding circuit and the second decoding circuit is executed. An acquisition circuit acquires numerical information corresponding to the number of bit errors included in the first bit data sequence obtained when the number of times of executions of the decoding is equal to a first value.

Abstract: Embodiments described herein provide methods and systems for correcting a transient phase error induced while recording on a magnetic recording medium. An input signal is received and is distributed to a plurality of sinc filters. A respective phase-shifted signal is generated at each of the plurality of sinc filters by adding a corresponding predetermined amount of phase to the received signals. A respective score is assigned to each of the generated phase-shifted signals. Abstract: There is provided an error correction method for a non-volatile memory. The method includes receiving a codeword read from the non-volatile memory, computing a reliability information for each bit of the codeword received, and performing a reduced-complexity soft-decision decoding (SDD) technique to decode the received codeword. In particular, the SDD technique includes forming a set of test patterns based on the reliability data, and determining whether to perform a HDD of a test pattern in the set of test patterns based on a distance between the test pattern and a candidate pattern. There is also provided an error correction module for a non-volatile memory and a memory system incorporating the error correction module.

Abstract: A magnetic sensor includes: a pulse generation circuit that generates a pulse having a pulse width shorter than the power-on time of an intermittent power supply signal from an external intermittent power supply; a magneto-electric conversion element; and a switch that controls, based on the pulse, a signal application time of the intermittent power supply signal to the magneto-electric conversion element within the power-on time. The magneto-electric conversion element is, for example, an MR element that outputs two detection signals, magnitude relation between signal levels of the two detection signals changing by field intensity of an external magnetic field. The magnetic sensor may further include an amplifier that amplifies the two detection signals and a comparator that compares the two amplified detection signals.

  • Patent number: 9146683
Abstract: A mapping table is modified to match one or more specified storage conditions of data stored in or expected to be stored in one or more logical block address ranges to physical addresses within a storage drive having performance characteristics that satisfy the specified storage conditions. For example, the performance characteristics may be a reliability of the physical location within the storage drive or a data throughput range of read/write operations. Existing data is moved and/or new data is written to physical addresses on the storage media possessing the performance characteristic(s), according to the mapping table. Further, a standard seeding or a seeding override for the re-mapped logical block addresses can prevent read operations from inadvertently reading incorrect physical addresses corresponding to the re-mapped logical block addresses.

  • Patent number: 9118511
Abstract: A distributed Analog Finite Impulse Response (AFIR) filter circuit with n physical taps provides an output equivalent to an AFIR filter circuit with 2n?1 taps by emulating n?1 taps. An impedance mismatch, with respect to the characteristic impedance of the input and output transmission lines, is imposed at the input and output terminals to take advantage of the resulting reflective signal paths, which emulate the additional taps. This implementation results in space-savings and power-savings for on-chip implementations of the circuit. Implementations disclosed herein are advantageous in telecommunication applications that rely heavily on copper/FR4 backplanes in serial data links.
