Automatic Control Of A Recorder Mechanism Patents (Class 360/69)
  • Patent number: 7283319
Abstract: A method, computer program product and hard disk drive for restricting a rate of spin-up/spin-down cycles for a spindle motor in a hard disk drive. The firmware in the hard disk drive determines a maximum rate of spin-up/spin-down cycles the spindle motor is designed to handle over a designated period of time based on the number of spin-up/spin-down cycles the spindle motor is designed to handle over its expected lifetime. The firmware disables the automatic standby mode of operation if a calculated rate of spin-up/spin-down cycles during the designated period of time is greater than the maximum rate of spin-up/spin-down cycles the spindle motor is designed to handle over the designated period of time. By disabling the automatic standby mode of operation, the rate of spin-up/spin-down cycles will be reduced as the spindle motor will not incur a spin-up/spin-down cycle until the automatic standby mode of operation is enabled.

Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed for connecting to a host, the host comprising loopback circuitry operable to loop a pattern received from the disk drive back to the disk drive. The disk drive comprises interface circuitry including a transmitter driver operable to transmit transmission signals at a transmission amplitude, and a receiver driver operable to receive reception signals. The transmitter driver is configured to transmit at an initial transmission amplitude, and a calibration pattern is transmitted to the host through the transmitter driver. The reception signals received by the receiver driver are monitored to detect a loopback pattern representing a loopback of the calibration pattern. The loopback pattern is processed to detect an error, and the transmission amplitude is adjusted in response to the error.

Abstract: A method and apparatus which can provide a temperature estimate in a hard disk drive or other electronic device is provided. Output from the sensor, which may be indicative of a location spaced from the target temperature location, is sampled and integrated over an interval of time to form an estimate of average input sensor voltage. During the time interval, history of the HDD pre-amplifier operating modes is accumulated. The results are combined to form an estimate of HDA ambient temperature. Sensor offsets associated with each power mode, and weighted to the corresponding mode duty, can be subtracted from the average input sensor voltage.

Abstract: A system for precisely determining a position with resolution on the order of nanometers or sub-nanometers is described. In particular, a system is described that utilizes a first and a second sensor assembly to determine a position of a movable element over a distance many times the capable range of operation of either of the individual sensor assemblies. The two sensor assemblies leap-frog one another in an incremental fashion to ensure that at least one of the sensor assemblies is always within it operational range. Positional signals generated by one of the sensor assemblies can be used to calibrate the other sensor assembly, following an adjustment of the other sensor assembly. The described invention may be implemented in an optical storage disk mastering system to determine the position of mastering optics as the mastering optics translate over the surface of a storage master disk.

The cartridge is compatible with an existing cartridge docking station with a modification to the control logic of the docking station's control module. Specifically, the control logic is altered to recognize that sensing magnets with both sensors requires the docking station to allow data to be written to, but not erased or altered on the cartridge. Abstract: A method for driving a motor by imposing the current in the motor by means of power current mirrors is presented. This allows driving the motor in current with higher accuracy and lower electrical noise. The Hard Disk Drive application is an example where higher resolution is required for the VCM motor. Furthermore this method reduces the complexity of the system eliminating components and high performance circuits. Moreover this approach reduces the development and manufacturing cost by simplifying the testability and the analysis of the system. The intrinsic elimination of DC offset also takes out the need for the system offset calibration phase and significantly improves on the harmonic distortion of the transfer function. Furthermore this method offers the advantage of faster overall response of the system and higher efficiency.

  • Patent number: 7212370
Abstract: A method is presented for reducing time loss during manufacture and testing of a hard disk drive by predicting reduction in gas fill. The method includes using servo tracking error to obtain a measured value of insitu non-repeatable runout (NRRO) for the hard disk drive, the hard disk drive having been filled with the gas and semi-sealed. The measured value of NRRO is then deconvolved into a plurality of values for flow induced NRRO components. These values of NRRO and of flow induced NRRO components are compared to predetermined limiting values and a time when one of the predetermined limiting values will be reached is predicted. Action is then applied as appropriate.

Abstract: The thermal decay of data written to a magnetic mass storage medium is determined by measuring and analyzing the time-domain equalized-signal-to-noise ratio (ESNR) and equalized signal-to-total-distortion noise ratio (ESTDR) of written data. In some embodiments, a test track and a reference track are initialized from data. Subsequently, the reference track is re-initialized from the test data, and the time-domain ESNR and/or ESTDR measurements are made of the test track and the reference track, at predetermined time intervals. Later, the time-domain ESNR and ESTDR measurements are analyzed to determine the thermal decay of the data written. In another embodiment of the present invention, the ESNR and/or ESTDR measurements includes reading the data through a non-return-to-zero bus in phases, in which the phases are selected in sequence.

Abstract: A system using a tape cassette (1) with a memory (4) as a recording medium is provided. In the memory (4) provided in the tape cassette (1) used in the system, there is formed a storage area where instruction/object information in which an instruction to be executed by a required device is stated in addition to a storage area where management information for managing recording to or playback from the tape cassette (1) is stated. At an information processor (10, 40 or 50), instruction/object information is acquired from the memory (4) and processed to provide a control corresponding to the content of the instruction/object information. A device to make some action on the tape cassette (1) can thus have a higher operability and extensibility.

  • Patent number: 7206873
Abstract: The present invention describes a method and system for adjusting the rate of data transfer between a high-speed multi-channel tape drive and a slower-capability network interface. The present invention allows for selectively enabling/disabling active channels to adjust the data throughput to match the data transfer capabilities of the network interface. Such an adjustment optimizes the rate of data transfer between the system and the tape drive by reducing the amount of stop and start operations normally present in an environment where the network interface cannot support the high-speed data transfer rates of a tape drive. Such an enablement/disablement adjustment system allows for a greater range of varying data rates within the transfer.

In the unloaded position, a gap between the first pair of guides and the second pair of guides provides a path for loading a tape from a supply reel to a take-up reel without contacting any of the first pair of guides, the second pair of guides and the head assembly to prevent contamination and damage of these components. The tape loader path is isolated from the head by the first pair of guides providing protection of the head from possible contact damage by the loader mechanism and tape leader.

  • Patent number: 7193805
Abstract: A slider (2?) with a reduced fly height is disclosed. The slider includes a small micropad (66) on the lower surface (22?) of the slider (2?). A sensor region (62) of a head (61) that is carried by the slider (2?) protrudes into the micropad (66). The fluid pressure acting on an air bearing surface system (26) on the lower surface (22?) of the slider (2?) is insufficient to dispose the entire lower surface (22?) of the slider (2?) in spaced relation to its corresponding disk (136) during the initial portion of the very first operation of the disk drive. The micropad (66) is thereby burnished, and continues to burnish until the air bearing surface system (26) assumes a position relative to the disk (136) that allows the fluid pressure acting on the air bearing surface system (26) to dispose the entire lower surface (22?) of the slider (2?) in spaced relation to the disk (136).
