Axially Fixed Flexible Disks Patents (Class 360/98.02)
  • Patent number: 11935563
Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to a tape drive. The tape drive comprises a first tape head and a second tape head linearly aligned with one another, where the first tape head and the second tape head are configured to concurrently operate. The first tape head and the second tape head each comprise a plurality of write transducers, a plurality of read transducers, and a plurality of servo transducers. The tape drive further comprises a first actuator coupled to the first tape head and a second actuator coupled to the second tape head. The first and second actuators are configured to independently tilt and move the first and second tape heads, respectively. Tilting and moving the first and second tape heads individually enables the tape drive to compensate for non-linear tape dimensional stability effects.

  • Patent number: 11682426
Abstract: An archival data storage system library includes magnetic-recording disk media, a storage enclosure in which the media are housed, data storage devices (DSDs) configured to write to and read from the media, an automated disk handling mechanism configured to transfer at least some of the media between the storage enclosure and the DSD, and a hermetic enclosure containing the foregoing components. The storage system may further include a gas circulation system for filtering contaminants from the hermetic enclosure. Such a storage system may be implemented as a rack-mountable unit, or as an entire cleanroom facility, as well as in intermediate form factors between those. In the context of a cleanroom storage system, the system may further include an automated disk handling shuttle to receive the media from the disk handling mechanism and an automated disk loading mechanism for accessing the media from the shuttle for installing into the DSD.

  • Patent number: 11651784
Abstract: A data storage device includes a base, a shaft that extends perpendicular from the base, and a head stack assembly (HSA) having a first end to which a head is coupled and a second end that is movably mounted on the shaft. The data storage device also includes either a first actuator assembly or a second actuator assembly. The first actuator assembly includes a first coil-permanent magnet assembly that rotatably moves the HSA about the shaft, and a second coil-permanent magnet assembly that serves as a first elevator to linearly move the HSA along the shaft. The second actuator assembly includes a third coil-permanent magnet assembly that rotatably moves the HSA about the shaft, and a second elevator that linearly moves the HSA along the shaft and also moves a data storage device ramp in unison with the HSA.

  • Patent number: 11031037
Abstract: An approach to a reduced-head hard disk drive (HDD) involves an elevator platform assembly for moving an actuator assembly, one or more bearing assemblies, and a load/unload ramp along one or more support posts to provide a head slider access to at least two different recording disk media of a disk stack. The HDD may include a piezoelectric actuator locking mechanism integral to one of the bearing assemblies, such that actuation of the actuator either locks or unlocks the locking mechanism relative to a corresponding support post. When unlocked, the elevator platform assembly can be translated along the length of the disk stack via a motor.

  • Patent number: 8199425
Abstract: A method to at least temporarily replace air with an alternative gas in a first disk drive having a breather filter port is disclosed. A first disk drive is placed in a chamber, which is then evacuated to establish a sub-ambient chamber air pressure. Air bleeds out of the first disk drive through its breather filter port during a first period, until an internal pressure within the first disk drive reaches a reduced internal air pressure that is less than one third the first disk drive's initial internal air pressure. The chamber is then filled with the alternative gas. The alternative gas bleeds into the first disk drive through the breather filter port during a second period, until the internal pressure within the first disk drive reaches a restored internal gas pressure that is in the range 0.5 to 1.25 times the initial internal air pressure.

  • Patent number: 7646563
Abstract: A recording disk cartridge includes a plurality of flexible recording disk media, a rotational member, and a cartridge case. The rotational member holds the recording disk media so that the recording disk media simultaneously rotate. The cartridge case provides a rotationally free housing for the recording disk media and the rotational member. The cartridge case has an opening to allow an end portion of the rotational member to be exposed to an outside of the cartridge case. The recording disk cartridge has an elastic member which provides a force to thrust the rotational member toward the opening.

  • Patent number: 7457081
Abstract: Disclosed is a recording disk cartridge which improves its assembly and production capacities, as well as the flexibility of the design. The recording disk cartridge that has a cartridge case including flexible recording disk media in an integrally rotatable fashion, a lower plate forming a lower wall of the cartridge case, the lower wall being placed parallel to the recording disk media, one or more inner plates being fixed on the lower plate with being stacked and partitioning the recording disk media, and an upper plate being fixed on the inner plates and forming an upper wall of the cartridge case. Furthermore, the lower plate incorporates at least one of a shutter lock mechanism and a write protect switch mechanism. The shutter lock mechanism blocks a shutter from being opened, and the write protect switch mechanism prevents data from being erased accidentally from the recording disk media.

  • Patent number: 6678113
Abstract: A device for monitoring lubricant within a disk drive includes a reservoir packet impregnated with lubricant. The reservoir packet is disposed between a first metal screen and a second metal screen such that a lubricant reservoir transducer is created. The capacitance of the lubricant reservoir packet is monitored and when it falls below a predetermined percentage of the initial capacitance, a user is warned to back up the files contained in the disk drive before failure due to lack of lubricant occurs.
