Patent number: 6445570Abstract: An automatically operating interlock device prevents connection of an electrical device within a cabinet unless the cabinet door is closed. The interlock is particularly useful for circuit breakers contained within arc resistant cabinets. The interlock includes a spring-biased brake bar controlling the position of a brake. The brake bar is biased so that it pulls the brake against one of the wheels of the circuit breaker, thereby preventing movement of the circuit breaker towards its rear, connected position. The breaker is a kind in which a linear displaceable contact device, including a plurality of units, coacts with a stationary countercontact device which includes a corresponding number of countercontact units. The breaker is intended for high voltage lines. All countercontact units are supported by a stand common to the units. The stand also supports the linear displaceable contact device. This arrangement ensures correct alignment of all pairs of contact and countercontact units.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1999Date of Patent: January 9, 2001Assignee: ABB ABInventors: Leif Sköld, Torbjörn Linder, Jan Carlsson, Carl-Ejnar Sölver

Patent number: 6025983Abstract: A switchgear comprising an electrically insulating frame having an operating mechanism accommodated at its front portion and having a main circuit accommodated at its rear portion. The insulating frame defines a space surrounded at three sides by opposing side insulating walls and a rear insulating wall arranged substantially in a U-shaped cross section. The insulating frame also supports a switch portion within the space and supports a terminal conductor leads from the switch portion extending through the rear insulating wall to project toward the rear of the switchgear. The switchgear also comprises an electrically insulating cover covering at a front side of the insulating frame at least the rear end, the top end and the opposing side ends of the operating mechanism. Also, the switchgear may comprises a face plate disposed to a front portion of the switchgear and an operating mechanism disposed between the face plate and the insulating frame.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1998Date of Patent: February 15, 2000Assignee: Mitsubishi Denki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Yoshinori Uchida, Coichi Shichida, Yoshihiro Ookawa

Transportable remotely actuated racking device for use with high voltage industrial circuit breakers
Patent number: 5453587Abstract: A transportable, remotely actuated racking device is provided for use in connection the insertion and removal of very high voltage industrial circuit breakers. The device includes a motor activated rod assembly which is moved between first and second positions for grasping of the circuit breaker during insertion and removal from the circuit breaker housing. The racking device is remotely operated from a point of safety relative to the circuit breaker whereby direct exposure to possible fire and explosions which might occur during racking is greatly reduced.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1993Date of Patent: September 26, 1995Assignee: Gulf States Utilities CompanyInventors: James E. Patent number: 5450280Abstract: A device grounding system is shown which ensures that upon disconnect, an operator will be able to visually determine that a ground has been applied to the disconnected device. The grounding system is designed to mechanically drive a linkage which is controlled by the position of pullout chassis such that when the power bus is connected to the device, the ground is removed in a fail safe manner. As the chassis is opened, a gap distance is achieved between the device and the power source after which a ground rod is driven against input contacts on the disconnected device. The ground rod remains against the contacts through the full movement of the withdrawn chassis to ensure against inadvertent contacts with live devices.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 1994Date of Patent: September 12, 1995Assignee: Powell Electrical Manufacturing CompanyInventor: Michael W. Patent number: 5278722Abstract: A racking mechanism (30) for switchgear cubicle (20) draw-out units (24) including a base (39); and a drive screw assembly (44) attached to the base (39) including a screw block (36) translated by rotation of the screw. The screw block (36) is adapted for selective coupling to a draw-out unit (24). Drive surfaces (72) are constructed on the drive screw assembly (44). A biased racking shield (52) which surrounds at least a portion of the drive surfaces (72) in a first position is translatable to a second position by exerting counter-biasing force against the racking shield, in order to expose a portion of the drive surfaces (72). A crank assembly (76) having a socket portion (80) is engageable with the drive surfaces (72) when the racking shield (52) is translated to its second position, in order to rotate the drive screw (44).Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1993Date of Patent: January 11, 1994Assignee: Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc.Inventor: Michael L.
