The suspension system secures the hard drive in a slot in the structure within the polymer springs, isolating the hard drive from the side panels and dampening the vibration internal and external. The side walls also act as low mass, highly efficient structural members within the system. The minimal structure allows for significant air flow to provide the cooling that is critical to HDD reliability. Beams are designed to consider temperature effects, creep and long term fatigue of the plastics. Multiple beams will be recruited to support the drives and each other to ensure that no individual beam sustains a substantial portion of the load.

Abstract: A mounting assembly includes two side rails that mechanically couple to at least two sides on an exterior of a device, where a given side rail includes one or more circumferential edges that define one or more holes on a surface and into an interior of the given side rail, and the surface is approximately parallel to one of the at least two sides on the exterior of the device. Moreover, the mounting assembly includes mechanical collars that mechanically couple to mechanical couplers that mechanically couple the mounting assembly to a chassis in a computer system, where a given mechanical collar is included in a given hole in the given side rail. Additionally, the mounting assembly includes energy-absorbing material encapsulating the mechanical collars, where the energy-absorbing material is positioned between an outer surface of the given mechanical collar and an inner surface of the given hole.

  • Patent number: 7593221
Abstract: An anti-vibration and anti-EMI frame includes an electrically conductive casing having a plurality of side panels, a front opening and a rear opening for receiving a hard disk drive therein before being fixed in an electronic device. The casing is integrally formed on the side panels with a plurality of outward protruded elastic members, and at the rear opening with a stop plate and two mounting plates. The stop plate prevents the hard disk drive from moving out of the casing via the rear opening thereof; the casing is fixed in the electronic device by threading screws through the mounting plates into the electronic device; and the elastic members on the casing are internally in contact with the electronic device. Therefore, the casing protects the hard disk drive against vibration and shields electromagnetic interference to and from the hard disk drive.

Abstract: A disk device includes a disk unit housing a disk-shaped storage medium, a case holding the disk unit, a bracket holding the case, and a guide member guiding sliding movement of the case in and out from the bracket. The disk device also includes spring members on one of the bracket and the case, distributed in the direction of the relative movement. Each of the spring members extends longitudinally in the direction of the movement. Distal ends of the spring members face and press against the other of the bracket and the case. Base portions of the spring members are integral with the one of the bracket and the case. The spring members inhibit lateral vibration of the case by pressing against small projections on the case. Other spring members inhibit vertical vibration of the case by pressing against sliding support rails of the case. A face plate of the case absorbs vibration in the longitudinal direction.
