Abstract: A manually powered hand held electrical device such as a flashlight is provided. The device has an elongate housing, a power-requiring functional element, a hinge element at the back of the housing, and a crank arm having an end rotatably attached to the hinge. The hinge allows the crank arm to rotate within an arc of 270 degrees between a resting position and an operating position. The arc is within a plane that includes the longitudinal axis of the housing. In the resting position, the crank arm is parallel to the housing; in the operating position, it is orthogonal thereto. The hinge is rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the housing, and consequently so too is crank arm. The hinge is connectable to a generator; rotation of the hinge element powers the generator, and the generator provides power to the power-requiring functional element such as a light-emitting element.

Abstract: A multi-function flashlight device in one preferred embodiment comprising a housing assembly having a tubular member for gripping the device in a user's hand, a control housing coupled to the tubular member, and a lamp housing coupled to the control housing and having a light source mounted therein. The light source has an optical axis that is substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the tubular member. Batteries are housed in the tubular member. A control panel having a keypad overlay is mounted in the control housing. The keypad overlay includes a plurality of control buttons. A driver board in the control housing receives signals from the control panel and control the operation of the light source. The plurality of control buttons are manipulable by a single digit of the user's hand while gripping the tubular member.

Abstract: Work light has LEDs that may require heatsink. Desired radiation pattern achieved by using optical components designed to produce beam or LEDs may have beams in different directions. Radiation pattern of LEDs may be changed by refractive-reflective optics or by convex lenses. Convex lenses may be hemispheres, other planoconvex shapes, concavo-convex shapes, or other shapes. Curved surfaces on any lenses may be spherical or aspheric. Ballast to operate the LEDs from line voltage AC or low voltage DC. Work light may contain batteries. The work light may be mounted on a stand. May have accessory mount. May have charging station. May have a paging transmitter to activate a paging receiver in work light. May have openings for heat transfer from heatsink to ambient air external to light.

  • Patent number: 8042967
Abstract: The present invention relates to a lamp module (10) comprising at least one light emitting diode (LED) chip (12) for emitting light, means (13, 15, 16, 17) for extracting and shaping the light emitted from the chip(s), and a base (21) for allowing the lamp module to be fitted and connected to a lighting device. The lamp module is characterized by at least one electrically switchable cell (22) adapted to receive light emitted from the LED chip(s), which cell in a first state transmits incoming light without substantially altering the direction of the light and in a second state alters the direction of the light when the light passes the cell(s). This allows for electrically controlled adjustable beam shaping. The present invention also relates to a lighting device (30) comprising such a lamp module.

  • Patent number: 8033682
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for providing a light emitting diode and driving circuitry integrated into a component module that will retrofit common incandescent lightbulb applications. The disclosed embodiments will perform with high efficiency at a wide operating voltage range with a very small size allowing for the incorporation within the envelope and form of existing lightbulb bases. Therefore, a single universal LED light bulb module can be used to replace the dozens of conventional LED and incandescent lights currently being used. The electronic circuitries used to drive the LEDs are extremely compact and consequently can be incorporated in nearly any standard bulb base.

Abstract: Flashlight bezels, which comprise a bezel, lens, and a thermal conductor disposed in and through the lens so as to be positioned conduct heat from a light source positioned to one side of the lens to space on the opposite side of the lens, are described. When included in a flashlight, the thermal conductor portion of the bezel becomes associated with the light source so that heat generated by the light source, when energized, can be efficiently transferred to the environment, for example, water, in which the flashlight is being used. By so doing, the efficiency of the light source can be maintained, the service life of the light source may be extended, etc.
