Abstract: The invention relates to a projection module (1) for a motor vehicle headlight. The module (1) serves for generating different light distributions. It comprises a plurality of light sources (2, 3) which are switchable independently of one another. In order to generate a first light distribution (12) with the horizontal bright-dark boundary (13), light from a first light source group (2) is coupled into an optical element (9) arranged in the beam path. The optical element (9) has a totally reflecting underside (9a) having a contour corresponding to the course of the bright-dark boundary (13). The light coupled out from the optical element (9) is projected onto the road by a projection lens (11) for generating the first light distribution (12). A further light source group (3) is additionally activated in order to generate a second light distribution (15). The light emitted by said group (3) illuminates a region of the light distribution (15) above the bright-dark boundary (13).

  • Patent number: 7775698
Abstract: A vehicle lamp including a projector headlight for a low beam can include a light source, an ellipsoidal reflector, a projector and shade. Light emitted from the light source can form a fundamental light distribution pattern from the projector lens via the ellipsoidal reflector by shielding an upwards portion of the light with the shade. The shade can form respective thin blurred parts on and/or underneath a horizontal cut-off line for both a driving lane portion and an oncoming lane portion using a top edge line and a top surface of the shade. Therefore, a contrasting difference between the upper and lower sides of the horizontal cut-off line can be reduced so as to be able to conform to a light distribution standard for a headlight. Adjustment of the light distribution pattern can be facilitated due to tonal difference between the horizontal cut-off line of the driving lane and the oncoming lane.

The light distribution expanded in the longitudinal direction of a vehicle 3 makes the light less likely to impinge on a side surface of the vehicle 3, so that the rear part of the vehicle 3 can be illuminated efficiently. As a result, maximum illumination can be achieved with the minimum amount of light. In addition, because the range of illumination is long in the longitudinal direction, not only the area around an occupant's feet outside a front door 5 but also an area around the feet outside a rear door 6 can be illuminated easily.

One or more LEDs are mounted on a distal side of a printed circuit board, which also includes the circuitry that drives the one or more LEDs. The circuit board and a thermal pad are screwed/riveted to a heat sink, then the heat sink is mounted to a lateral face of a housing. The LEDs emit diverging light laterally inside the housing. One face of the housing is a faceted parabolic reflector, which receives the diverging light from the LEDs and reflects a collimated beam longitudinally to the front of the housing, where it passes through a clear cover and exits the lamp. The facets on the parabolic reflector angularly deviate portions of the reflected beam, so that the reflected light is collimated, and is angularly broader than a single collimated beam.
