Abstract: A reflector laminate, and backlights and displays incorporating such reflector laminates are disclosed. The reflector laminate includes a substrate and a reflector that are adhered together by a plurality of adhesive protrusions. The adhesive protrusions provide for a plurality of voids between the reflector and the substrate, so that a free reflector surface is adjacent to an air gap between the reflector and substrate. The reflector can include a multilayer interference reflector, and the presence of the air gap ensures high reflectivity for the laminate. The reflector can be adhered to a solid lightguide, a frame enclosing a portion of a backlight, a frame enclosing a hollow lightguide cavity, or an optical sheet positioned at the output surface of a backlight.

Abstract: A backlight unit includes: a wiring board having a light source mounted thereon; a light guide plate; a light-shielding pressure-sensitive adhesive sheet; and a light diffusion sheet. The front surface of the light guide plate includes an effective region serving as the planar light source and a light entering region ranging from the end surface into which the light enters to the effective region. The wiring board and the light-shielding pressure-sensitive adhesive sheet each have a part positioned in the light entering region. The light diffusion sheet is arranged from the effective region to the light entering region, and overlaps with the light-shielding pressure-sensitive adhesive sheet in the light entering region. On a side closer to the effective region with respect to the light-shielding pressure-sensitive adhesive sheet, the light entering region is covered with the light diffusion sheet without a gap.

  • Patent number: 8851735
Abstract: A uniform reflective light-guide apparatus can accompany an optional edge light source and includes a light-guiding layer, a reflective layer and a light-exiting surface. The light-guiding layer further has a lateral side to define a light-introducing surface for allowing entrance of lights from the edge light source. The reflective layer is to reflect incident lights back to the light-guiding layer. The light-exiting surface perpendicular to the light-introducing surface is to allow at least a portion of the lights in the light-guiding layer to leave the light-guide apparatus. The reflective layer and the light-guiding layer are manufactured integrally by a co-extrusion process so as to avoid possible existence of an air spacing between the reflective layer and the light-guiding layer.

Abstract: A waveguide light diffuser panel is disclosed that diffuses source lights and transmits ambient light. Conventional waveguide light diffusers diffuse all light and therefore provide a hazy outcome. In manufacturing a waveguide transparent diffuser, a printing method, such as inkjet printing, may be used. In this method, dot micro-lenses are formed on one side of a panel, which cover a portion of the panel in a staggered or random arrangement. The other side of the panel is coated with an anti-reflective material, or the shape of the panel may be concave. The dot shape is designed for efficient reflection of the incident light, as opposed to conventional hazy diffusers in which the reflection efficiency is low. High reflection efficiency in this case compensates for the reduced dot coverage.

Abstract: Extended area lighting devices include a light guide and diffractive surface features on a major surface of the light guide, at least some diffractive surface features adapted to couple guided-mode light out of the light guide. The diffractive features include first and second diffractive features disposed on respective first and second portions of the major surface. A patterned light transmissive layer, including a second light transmissive medium, optically contacts the second diffractive features but not the first diffractive features. A first light transmissive medium optically contacts the first but not the second diffractive features. The first and second portions may define indicia, and the first and second diffractive features provide low distortion for viewing objects through the light guide such that the indicia is not readily apparent to users when guided-mode light does not propagate within the light guide. Optical films having such diffractive features are also disclosed.

Abstract: The present invention provides technology that can efficiently guide light to the interior of a key sheet and prevents light from leaking from the circumferences of key tops. A key sheet has a light-shielding dark print layer, on the rear surface of a base sheet, that is a cured body of a coating liquid that is not dissolve to the surface of the base sheet, and also has a smooth surface between the base sheet and the dark print layer. The invention can make light transmitting in the base sheet hard to enter the dark print layer so that the light can be efficiently guided in the base sheet, and also can prevent light from transmitting through the base sheet by blocking the light.
