Abstract: A portable light for emergency illumination which is activated in response to the sound emitted by a smoke alarm device, which light has an efficient and reliable battery conserving circuit. The present light includes a switch interconnecting a battery and a light bulb for selectively activating the light bulb and a circuit interconnecting a microphone and the switch for selectively activating the switch in response to a smoke alarm signal. A strobe circuit interconnects the source of power and the circuit for periodically activating the circuit which, therefore, draws power for only a small fraction of the time.

  • Patent number: 4528620
Abstract: An improved audio chandelier that has, in addition to its conventional illuminating purpose, an audio system such as a stereophonic radio or a security system incorporated into its structure, the former to furnish, for example, music, while the latter has as its purpose to warn of unwanted intrusions and disasters, for example, such as fires, by means of stimulus-responsive warning signals. Ventilation is provided for cooling the various systems components. Control, sensing and energizing means may be provided within a common housing. The modular construction of the device makes assembly and disassembly convenient without the use of special or any other kinds of tools. Ventilation by natural convection maintains electronic and electrical systems within acceptable operating temperatures.

  • Patent number: 4432041
Abstract: A self-contained, portable lighting apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus functions as an escape light in conjunction with smoke detector alarms in that it is activated by detecting the sound of such alarms. A lighting unit includes circuitry for detecting the alarm of a smoke detector, integrating the detected signal over a predetermined time to minimize the incidence of false alarm, circuitry for delaying the shutting off of the light after the alarm signal has ceased and circuitry for detecting a low voltage condition of the batteries and for providing an intermittent sound that is indicative of a low voltage battery condition.

  • Patent number: 4410930
Abstract: A free standing outdoor telephone booth is provided with a photo voltaic (PV) array, one or more rechargeable storage batteries and electrical control circuit which includes a temperature compensated control for limiting the supply of electrical energy from the PV array to the rechargeable battery to avoid over charging the battery, an ambient light (solar insolation) sensing circuit for controlling the electrical lamp load, to turn the lamp ON during dark ambient and OFF during light ambient conditions. In addition, the total discharge limit of the storage battery is controlled to a safe operating limit and a means is disclosed to power a fluorescent lamp at energy conserving intensities with energy derived from the rechargeable storage battery. The lamp control circuitry is preferably constituted by a high frequency power inverter with regulated output power to energize a low wattage fluorescent lamp and to dim the fluorescent lamp when the telephone is not in use.

  • Patent number: 4250537
Abstract: A home entertainment system and lighting cabinet simulates the sound and lighting effects of a discotheque. Light rays from a bank of differently colored lights are directed both to a mirrored rotating globe and to a rear reflecting panel behind the globe. A plurality of reflecting part-spherical domes and pyramidal-like projections are arranged on the rear panel and are configurated to reflect at least some of the impinging light rays back to the globe for subsequent reflection therefrom. The light rays reflected off the globe, domes and projections are projected about the room in which the system is located in a very dense pattern of reflected differently colored images. A stereo music system is mounted on the cabinet to combine a discotheque sound effect with the above-described lighting effect.

Abstract: Grooves or channels are formed along the edges, and/or at other selected locations, of a guitar, of other musical instruments; as might be done in purfling and binding for such instrument. A fiber-optic bundle is laid into the groove and overlayed with a veneer of suitable wood, or other appropriate materials, but in such a manner that ends of selected fibers are aligned with and/or extend through suitable apertures formed through the veneer overlay. The individual fiber-optic bundles are then gathered into a main fiber-optic trunk line which is directed through an entry channel and away from the instrument; terminating at a source of illumination.
