Abstract: Disclosed is a tidal current meter that measures the velocity of a tidal current. The tidal current meter includes an oscillator, a calculation section, a depression angle setup section, and a drive section. The oscillator is capable of transmitting an ultrasonic wave into water and receiving the reflection of the transmitted ultrasonic wave. The calculation section calculates the velocity in accordance with the Doppler shift frequency of the reflection received by the oscillator. The depression angle setup section sets a depression angle, that is, the angle formed by the transmission direction of the ultrasonic wave and a horizontal plane. The drive section drives the oscillator in such a manner as to transmit the ultrasonic wave and receive the reflection of the transmitted ultrasonic wave at the depression angle set by the depression angle setup section.

Abstract: A vehicle approach warning apparatus for abnormality detection in various abnormal modes is provided. In the vehicle approach warning apparatus, a sound generator output from the microcomputer passes an AMP and HPF, and an output voltage corresponding to the sound generator output is applied to a speaker to emit vehicle approach sound. The vehicle approach warning apparatus includes a voltage sensor circuit and outputs a check usage output as the sound generator output at the abnormality detection. A single frequency output that is within a resonance frequency band of the speaker and that can be poorly reproduced by the speaker is used as the check usage output. The abnormality detection is performed based on whether an integration circuit voltage outputted from the voltage sensor circuit is within a voltage range being an abnormality determination threshold.

When a threshold value used for determining an existence of an obstacle is compared with a receiving signal having been amplified at a predetermined gain, the sonar having a receiving mode is provided with the gain which is higher than that of the sonar having a sending/receiving mode. Thus, the sensitivity of the sonar having the receiving mode can be improved so that a continuous sound field of the sonar is broadened. • Patent number: 4240152
Abstract: A system for locating and determining the distance to an object with respect to a movable vehicle is provided which utilizes at least three transducers wherein at least two of the three transducers operates either as a receiver transducer, in which case the remaining transducer operates as a transmitter transducer, or two of the three transducers operate as transmitter transducers in which case the remaining transducer operates as a receiver transducer with the system also including means for sequentially operating the three transducers for sending and receiving reflected ultrasonic signals to simultaneously determine both the location and distance of persons or objects with respect to the transducers.

  • Patent number: 4228530
Abstract: The level of mud in the mud return line of a rotary drilling rig is determined by cutting a hole in the top of the line and securing over the hole the saddle shaped base flange of a heat insulated sound tube supporting the ultra sonic transducer of an air coupled sonar distance measuring apparatus. The apparatus continuously digitally displays the average mud level. Upon a first manual command the apparatus makes a printed record of the level, time, and date. The apparatus give an alarm signal whenever the time averaged level departs a predetermined amount from a previously set datum level. When a second manual command is exercised the alarm is discontinued and a record of level is made and the datum level is reset to the existing level. The departure measuring means is reactivated to give an alarm signal upon sufficient departure of mud level from the new datum level.A third manual command makes a record and turns off the recorder while a trip is being made and until the third command controller is reset.

  • Patent number: 4225949
Abstract: In an apparatus for guiding or controlling a vessel over the center of an unmarked channel, a pair of ultrasonic transducers are mounted athwartship on the hull of the vessel and directed downwardly to transmit ultrasonic pulses and to receive corresponding pulses reflected from the floor of the body of water. Time durations between transmitted and corresponding received pulses are measured to determine floor or channel depth below the port and starboard sides of the vessel. The depths are digitally encoded and supplied to a comparator which generates a signal indicating whether deeper water is port or starboard of the vessel. The comparator signal is supplied to a display to instruct the navigator whether to steer port, starboard or to maintain course to guide the vessel over the center of the channel. The comparator signal may be also supplied to a rudder servo to automatically steer over the channel center. A digital filter is provided to eliminate any spurious readings obtained by the transducers.

  • Patent number: 4225952
Abstract: A marine depth sounding apparatus including a floatable housing carrying a sonic transducer for emitting sound waves toward the bottom of a body of water and for detecting the reflections of such sound waves, and a sound transmitter for emitting an audible signal when the information provided by the sonic transducer indicates that the depth of the water is less than a predetermined depth. The apparatus may be cast away from the vessel to provide information concerning the depth of water at locations remote from the vessel. A circuit is disclosed for comparing the time period required for sound waves to travel a distance corresponding to the predetermined depth with the actual time elapsed between the emitting of the sound waves by the sonic transducer and their detection by the sonic transducer.

  • Patent number: 4221004
Abstract: An ulrasonic liquid level measurement device is used to measure the depth of a flowing liquid in a channel using an ultrasonic transducer that is positioned out of contact with the liquid and above and directed toward the channel. An ultrasonic burst is directed toward the channel and the reflected echo from the surface of the liquid is returned and sensed by the transducer. The transit time of ultrasonic transmission and echo return is indicative of the liquid level. An adjustable discriminator is provided to specify a maximum liquid level in the channel and a minimum liquid level, which, typically is the floor of the channel. The maximum and minimum levels are adjustable to accomodate variable channel configurations and transducer mounting arrangements. Automatic adjustment is provided to compensate for different cable lengths which may be used to connect the ultrasonic transducer to the transducer driver and receiving section.

  • Patent number: 4184142
Abstract: Circuit means for keying the transmitter of a flasher type depth sounder when the flasher arm motor is off. An alarm circuit is included in the depth sounder which sounds an alarm if the vessel moves away from a preset depth. When the flasher arm motor is on, a pulse is supplied by a magnet on the flasher arm passing over a pickup coil in the circuit. When the flasher arm motor is off, the pulse generating circuit is designed to provide a transmitter keying signal as well as to reset the alarm.
