  • Publication number: 20140233363
Abstract: Iron-platinum (FePt) based magnetic recording media structures that provide small grain size and isolated-grain configurations suitable for high-density magnetic recording. In one of the structures, the recording media structure includes a thin film containing grains of L10 FePt and boron as a segregant contained in intergranular regions located among the FePt grains. In another structure, the recording media structure includes a thin film containing grains of L10 FePt, wherein the film is formed on an underlayer containing at least one material selected to control the size of the FePt grains in the film. Proper choices of materials, relative amounts of the materials, processing parameters, and other variables permit these structures to be formed with grain sizes, magnetization orientations, and perpendicular coercivities that allow designers to create magnetic storage devices having storage densities of 1 Tbit/in2 and greater.

  • Publication number: 20110222379
Abstract: A data-overwriting technique that facilitates determining whether data is new or old, when reading thereof. A tape recording apparatus includes: a receiving unit for receiving information on overwrite starting position and an overwrite request; a trying unit for trying to determine a beginning position of a data unit based on the information on an overwrite starting position, wherein the data unit is a unit of writing data recorded on a tape medium; an overwrite executing unit for executing overwriting from the determined overwrite starting position in response to a success of the determination by the trying unit; and a type judging unit for judging whether the data unit that is recorded at the overwrite starting position is a null data unit or not in response to a failure of the determination by the trying unit. The trying unit responds to judgment that the data unit is the null data unit by trying to determine a beginning of a data unit following the data unit as the overwrite starting position.

  • Publication number: 20040181388
Abstract: A system is described including a disk-based data cartridge that contains a plurality of disk drives, and that physically conforms to industry standard dimensions for magnetic data tape cartridges. A tape drive emulator receives the disk-based data cartridge and stores data within the plurality of disk drives in accordance with a format that emulates a tape storage format. A controller within the tape drive emulator utilizes RAID techniques to store data on the plurality of disk drives, thereby achieving increased performance, fault tolerance, or combinations thereof. A host computing device communicates the data to the tape drive emulator via a tape drive communication protocol. An automation unit selectively retrieves the disk-based data cartridge from a data tape cartridge library and engages the disk-based data cartridge with the tape drive emulator.

  • Patent number: 6580581
Abstract: A servo system and method position a head laterally with respect to magnetic tape longitudinal defined servo bands arranged in a longitudinally shifted pattern for identification, and separated by data tracks. A servo controller responds to a loss of lateral position, sensing an estimated longitudinal position of the magnetic tape. If the estimated longitudinal position is within a predetermined distance of an end of the tape, the servo controller operates a drive to continuously move the tape away from the sensed end. The servo controller senses a home lateral position sensor to determine whether a compound actuator is within a predetermined distance of the edge of the magnetic tape. If so, it operates the coarse actuator portion of the compound actuator to move laterally away from the edge of the magnetic tape; else, to move toward the edge.
