Abstract: Provided is a medium capable of implementing a large-capacity recording at low cost per bit. A medium including a network of metal wires and recording materials each provided at an intersection of the metal wires. Surface plasmons are made to propagate along the metal wires. Two surface plasmons are made to propagate in two different directions and to collide with each other at a certain position. Multiple-layer recording is carried out by changing the recording materials at the certain position.
Abstract: According to one embodiment, a pit having a shape wherein the shapes of the top of a recording mark (recording start position) and the end of the recording mark (recording end position) are symmetrical can be formed on a stamper master with high reproducibility. As a result, the noise level/jitter degree of the reproduction signal obtained by reproduction from an optical disc as a final product can be reduced, thereby manufacturing at low cost the optical disc from which a signal can be stably reproduced.
Abstract: A method of obtaining directivity in an optical waveguide includes the steps of falling incident light on surface of diffuse reflection members arranged at a center portion of the optical waveguide, generating a first table relative to an amount of emitted light that is acquired at a circumference of the optical waveguide by controlling at least one of an image control factor for changing an image of the incident light and a coordinate control factor for changing coordinates of the incident light with them being changed, and generating a second table relative to a pattern of the light which is incident to the diffuse reflection member by seeking for a combination of the image and the coordinates of the light based on the generated first table.

Abstract: If the read speed is increased while high-frequency modulated carrier is fixed at a constant frequency, it becomes difficult to separate the read signal from the carrier by using bandwidth limitation of the analog system because the upper limit of the read signal band nears to the carrier frequency. Moreover, if the separation between them is eased by raising the carrier frequency, a problem that write-waveform controls become difficult arises. However, the carrier amplitude can be suppressed simultaneously preventing leakage to the read signal band by converting the carrier frequency into the stop-band of the adaptive equalizer by making the use of aliasing that occurs at the A/D conversion.

Abstract: A player is provided that is capable of playing discs of either a first or a second configuration. Both types of discs can be double-sided optical discs formed with data tracks. In one configuration, the tracks on one side follow one spiral while the tracks on the other side follow a second spiral, the two spirals being oriented in opposite directions as viewed from the respective sides, and therefore being mirror images of each other. This allows data to be read by a player seamlessly from both sides of the disc without changing the direction of rotation of the disc. In the other configuration, the tracks follow identical spirals. The disc is then rotated in one direction for one side and the other direction for the other side.

Abstract: In a super-resolution optical disk for the purpose of achieving an increase in the density of recording data by reproducing a recording mark smaller than optical resolution, the optimum reproduction power needs to be determined since the quality of a super-resolution reproduced signal strongly depends on the reproduction laser power. However, since the track error signal required for tracking servo also depends on the reproduction power, there is a need for a method for determining the reproduction power taking into account both the stabilization of tracking servo and a quality improvement of the reproduction signal. The reproduction power is changed under conditions with focusing servo applied but without application of tracking servo. Thereby, a cross track signal is detected to identify a reproduction power region that leads to quality improvement of both a reproduction signal and a track error signal.

Abstract: In a method for manufacturing a bearing member which is made of a porous material and has dynamic pressure grooves formed by electrochemical machining, the bearing member is impregnated with liquid such as hydrosoluble liquid or water prior to electrochemical machining. Since the hydrosoluble liquid or water is retained due to capillary force in the bearing member for which electrochemical machining is to be performed, the hydrosoluble liquid or water is not replaced with an electrolyte used in the electrochemical machining. Thus, the step of removing the electrolyte after electrochemical machining can be omitted, increasing production efficiency. Moreover, the bearing member is free from a trouble of rust as the electrolyte does not remain in the bearing member. Since the hydrosoluble liquid or water exhibits excellent affinity for the electrolyte, it does not harm processing accuracy in electrochemical machining and can be easily removed after electrochemical machining.

Abstract: A hologram recording medium is provided which can prevent sensitization of a region thereof other than a data recording region thereby to prevent deterioration of a characteristic of the hologram recording medium. The hologram recording medium includes partition members for partitioning a recording material. Upon recording, unnecessary light generated when signal light and reference light enter the recording material is blocked from propagating in the recording material by the partition members and cannot advance into adjacent partitions. Therefore, unnecessary sensitization of the recording material by the unnecessary light can be prevented, and particularly, decrease of the recording capacity can be prevented. Consequently, the performance of a hologram recording and reproduction apparatus which adopts, for example, a multiplex recording system can be exhibited fully.
