Abstract: The continuous update of the Recorded Area Indicator on a DVD+R disc leads to a loss in performance of the recorder. If the update is not continuous, the Recorded Area Indicator on the disc may not accurately reflect the status. In order to ensure that the Recorded Area Indicator accurately reflects the status but avoids loss of performance, the update of the Recorded Area Indicator is performed when a close track session command is issued to the drive signaling the end of the recording, regardless of whether the track or session on the disc remains open. During the recording the Recorded Area Indicator is kept and updated in the memory of the recorder.

Abstract: Congested rewriting in the same area is to be evaded to suppress the tendency towards occurrence of defective areas. When a stream 1 has been recorded, the last written address, representing the last written position, is stored. When recording a stream 2 next, recording is started directly following the position indicated by the last written address for the stream 1. The last written address, corresponding to the last address of the recording position, is stored. If the stream 2 is erased for recording a stream 3, recording is started not at a position directly following the last written address of the stream 1, but from a position directly following the last written address of the stream 2. When the stream 3 has reached the end of a recording area, the next following data is recorded as from a position directly following the stream 1.

Abstract: A recording medium storing a write protection information, and a write protection method for protecting data recorded on a recordable and/or rewritable disc from unwanted overwriting or erasing. In order for write protection of a disc in a bare state that is usually used in a cartridge having a recognition switch for write-protection, such as a DVD-RAM, write protection information is recorded in a Lead-in area, a Lead-out area or a recording information area other than a user data area of the disc, and the data is protected from unwanted overwriting or erasing using the write protection information. Also, even though the write protection information stored on a disc does not match the state of a recognition switch of a case for write-protection, the data can be prevented from unwanted overwriting or erasing. • Patent number: 7643393
Abstract: Theft, distribution, and piracy of digital content on optical media (software, video, audio, e-books, any content of any kind that is digitally stored and distributed) is often accomplished by copying it directly to another disc using commonly available copy tools and recordable optical media, or the copying of media to another mass manufactured disc. Methods which cause the copy process to become lengthy and inconvenient, or which produce copies that are significantly measurably different from the original and therefore be recognizable as copies, may deter or prevent an unauthorized individual from making copies. In addition, methods which generate an intended slow-down in the read process of the media can be used to authenticate the media at run time. This offers significant advantages to content creators who wish to protect their products.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method for quickly starting recording seamless-playable data are provided. At the end of recording a preceding record content, identification information of a clip information file for a subsequent record content to be recorded next is recorded in an attribute information storage file set for the preceding record content. More specifically, a clip information file for a subsequent chapter is reserved at the end of recording of a preceding chapter, and an identifier of the clip information file is recorded in the clip information file for the preceding record chapter. Through the prior reservation process of the clip information file, an updating process for updating the clip information file at the start of recording of the subsequent chapter becomes unnecessary. Abstract: An improved system and method enhances performance of updates to sequential block storage of a storage system. A disk-based sort procedure is provided to establish locality among updates (write data) held in a disk-based log, thereby enabling the write data to be efficiently written to home locations on a home location array. As the write data is received, a log manager of the storage system temporarily stores the data efficiently on the disk-based log. As more write data arrives, the log manager sorts the data in the log in accordance with the sort procedure, thus increasing the locality of data when stored on the home location array. When the log approaches capacity, the log manager writes the sorted data to their home locations on the array with high locality and performance.

  • Patent number: 7356142
Abstract: A method for recording data on an optical medium is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving a first plurality of frames of data at a Cross Interleave Reed-Solomon Code (CIRC) encoder, encoding the first plurality of frames of data by the CIRC encoder to generate a second plurality of frames of data, generating a set of data to form a Q sub-channel, altering selected data bits in the Q sub-channel to form an encoded Q sub-channel, forming a plurality of control bytes including the encoded Q sub-channel, adding one of the control bytes to each one of the second plurality of frames of data to generate a third plurality of frames of data, encoding selected portions of the third plurality of frames of data by an EFM encoder to generate a plurality of channel frames, and recording the channel frames on the optical medium. This method allows CDs to be recorded that cannot be played by conventional CD players.

  • Patent number: 7349301
Abstract: A recording medium that is a write-once recording medium with data rewritability, thereby increasing the usability of the write-once recording medium, is provided. In a write-once recording medium, a main data area has a normal record and playback sub-area (a user data section), a rewriting replacement sub-area (an OSA), and a replacement management sub-area (an ISA). In response to a request to write data to an address at which data has been recorded, the rewritten data is recorded in the rewriting replacement sub-area (the OSA), and replacement management information that associates the original address with the address in the rewriting replacement sub-area is recorded into the replacement management sub-area (the ISA). Thus, data rewriting is achieved. Accordingly, a write-once recording medium can be substantially used as a data rewritable recording medium.

Abstract: To provide a method of managing data in a situation where audio and video data, acquired by a single video recording session, has been split into multiple files. A data processor writes a data stream, representing video, and management information for playing back the video based on the data stream on at least one storage medium. In the data stream, picture data of respective pictures forming the video and time information, showing presentation times of the respective pictures, are stored in association with each other. The data processor includes: a processor for generating, as the management information, a table that associates the time information, storage locations of the picture data in the data stream, and file information identifying a stream file to store the picture data with each other for one or more pictures; and a controller for writing the data stream and the management information as one or more stream files and as one or more management information files, respectively, on the storage medium.

  • Patent number: 7269110
Thus, the write protection can be ensured when a recordable and/or rewritable recording medium, such as DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW, is used in a bare state.
