Abstract: Disclosed herein is a disc playback apparatus with a built-in disc drive which performs hand-close process. The control unit 60 has the A/D input port P which is given the voltage of the terminal of the loading motor 78, after voltage reduction by the dividing resistors R1 and R2. It acquires the voltage applied to the A/D input port P at intervals of 20 ms if the disc tray 10 is in its completely ejected state and compares the acquired voltage with a predefined threshold value. If the acquired voltage is lower than the predefined threshold value, it clears the count, and if the acquired voltage is higher than the predefined value, it increments the count. If the count over 5, the control unit 60 delivers control signals to the driver circuit 88, thereby driving the loading motor to retract the disc tray 10.

Abstract: A push-pull signal is detected from light reflected from a disk-shaped storage medium on which wobbling grooves are formed as recording tracks and address information is recorded by forming pre-pits on lands between adjacent grooves. A fundamental amplitude variation signal indicating the fundamental amplitude variation of the push-pull signal is acquired, and a reference voltage is generated by adding an offset voltage to the fundamental amplitude variation signal. Pre-pits are detected by comparing the push-pull signal with the reference voltage. Because the reference voltage is produced on the basis of the fundamental amplitude variation signal indicating the variation components of the push-pull signal due to the wobbling of grooves and noise, the variation components due to the wobbling and noise are reflected in the reference voltage. Furthermore, the variation components of the push-pull signal corresponding to the pre-pits are also reflected to a properly small extent in the reference voltage.

Abstract: An optical disc is manufactured under a uniform condition by forming grooves and lands on the entire surface of the disc. The optical disc is configured to obtain a reliable reproduction signal, and the grooves and lands are formed on a lead-in area, a user data area and a lead-out area of the optical disc. Since the same manufacturing condition can be adopted in mastering discs, the yield can be enhanced and the manufacturing cost can be reduced.

Abstract: An optical disk device which drives an HD-DVD or the like. When recording or reproducing data with respect to an optical disk of HD-DVD, the address information is demodulated by an address decoding circuit and is supplied to a system controller. The system controller performs error checking using the CRC technique. When a resulting CRC value does not correspond to CRC bits, the system controller regards a bit in which the number of waves in wobbles having the same phase is not four, which is a predetermined value, as an error bit, and performs bit data replacement with respect to the error bit. Specifically, the system controller searches for a combination of bit values by which a resulting CRC value matches the CRC bits, thereby performing error correction.

Abstract: An apparatus for detecting position of blank areas for an optical disc in an optical disc drive according to a wobble signal and a blank signal includes an address decoder for generating a physical address value according to the wobble signal; a counting device coupled to the address decoder for generating a count value according to the wobble signal; and a decision circuit coupled to the counting device for determining whether the count value is within a predetermined range when the edge of the blank signal occurs. If the count value is within the predetermined range when the blank edge occurs, the decision circuit generates a position value corresponding to a blank area of the optical disc.

Abstract: A record carrier has a servo track (4) indicating an information track (9) intended for recording information blocks. The servo track (4) has a periodic variation of a physical parameter at a predetermined frequency and modulated parts for encoding position information at regular intervals. The modulated parts start with a bit sync element and are of a data type having a data bit element, or of a word sync type having a word sync element. The word sync element and the data bit element are modulated according to a same predetermined type of modulation of the periodic variation. The effective strength of a modulated element is the number of periodic variations that are substantially different and available for detection of that element. The effective strength of the word sync element and of the data bit element are equal.

Abstract: In an optical disk apparatus using an optical disk having groove tracks and land tracks alternately arranged therein and land pre-pits indicating position information defined in the land tracks, the optical disk is irradiated with a light beam and light reflected from the optical disk is received on divisional light-receiving surfaces to generate a light detection signal for each of the light-receiving surfaces. A pre-pit component signal corresponding to the land pre-pits is generated based on the light detection signals. A binarization-level signal is output. A pre-pit detection signal is generated by comparing the pre-pit component signal with the binarization-level signal. The position information is obtained using the pre-pit detection signal. Pulses of the pre-pit detection signal are counted in units of a period that is based on the position information. The signal level of the binarization-level signal is controlled based on the count values.
