A recording unit block in which invalid data is partially padded is written on an information storage medium along with padding information indicating that the invalid data is included in the recording unit block. The padding information is useful in determining whether the recording unit block includes the padding data. Accordingly, unnecessary retrial processes of a drive system are reduced such that the performance of the drive system is improved and error correction capability is enhanced.

Abstract: A method of operating a disk drive comprises scanning each Logical Block Address (LBA) of the disk drive to detect a read error or reading the LBA from a media defect list. The LBA may then be converted to a corresponding physical location on the media and a scan of the corresponding physical location and of nearby physical locations that are within a proximity threshold of the corresponding physical locations may be performed to find media defects. Based thereon, it may then be determined whether a media scratch is present and at least one or more data sectors associated with the media scratch may be relocated to a spare location on the media if the media scratch is determined to be present. If the media scratch is determined not to be present, only the data sector associated with the corresponding physical location may be relocated to the spare location.

Abstract: A focus servo control device includes a first detector, first controller, second detector, and second controller. The first detector detects a first focus error signal. The first controller controls the objective lens based on the first focus error signal, so that a focal point of the first laser agrees with the guide layer. The second detector detects a second focus error signal. The second controller changes a relative distance between the focal point of the second laser and the focal point of the first laser, so that the focal point of the second laser agrees with a target recording/reproducing layer.

  • Patent number: 8547809
Abstract: There is a need to prevent a possible erroneous detection of an off-track condition during recording to an optical disk. The above need can be addressed by, for example, determining an off-track condition has occurred when a light spot is located at least half-way from the track being recorded toward another track adjacent the track being recorded, and stopping a recording operation. In another example, the above need can be addressed by determining that off-track has occurred based on an output of a first off-track detector which detects that the light spot is off the track based on a wobble signal, an output of a second off-track detector which detects that the light spot is off the track based on a tracking error signal, and an output of a zero-cross detector which detects that the tracking error signal crosses zero based on an output of the tracking error signal.

Abstract: An optical disk inspecting apparatus 10 plays an optical disk at a high speed and determines, based on error information provided during the high-speed reproduction, whether or not errors of a number exceeding a first threshold value have occurred. Then, when it is determined that errors of a number exceeding a first threshold value have occurred, the optical disk inspecting apparatus 10 performs high-speed principal determination of executing high-speed reproduction in this segment and determining presence or absence of errors of a number exceeding a second threshold value and also performs low-speed principal determination of executing low-speed reproduction in this segment and determining presence or absence of errors of a number exceeding the second threshold value. When errors of a number exceeding the second threshold value are detected, it is determined that there is a defect, and NG is outputted.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide an apparatus. The apparatus includes a pick-up unit, such as an optical pick-up unit, a wobble channel and a defect detector. The pick-up unit generates a push-pull signal corresponding to a wobbled track of a storage medium. The wobble channel includes circuits to receive the push-pull signal, obtain a wobble signal from the push-pull signal, and calculate a wobble amplitude metric based on the wobble signal. The defect detector compares the wobble amplitude metric to a threshold to detect wobble defects.
