  • Patent number: 8599663
Abstract: An approach is described that allows an optical disc drive to accurately verify the power level of irradiation beam power levels associated a write strategy used in high speed, high density optical disc media formats using a front monitor diode with a relatively slow rise time and/or relative slow fall time compared to the clock cycle speed of the write strategy signal. A portion of encoded data to be written to an optical disc media may be overwritten to include a predetermined data pattern. During write strategy processing of the data, the predetermined data pattern is replaced with a constant write strategy power level. The constant write strategy output placed within the write strategy signal may control the optical disc drive laser to emit a constant irradiation beam for a duration sufficiently long to allow the front monitor diode to obtain an accurate measure of the irradiation beam power level.

Abstract: When power is supplied to an ODD used by being externally attached to a PC via a USB port, it is desirable not to cause an error to occur owing to occurrence of a power-on reset even when the power supplying ability of the PC is insufficient. After the ODD has been connected with the PC and started, the ODD executes an operation of large current consumption for a predetermined period of time and judges whether a power-on reset occurs or not while the operation is being executed. When the power-on reset does not occur, the ODD is set to operate on the basis of the highest specification. When the power-on reset has occurred, the specification is set lower so as to operate the ODD with reduced current consumption.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, single-sided dual-layer recordable disc 100 may be used. Information recording is performed by forming mark and space portions on data area DA using modulated laser power. Pp denotes the maximum laser power or peak power for forming the mark portion, and Pb denotes the bias power for forming the space portion. Power ratio Pb/Pp is calculated for each of recording layers L0 and L1. Information is recorded on any of the recording layers L0 and L1 based on the result of calculation. Here, the calculated power ratio Pb/Pp changes among the recording layers L0 and L1, thereby optimizing the recording condition for a multi-layer recordable optical disc within relatively short time.

Because recording and reproduction are made repeatedly, however, the same time is consumed for reproduction even if recording is made at a double-speed, for example, and recording is substantially equal to recording at a normal recording speed. The verify operation is effective for further improving reliability but reduces the substantial recording speed to a half. To improve recording performance by automatically turning ON and OFF the verify operation in accordance with disks, medium information called “media ID” unique to a disk is acquired in a read-in area of the optical disk. • Patent number: 7477586
Abstract: The present invention provides an optical disk apparatus in which a first, second, third, and fourth optical disks are selectively installed, the first and second optical disks having different recording film characteristics and both having a single-layer recording layer, the third and fourth optical disks having different recording film characteristics and both having a double-layer recording layer. A control section determines which of the first to fourth optical disks has been installed, on the basis of the level of a reproduction signal from an optical head. Recording media serving as the optical disks are formed so that the light reflectances of a single-layer L-H medium in an initialized state, an L0 layer of a double-layer H-L medium in the initialized state, and an L0 layer of a double-layer L-H medium in an uninitialized state do not overlap the light reflectance of a single-layer H-L medium in the initialized state.

  • Patent number: 7342859
Abstract: In an optical recording system, according to a wobble sync signal obtained from a wobble signal associated with a physical track of a recording medium being recorded with input data by a recording module operated in a default constant angular velocity (CAV) recording mode, operation of the recording module can be switched from the CAV recording mode to a constant linear velocity (CLV) recording mode by a mode control switch. The mode control switch is forced to switch operation of the recording module to the CLV recording mode when result of a comparison between a write clock signal generated from the wobble sync signal when the recording module is operated by the mode control switch in the CAV recording mode, and a threshold signal corresponding to a threshold recording speed in the CAV recording mode indicates that the recording mode should be switched to the CLV recording mode but the mode control switch still keep the recording module staying in the CAV recording mode.

  • Patent number: 7319650
Abstract: The amount of light reflected from a disk is detected, and it is determined according to the amount of reflected light whether the disk is a recordable disk or a rewritable disk. The disk is controlled according to the result of determination such that it is rotated at a constant angular velocity (CAV) or at a constant linear velocity (CLV) and recording is executed. Further, rotation driving control of the disk is selected according to factors other than the type of the disk, such as according to whether random recording is allowed or not, according to a recording state in the disk, according to whether an alternative area is provided or not, according to a recording start position, or according to whether initialization is required or not. CLV control or CAV control is appropriately selected for a disk at recording to suppress a reduction in accessibility and a reduction in data transmission rate.

Abstract: A readable and writable radio frequency identification (RFID) tag is attached to a physical medium such as a CDROM or DVD. Each time a copy of the medium is created, a variable or count stored in the writable RFID is updated. In cases where the mechanism for reading and writing the RFID is in communication with the device making a copy of the medium, the created copy can have its permitted number of copies set to zero, or other restrictions put in place. Or the device can be prevented from making any copies. In this manner the total number of copies of an original product can be regulated. The RFID can be read or written from a mechanism in a CDROM or DVD player or the read/write mechanism can be in a different device such as in a computer, or in another device.
