  • Patent number: 9305550
Abstract: An apparatus and method for tracking dialogue and other sound signals in film, television or other systems with multiple channel sound is described. One or more audio channels which is expected to carry the speech of persons appearing in the program or other particular types of sounds is inspected to determine if that channel's audio includes particular sounds such as MUEVs, including phonemes corresponding to human speech patterns. If an improper number of particular sounds such as phonemes are found in the channel(s) an action such as a report, an alarm, a correction, or other action is taken. The inspection of the audio channel(s) may be made in conjunction with the appearance of corresponding images associated with the sound, such as visemes in the video signal, to improve the determination of types of sounds such as phonemes.

  • Patent number: 7930048
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling a wave field synthesis renderer with audio objects includes a provider for providing a scene description, wherein the scene description defines a temporal sequence of audio objects in an audio scene and further includes information on the source position of a virtual source as well as on a start or an end of the virtual source. Furthermore, the audio object includes at least a reference to an audio file associated with the virtual source. The audio objects are processed by a processor, in order to generate a single output data stream for each renderer module, wherein both information on the position of the virtual source and the audio file itself are included in mutual association in this output data stream. With this, high portability on the one hand and high quality due to secure data consistency on the other hand are achieved.

  • Patent number: 7751915
Abstract: For a level correction in a wave field synthesis system having a wave field synthesis module and an array of loudspeakers for providing sound to a presentation region, a correction value which is based on a set amplitude state in a presentation region is determined, the set amplitude state depending on a position of the virtual source or a type of the virtual source, and the actual amplitude state in the presentation region depending on the component signals for the loudspeakers due to the virtual source. The correction value determined is fed to a manipulator manipulating the audio signal associated to the virtual source before feeding to the wave field synthesis module, or the component signals for the individual loudspeakers due to the virtual source are manipulated to reduce a deviation between a set amplitude state and an actual amplitude state at one point or several in the presentation region.

  • Patent number: 7542815
Abstract: A digital audio signal processing system and method transforms two-channel stereo time-domain data into the frequency domain. Vector operations are performed upon the frequency-domain data by which signal components unique to one of the input channels are routed to one of the output channels, signal components unique to the other of the input channels are routed to another of the output channels, and signal components common to both channels are routed to a third and optionally to a fourth output channel. The frequency-domain output channels are then transformed back into the time-domain, forming an equivalent number of channels of output audio data. The vector operations are performed in a manner that preserves the overall information content of the input data.

  • Patent number: 7408851
Abstract: Compressed audio data for 5.1 channels stored in the DVD-ROM 11A is read by the AC-3 decoder 12 of a pseudo multi-channel stereo play-back apparatus and, after expansion, stored temporarily in a buffer 13, channel by channel. Among stored audio data stored in the buffer 13, audio data for left and right channels and for a front center channel are then subjected to the phase transformation. Audio data for left and right front channels are mixed with the phase transformed audio data by first and second mixing circuits 21 and 22 and mixed audio data are converted into analog audio signals by first and second D/A converters. The apparatus is capable of pseudo reproduction of the multi-channel audio signals stored in a recording medium such as a DVD-ROM by two channel play-back with an excellent sound effect which is not obtainable by usual two-channel play-back systems.

  • Patent number: 5798922
Abstract: A system for providing audible cues that enable a listener to identify locations of origins of sounds. In one embodiment, a front and rear signal are copies of an input signal. The rear signal is modified by application of a modified head related transfer function which is the difference between the front and rear head related transfer functions. Copies are then made of the front signal and the modified rear signal, one copy of each associated with a first channel and one copy of each associated with a second channel. Front/rear cues are applied by delaying one of the rear signals or inverting the phase of one of the rear signals. Volume levels are then modified according to the location of the sound source. Locations of sound sources, including sources location behind the user are therefore audibly distinguished. Thus, in an interactive environment, such as a video game environment, the sounds generated by moving objects can be readily modified by simply modifying the volume levels.

  • Patent number: 4812921
Abstract: A sound field expansion system applicable to a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus (VTR) which can expand the sound field in a simple construction. In the sound field expansion system, a circuit for virtually forming two comb filter characteristics is provided by adding a first audio signal and a second audio signal delayed by a predetermined interval of time with respect to the first audio signal and adding the first audio signal which is passed through a phase shift circuit which shifts the phase of the first audio signal so that the reproduced sound field can remarkably be expanded. Furthermore, a correction circuit for providing a predetermined frequency characteristic for the first or second audio signal is installed so that an acoustic image having a desired frequency band can be positioned.

  • Patent number: 4792974
Abstract: Surround stereo signals are synthesized from the composite or DME monaural sound tracks of audiovisual programs by use of multi-channel, computer-controlled digital circuitry and operator-programmed sound cues, the latter matching video time codes with audio control signals. The stereo signals have out-of-phase delay components, resulting in compatibility with conventional monaural audio equipment, and steerable pan components, resulting in selective sound placement capacility. Variable time delays and variable ratios of dry and delay are used in conjunction with panning movements to achieve a wide variety of acoustical effects, such as resonance, spread and cutting, which correlate the audio portion of the program with the video portion of the program. An operator selects and programs sound cues and stores them for playback by using a plurality of audio controls and a computer interface which are provided on an operator console. Subroutines are used for automated cue recording and for editing.

  • Patent number: 4642812
Abstract: A method for performing sound field enlargement in a digital audio reproducing apparatus such as a compact disc player. A sum is calculated between each received pair of right-channel and left-channel data read from the disc, and the resulting sum data is stored in a random access memory. After a predetermined delay time, the sum data are read from the memory and multiplexed with the then-incoming right-channel and left-channel data. The resulting data stream is converted to respective right-channel, left-channel, and delayed-sum analog signals, which are then subjected to low-pass filtering. The filtered signals are processed in a conventional manner to yield outputs signals which, when reproduced, produce a perception of an enlarged sound field.

  • Patent number: 4308424
Abstract: A source of monaural sound such as a radio receiver or record player provides an audio signal which is fed along parallel paths to a like number of speakers. In one or more paths there is a control which imparts amplification or gain to the signal. In the other path, however, a frequency dependent amplitude variation and phase delay means is interposed in the circuit. It is the purpose of this means to vary the amplitude response of that signal to introduce a bass boost of about a factor of two and a treble cut of about a factor of ten and to vary the phase shift of that signal to introduce from about a 180.degree. to about 225.degree. phase lag to the monaural signal, the amplitude response and phase lag being a function of the frequency of the signal, to impart a simulated stereo effect to the sound as heard from the plurality of speakers.
