Abstract: Methods, systems, and machine-readable media are disclosed for providing multi-media conferencing. According to one embodiment, a method for providing a multi-media conference can comprise receiving a request to participate in the conference from a first client via a signaling protocol. For example, the signaling protocol comprises Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) or another signaling protocol. The first client and a media server adapted to support the conference can be invited to join the conference via third-party call control of the signaling protocol. The method can also include assigning a conference identifier to the conference. In such a case, inviting the first client and the media server can comprise sending invitation messages to each of the first client and the media server wherein the invitation messages include the conference identifier.

According to the method for communication, a wired/wireless relay device that attempts to associate with an initial coordinator-based wireless network notifies a coordinator of information indicating that it acts as a relay device. The coordinator sends the information to wireless network devices within an appropriate coordinator-based wireless network, and each of the wireless network devices transmits data to be transmitted to a device within a different coordinator-based wireless network to the relay device. When the relay device sends the data to a relay device in a coordinator-based wireless network a destination wireless network device belongs to through a wired network, the relay device in the same coordinator-based wireless network as the destination wireless network device sends the data to the destination wireless network device.

After receiving an INVITE message from a calling party, the SIP proxy negotiates with a transcoder for getting a list of codecs of the transcoder and their address information. The SIP proxy adds the codec list of the transcoder to the received SDP description in the invite message, and sends this way modified SDP description in an INVITE message to a called party. After receiving the modified SDP, the called party selects codecs or a list of suitable codecs according to preferences in the modified SDP and its own preferences.

  • Patent number: 6278387
Abstract: An audio codec having an encoder and a decoder is disclosed. The encoder enables the compression of an audio signal for transmission or storage while the decoder receives a compressed audio signal for playback. A time scaling module within the decoder allows variation of the playback rate of the compressed audio signal. Further, no significant depreciation in the quality of pitch occurs as a result of varying the playback rate. The codec features a control for independently varying the playback rate and a module for delivering pitch compensation. The encoder utilizes a sub-band coding scheme (e.g., MPEG-1 and MPEG-2) wherein an audio signal is split into at least two frequency sub-bands for compression. Using a filter bank having two filters, for example, the audio signal is split into the frequency sub-bands. An decoder having a time scaling module is further disclosed. The time scaling module time stretches or compresses an audio signal as desired using a synchronized overlap and add (SOLA) algorithm.

  • Patent number: 6147977
Abstract: A method and apparatus that process messages within a wireless communications system based on originator priority and recipient priority is accomplished when a server (12, 52) receives a message from an originating party (50). The message includes identity of the receiving party (54), originator priority information, and message content. Upon identifying the receiving party, the server retrieves recipient priority information of the receiving party. The server then merges the originator priority information with the recipient priority information to produce a message priority. In addition, the server generates a recipient index, which identifies an address for subsequent retrieval of the message content. Next, the server provides notice of the message to the receiving party based on the message priority. The notice of the message may be sent to the receiving party's pager, cellular telephone, e-mail account, facsimile machine, wireline telephone, or answering service.

  • Patent number: 5983382
Abstract: The invention discloses techniques for providing automatic retransmission query (ARQ) functions in a communication system. A transmitter in the system applies an input data packet to a first convolutional encoder operating at a first rate to generate an inner code including multiple encoded packets. The encoded packets are interleaved and applied to a second convolutional encoder operating at a second rate which generates an outer code including a transmit packet generated from each of the encoded packets. A first transmit packet is sent to a receiver, which decodes the transmit packet in a Viterbi decoder operating at the second rate to generate a decoded version of the first transmit packet. The decoded version is inverted to provide a first provisional decoding of the input packet. If a cyclic redundancy code (CRC) check of the first provisional decoding is passed, the receiver sends an ACK signal to the transmitter and no retransmission is required.

Abstract: A multipoint video conferencing system in which the video conferencing terminals are in a daisy-chain arrangement with the head-of-chain terminal connected to the ATM network. ATM cells are relayed from the ATM network downstream to the last terminal, and from each terminal upstream to the network. Each video conference terminal has a video program input port provisioned with a unique ATM address, and a plurality of video program out ports, each provisioned with one of the video program input port addresses. ATM cells generated from each video program input port are transmitted upstream to the ATM network where they are relayed back to the head-of-chain terminal and then downstream to the last terminal. Each video conferencing terminal may also receive ATM cells having addresses that match the addresses provisioned for its video program output ports. These cells are converted to analog video programs and transmitted out the associated video output ports.

  • Patent number: 5915091
Abstract: A multimedia collaboration system that integrates separate real-time and asynchronous networks--the former for real-time audio and video, and the latter for control signals and textual, graphical and other data--in a manner that is interoperable across different computer and network operating system platforms and which closely approximates the experience of face-to-face collaboration, while liberating the participants from the limitations of time and distance. These capabilities are achieved by exploiting a variety of hardware, software and networking technologies in a manner that preserves the quality and integrity of audio/video/data and other multimedia information, even after wide area transmission, and at a significantly reduced networking cost as compared to what would be required by presently known approaches. The system architecture is readily scalable to the largest enterprise network environments.

Abstract: A distance learning system consists of a plurality of multi-cast clients of various classes and priorities with one multi-cast client as a primary multi-cast client, a multi-cast server, arbitrator and a distance learning session coordinator. The primary multi-cast client provides the default or primary Audio-Visual Material (AVM) stream. The Multi-Cast Server (MCS) setups a multi-cast over a point to multi-point connection which connects all multi-cast clients that are to take part in a particular distance learning session, along with the Primary multi-cast client. Additionally, the primary multi-cast client is connected to the MCS via a point-to-point link. The multi-cast clients and the primary multi-cast client receive an AVM material stream from the multi-cast server via the point to multi-point connection. When a multi-cast client wishes to speak, a speaking request is sent to the arbitrator, the arbitrator determines whether to grant or deny the speaking request.
