  • Patent number: 8705560
Abstract: A communication system includes base stations having an antenna arrangement per sector. Each of the antenna arrangements has an antenna element for generating an array of narrow beams covering the sector. Timeslots are simultaneously transmitted over each beam to generate successive sets of simultaneously transmitted timeslots per sector that are each split into orthogonal codes. Common overhead channels are allocated for successive sets of timeslots, which are allocated to the same subset of codes of each timeslot in the set. For successive sets of timeslots, different data is allocated to the same subset of codes of each timeslot in the set. This generates a sector-wide beam carrying the common overhead channels and a plurality of narrow beams, each carrying different data. An inter-beam handoff scheme allows the antenna arrangement to simultaneously transmits data to a user equipment located in a cusp region between adjacent beams on the adjacent beams.

Abstract: The standby time of a CDMA cell phone is extended by using two receive chains to monitor the Quick Paging Channel (QPCH) when the signal-to-noise ratio falls within a predetermined range. Monitoring the QPCH saves battery power by obviating the need to monitor the general paging message unless quick paging (PI) bits are set. The QPCH is not monitored, however, in noisy environments where PI bits are incorrectly detected causing the paging message to be needlessly monitored. Power is saved by monitoring the QPCH in noisier environments without increasing the incorrect detection rate. Incorrect detection is reduced in the predetermined range by using an additional receive chain to achieve receive diversity. Although additional power is consumed by the second receive chain in the predetermined range, the power saved by not demodulating the paging message at each slot more than compensates for the additional power consumed by the second receive chain.

Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate establishing synchronization and/or mitigating interference with a time division duplexing (TDD) access point base station in a wireless communication environment. For example, a TDD configuration can be selected for the access point base station based upon received information to control interference. By way of another example, the access point base station can be synchronized with a disparate base station based upon the received information. Moreover, the received information can relate to the disparate base station, a served user equipment (UE) (e.g., served by the access point base station, . . . ), and/or a non-served UE (e.g., served by a base station other than the access point base station, . . . ). For example, the served UE can transmit a measurement related to the disparate base station to the access point base station.

  • Patent number: 8611329
Abstract: On the mobile communication terminal 100 side, when the VOIP communication application stored in the storage unit 104 is activated in accordance with an instruction from the user (step S101), the application activation judging unit 107a judges that the VOIP communication application has been activated. Upon the judgment, the control unit 107 selects a cycle (for example, 1.152 seconds: code F10) that is shorter than 5.152 seconds, generates an EISP signal based on the selection, and transmits the generated EISP signal to the base station 200 via the transmission unit 102 (step S102). After this, upon receiving an ACK signal, the control unit 107 starts to activate the reception unit 103 at the cycle of 1.152 seconds to receive the report signal at the cycle of 1.152 seconds (step S105).

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a method and apparatus for mitigating port swapping during signal tracking. The method and apparatus generally include acquiring a first signal characteristic corresponding to a signal assigned to a first port, comparing the first signal characteristic to a second previously acquired signal characteristic, and assigning the signal to a second port if the first and second signal characteristics vary. Such a configuration mitigates port swapping without requiring signals to include identification information, thereby enabling assignment of signals corresponding to any format or source.

  • Patent number: 8582548
Abstract: Techniques for transmitting data using single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) multiplexing schemes are described. In one aspect, data is sent on sets of adjacent subbands that are offset from one another to achieve frequency diversity. A terminal may be assigned a set of N adjacent subbands that is offset by less than N (e.g., N/2) subbands from another set of N adjacent subbands assigned to another terminal and would then observe interference on only subbands that overlap. In another aspect, a multi-carrier transmission symbol is generated with multi-carrier SC-FDMA. Multiple waveforms carrying modulation symbols in the time domain on multiple sets of subbands are generated. The multiple waveforms are pre-processed (e.g., cyclically delayed by different amounts) to obtain pre-processed waveforms, which are combined (e.g., added) to obtain a composite waveform. A cyclic prefix is appended to the composite waveform to generate the multi-carrier transmission symbol.

  • Patent number: 8582596
Abstract: Techniques for transmitting data in a wireless communication system are described. Physical channels to be sent in a super-frame are identified and allocated time slots in the super-frame. The coding and modulation for each physical channel are selected based on its capacity. The data for each physical channel is selectively encoded based on an outer code rate, e.g., for a Reed-Solomon code, and further encoded based on an inner code rate, e.g., for a Turbo code. The encoded data for each physical channel is mapped to modulation symbols based on a selected modulation scheme. The modulation symbols for each physical channel are further processed (e.g., OFDM modulated) and multiplexed onto the time slots allocated to the physical channel. Data to be sent using another radio technology (e.g., W-CDMA) is also processed and multiplexed onto time slots allocated for this radio technology.

Abstract: The present invention provides a way of placing a physical layer device into a standby mode. After a link is established between multiple devices, a determination is made whether the device has data to transmit or whether a standby request was received from a link partner. If a standby request was received or the device has no data to transmit, standby mode is entered. In standby mode, unneeded circuitry is powered down. A transmitter in a channel and a receive path in a separate channel remain powered. While operating in standby mode, the PHY layer continuously transmits a standby code on the one or more channels that are not powered down. Standby mode is discontinued when a transceiver has data to transmit or when energy is detected on the powered down channels. Standby mode is also discontinued when no standby code is received, indicating a disconnect between devices.

  • Patent number: 8570987
Abstract: A WiMAX based system having a base station which communicates to a plurality of consumer premises equipment (CPE) is disclosed. The base station obtains and stores information corresponding to the MAC addresses of each CPE. Messages from one CPE can be sent to the base station and then sent to another CPE using the MAC address stored in the base station. Each CPE may originate an uplink multicast message for transmission to more than one CPE. When the base station receives the uplink multicast message, it broadcasts the multicast message to all of the CPEs identified in the multicast message including the originating CPE. When the originating CPE recognizes the multicast message as a message it originated, the originating CPE drops the multicast message. The CPEs may be grouped into virtual local area networks (VLANs) using group identifiers which permit multicast messages to be transmitted to specific groups of CPEs.
