  • Patent number: 8688162
Abstract: A method and system for reducing latency by anticipating responsive data communications is described. When the user of a first mobile station receives a message sent from a second mobile station, the user of the first mobile station may responsively reply. If, before the reply is sent, the second mobile station releases its network radio link and goes dormant, the reply may be delayed as the radio link is set up again after the reply is sent. To reduce this latency, the first mobile station may monitor its user's actions and, upon an indication that the user intends to soon reply to the earlier received message, the first mobile station may send a signal into the network which causes the second mobile station to maintain its radio link or to set up a new radio link if it has gone dormant.

  • Patent number: 8670423
Abstract: The present invention provides a system (600), device (500) and method (400) for automatic partner selection in an existing Cooperative MAC (CMAC) protocol, which uses the Ready-to-Send (RTS), Clear-to-Send (CTS) and Partner-Clear-to-Send (PCTS) handshaking to establish cooperation. The present invention enables a “best” partner/relay (500.R.k) who is also willing to cooperate to relay information to a destination (500.D.J) for the transmitting device (i.e., the source), without the source (500.S.i) making a decision on partner selection. That is, the present invention provides a new mechanism by which the best partner/relay (500.R.k) that is also willing to cooperate will “step in” automatically without the source's involvement in selection of the partner/relay (500.R.k). This mechanism is contention-based and the partner is “selected” using local information only in a fully distributed manner.

  • Patent number: 8639867
Abstract: A method for bus arbitration is for use when working with multi-carrier modulation methods. Each user on a bus is assigned a unique address which identifies the user and which is transmitted upon each initiation of communication. The address is represented as a sequence of binary numerals, the number of bits of the binary numerals being equal to the number of carriers used in the multi-carrier modulation method. This sequence of binary numerals is transmitted successively for the arbitration via the multi-carrier modulation method, a user being eliminated from the arbitration when a further user at the same time has transmitted a binary numeral having higher priority. The transmission of the binary numeral may be repeated if the arbitration of the numeral does not lead to a result in one step. The method for bus arbitration may be used advantageously in a system for contactless energy supply. A redundant sending of phase-shifted signals reduces the failure rate because of random destructive interference.

  • Patent number: 8457086
Abstract: In one example, an Edge Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (EQAM) communicates EQAM information to a Modular Cable Modem Termination System (M-CMTS) core using a routing protocol that is configured on a packet switched network coupling the EQAM to the M-CMTS core. The EQAM generates a routing message according to the routing protocol and inserts EQAM information, such as a description of a modulated channel extending from the EQAM, the service-group information, etc, into the routing message. The EQAM then floods the EQAM information over at least portions of a routing domain by transmitting the routing message to an adjacent intermediary device.

  • Patent number: 8451756
Abstract: Subject matter disclosed herein relates to random linear network coding schemes for reliable communications for time division duplexing channels. In at least one embodiment, a transmitter node transmits M data packets through a half-duplex link using random linear network coding. The transmitter node transmits coded packets back-to-back through the link before stopping to wait for an acknowledgement (ACK) packet. An optimal number of coded packets Ni to be transmitted in a subsequent transmission may then be determined based, at least in part, on a number of degrees of freedom (DOFs) a receiving node needs to decode the M information packets from received coded packets.

  • Patent number: 8406210
Abstract: An apparatus and method for allocating Radio Network Temporary Identifiers (RNTIs) for random access in a mobile communication system are provided. An Evolved Node B (ENB) determines the number of RNTIs allocated to at least one User Equipment (UE) that transmitted a random access preamble, determines an average number of random access preambles received during a Transmission Time Interval (TTI), and sets a timer based on the number of allocated RNTIs and the average number of random access preambles. If a cell identifier corresponding to a first UE is not received from an upper layer before expiration of the timer, the ENB releases the RNTI allocated to the first UE, and allocates the released RNTI to a second UE different from the first UE.

  • Patent number: 8391259
Abstract: A protocol for collision avoidance in inter and intra basic service set broadcast/multicast communication in a wireless network is disclosed. An access point reserves a broadcast transmission time and conveys that reservation to each of its associated stations. Using a beacon or an action frame, the transmission reservation time is sent to all stations and other neighboring access points within range of the primary access point. Upon receiving the broadcast transmission time reservation, each station associated with the reserving access point and any neighboring access points set their network allocation vector thus preventing frame transmission or reception during the now reserved transmission time.
