Mast Patents (Class 373/98)
  • Patent number: 8837552
Abstract: A sealing device is arranged around a rod electrode extending vertically through an aperture made in the ceiling of an arc furnace and being vertically movable inside the furnace to prevent the access of gases from the furnace through the aperture to the atmosphere, and on the other hand to prevent air from flowing from the atmosphere into the furnace. The sealing device comprises a gas distribution chamber provided with an inlet channel for feeding essentially passive gas, such as nitrogen or air, into the gas distribution chamber. The sealing device also includes a slit nozzle encasing the electrode, through which nozzle a gas jet is arranged to be discharged from the gas distribution chamber towards the electrode in a direction that is at an angle with respect to the horizontal plane and has a slightly upwards inclined orientation, and that is, with respect to the furnace interior, pointed outwardly, so that the sealing is carried out owing to the effect of the created stagnation pressure.

  • Patent number: 5146469
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and a means for continuous production of elongated carbon bodies having a constant or substantially constant cross-section where a casing filled with unbaked paste consisting of carbon and a carbon containing binder is continuously baked to a solid carbon body by heating by means of direct electric current. The first terminal of the direct current source is being slidably connected to the casing through a plurality of vertical ribs extending radially outwards from the casing, said ribs being made from a current conducting material, and the second terminal of the direct current source being connected to the baked part of the carbon body or to a bottom contact in a smelting furnace in which the carbon body is consumed. The casing containing the carbon containing paste is continuously or substantially continuously moved in axial direction by means of slipping- and holding means.

  • Patent number: 4964114
Abstract: This invention relates to an electrode positioning mechanism of an electric, electric arc or reduction furnace, in particular for smelting steel, with a guide column, having a mast arm to hold the electrode and guided in a guide frame by front and lateral guide rollers, which are located in a nest, and which can be moved vertically, whereby there are mechanical damping elements to damp mechanical vibrations. To create an electrode positioning mechanism which uses simple means to achieve a vibrational isolation of the individual components of the electrode positioning mechanism, and which reduces the breakage of electrodes in comparison to the devices of the prior art which use complex damping means, the invention proposes that the damping elements 14 be located between the front and lateral guide rollers 6 and the guide frame 7.

  • Patent number: 4674102
Abstract: For the purposes of charging an electric arc furnace the cover (3) of the furnace is lifted somewhat and, being held by a cover carrier mechanism (10, 11), pivoted to the side. The cover carrier mechanism (10, 11) is connected to a portal structure (13) which is rotatable about a vertical axis. At the same time horizontal electrode support arms (5, 6, 7), with the electrodes secured to the free ends thereof, are pivoted to the side. The electrode support arms are secured to vertically displaceable lift columns (19, 20, 21). The lift columns are arranged in one plane and have roller guides (15a, 15b; 16a, 16b) which are disposed in two horizontal planes. The rollers of each pair (15a, 15b . . . ) are so inclined that their axes of rotation include an angle of between 90.degree. and 160.degree.. In that way moments about vertical axes upon pivotal movement of the arrangement and in operation of the furnace can be carried.

  • Patent number: 4473903
Abstract: Apparatus for positioning an arc furnace electrode which includes a verticle tubular electrode mast which is both horizontally and vertically movable. Inside the mast is a hydraulic cylinder which has a double-acting piston. When the mast is in its uppermost position it may be locked whereby hydraulic fluid is removed from above the piston. Fluid is then introduced below the piston to raise it and the piston rod to a level above the furnace platform such that the mast can be moved horizontally over the platform.

  • Patent number: 4471487
Abstract: To avoid loss of temperature of a melt contained in casting ladles in a continuous casting operation, an independently rotatable platform adapted to receive a heating device is disposed on a slewing column of a slewing tower for ladles. The heating device is similar to that of an arc melting furnace and comprises a vertically adjustable electrode holder of outrigger configuration whose guide column is arranged eccentrically on the platform so that a current carrying cable can be installed to extend centrally through the platform and through the slewing column. The cables are secured by a clamping plate at a perpendicular distance from the platform, such that the electrode holder, as seen from the casting position, can pivot in both pivoting directions through approximately 180.degree., without the cable tearing as a result of twisting.

  • Patent number: 4422173
Abstract: A snubber device for preventing the uncontrolled fall of a column supporting an electrode and crosshead structure in an electric arc furnace upon failure of the hoisting mechanism or cable. Clamp plates containing serrated surfaces are positioned on either side of the electrode column and are joined by a number of parallel link arms to form a pantograph-like structure. A linkage is attached to the cable deadend which causes the plates to move in vertical relationship to each other, thereby causing a horizontal displacement of the plates and clamping the column between them to prevent downward movement. The column snubber is provided with a number of flanged rollers which ride on the outer surface of the column to permit rolling movement between the snubber and column. When the clamp plates are clamping the column, the rollers move out of contact with the outer surface. The column snubber automatically adjusts for wear in the electrode column assembly.
