  • Patent number: 10287548
Abstract: The present approach relates to the design and use of a functionally closed bioreactor designed to immobilize, culture, and mature tissue on a loading platform. The bioreactor may be equipped with sensors for tissue monitoring which in conjunction with stiffness data can provide closed-loop control of tissue maturation. Based on a relationship between cartilage stiffness and tissue maturity, measurements of stiffness can be acquired and used as a surrogate for cartilage maturity without the need for destructive tests.

  • Patent number: 9366591
Abstract: An apparatus for determining a magnitude of a compressive load applied to a piston including a compliant film disposed between first and second elements is provided. The apparatus includes a first part movable with the first element in a movement direction along which the magnitude of the compressive load is to be determined, a second part movable with the second element in the movement direction and a sensor to measure a distance between the first and second parts in the movement direction, the measured distance being related to a deformation of the compliant film as the compressive load is applied.

  • Patent number: 9046452
Abstract: A device for locating a first natural bend of an arrow shaft preferably includes a support base, two arrow supports, a support tower and a pressure roller unit. The support base includes first and second tracks. The two arrow supports are slidably retained in the first track. Each arrow support includes a pair of bearing wheels for retaining an arrow shaft. The support tower includes a tower base and a tower pedestal. The tower base is slidably retained in the first and second tracks. The pressure roller unit includes a pressure base and two bearing wheels. The pressure base is slidably retained vertically relative to the tower pedestal. The two bearing wheels are sized to receive the arrow shaft. The pressure roller unit is lowered on to the arrow shaft. The arrow shaft is rotated with a forefinger and a thumb to determine the location of a valley.

  • Patent number: 8495919
Abstract: A test apparatus and method for determining at least one characteristic of a test specimen. An exemplary test specimen is a shape memory metal alloy and an exemplary characteristic is a transformation temperature of the shape memory metal alloy. The test apparatus may include a chiller unit including a tank containing a chilling medium, such as isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol, which holds a removable fixture tray that can accommodate up to ten specimens, or more. The fixture tray holds the test specimens in an initial deformed condition, and the cooling medium may be gradually heated to induce transformation of the specimens. The test apparatus may include a vision-based optical system which includes a camera that tracks the specimens within its field of view.

  • Patent number: 8033237
Abstract: The present invention utilizes the unique shape recovery properties of shape memory materials, especially shape memory polymers, to provide an inexpensive and easily identified method of determining when a product has been exposed to environmental conditions that would make it likely that the product has expired or is unfit for use. By allowing the shape memory material to alter its shape from a deformed shape to a memory shape in response to exposure to environmental conditions while attached to a visual indication device a viewer can easily determine if a product has expired.

  • Patent number: 7628116
Abstract: A temperature sensing device includes two or more strips, wherein each of the two or more strips comprises a shape memory polymer adapted to undergo a change in a modulus of elasticity at a thermal transition temperature. A method comprises contacting two or more strips with an item, wherein each strip comprises a shape memory polymer adapted to undergo a change in a modulus of elasticity at a thermal transition temperature; equilibrating the two or more strips with the item; and determining a temperature range of the item by observing whether any of the two or more strips underwent a decrease in stiffness and/or increase in flexibility caused by the change in the modulus of elasticity of the shape memory polymer.

  • Patent number: 5936165
Abstract: A system for simultaneously measuring strains in a test member includes spatial-position members which are coupled to different portions of the test member and first and second displacement sensors which are spaced apart by a sensor space and coupled to the spatial-position members. Linear and bending deformations of the test member are calculated as functions of the responses of the displacement sensors and of the sensor space.

  • Patent number: 4850715
Abstract: A test specimen is provided, that is constructed of dual materials, which are preferably metallic materials and which are more preferably an austenitic iron alloy and a ferritic iron alloy. The specimen is generally constructed as a rectangular configuration, with two principal legs, connected together by substantially rigid connections at their ends, with the legs being of the different materials, such that, when the specimen is subjected to heat, one leg will expand linearly an amount greater than the other leg allowing the imposition of bending stress, whereby a given leg will experience both tension and compression. Observation may then be made, by a microscopic examination or otherwise, of those surfaces that are adjacent the portions of the legs that experience most of the tension and compression, such that the effects of temperature on the materials may be observed and recorded.

  • Patent number: 4653323
Abstract: An apparatus for moving an object in an isolated environment may be employed as a high pressure and temperature facility for testing steam generator tubes. A tube to be tested extends through an opening in a plate that is mounted in a test vessel. The vessel is partially filled with water having selected contaminants, and heated water under high pressure is circulated through the tube to raise the temperature and pressure within the vessel. A lever arm having an inner end and an outer end extends through an opening in the test vessel. A vibration-coupler connects the inner end of the arm to the tube under test, and a fulcrum-former operationally connects an intermediate portion of the arm to the test vessel. The outer end of the lever arm is connected to a plug element which is shaken, so that the arm pivots about a fixed point at the fulcrum-former and the vibration-coupler moves the tube under test with respect to the plate.
