  • Patent number: 8009761
Abstract: A “unified” modulator for multiple modulation schemes (e.g., GMSK and 8PSK) is described. The waveform for each modulation scheme is generated based on a set of one or more pulse shaping functions. The waveforms for all supported modulation schemes may be generated based on a composite set of all the different pulse shaping functions. The unified modulator includes a filter for each pulse shaping function in the composite set. To generate the waveform for a selected modulation scheme, the set of one or more filters for this modulation scheme is enabled and all other filters are disabled. The outputs from all enabled filters are summed to generate a modulator output. When switching between modulation schemes, a smooth transition may be obtained by (1) providing a suitable data pattern for each filter to be enabled or disabled and (2) generating symbols for the new modulation scheme with an appropriate initial phase.

Abstract: A two stage mixer is configured to reduce the power levels of out of band spurious output signals or spurs, such as the leakage from the second stage mixer by way of phase modulation power spreading. The local oscillator signal applied to first mixer stage is phase modulated while the local oscillator signal applied to the second mixer stage is inverse modulated. As such, a problematic spur, such as leakage from the local oscillator applied to the second mixer stage is spread so that the power levels of the spur are distributed a wider bandwidth instead of concentrating the power levels at single frequencies, thus reducing the power level at any single frequency. By utilizing phase modulation, the need for relatively complex and expensive filters is eliminated.

  • Patent number: 7860188
Abstract: A digital modulator in a radio transmitter includes circuitry for switching between Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK) and Phase-Shift Keying (PSK) while maintaining spectral mask requirements. The digital modulator of the present invention includes both GMSK and PSK symbol mappers that produce PSK in-phase and quadrature symbols and GMSK symbols, respectively, to a pulse shaping block. Based on opposite phases of a modulation control signal, the symbol mappers produce either modulated data or a steam of logic zeros to the pulse shaping block. The pulse shaping block filters the received data and multiplexes the data so that each modulated data stream receives non-zero data during a guard time to avoid abrupt changes in the modulated signal that would violate the spectral mask requirements.

Accordingly, complex numbers are mapped to the constellation map, enabling a fine granularity of constellation points. Abstract: A method for generating a data block for transmission using a continuous phase modulation scheme is disclosed. In one aspect, the method includes inserting payload data in the data block, the payload data having a plurality of payload symbols, each involving an state change in a continuous phase modulation waveform generated from the data block in one of two opposite directions. It may include inserting state compensation data in the data block for cancelling out the state changes, such that the waveform has an end state at the end of the data block equal to a begin state at the beginning of the data block. The state compensation data is determined by determining from the state changes an overall state change caused by the payload data over the waveform and by selecting a set of compensation symbols for the state compensation data on the basis of the overall state change.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for framing messages in a data streams encoded with redundant information for transmission and recovering the messages at a receiver. The transmission method accepts an energy waveform representing N words at a first bit rate, encoded with redundant information, where each word includes P number of bits. The N words are transformed, creating N transcoded words, where each transcoded word includes Q number of bits, and where Q<P. The N transcoded words are mapped into M lanes in a buffer memory, where M>1 and each lane receives a frame of N/M transcoded words. A frame alignment marker is generated and mapped into each frame. Each frame is represented as an energy waveform that is transmitted on a corresponding physical lane at the first bit rate divided by M.

  • Patent number: 7835459
Abstract: One embodiment comprises a transmitter precoder operating on an input signal to produce an output signal for modulation. The output signal is transmitted using a constellation with a constellation density. The transmitter precoder comprises scaler logic, precoder logic and selection logic. The scaler logic scales the input signal to maintain constant power on the input signal independent of the constellation density. The precoder logic precodes the scaled signal to produce a dither signal limited to a range of values. The range is inversely proportional to the constellation density. The selection logic is operable in two states. In the first state, the selection logic combines the scaled signal with the dither signal to produce the output signal. In the second state, the selection provides the scaled signal as the output signal.
