  • Patent number: 7106833
Abstract: An automatic system for the provisioning, deployment and management of digital subscriber lines (DSL) in a telephone network uses data on loop composition, electromagnetic interference and crosstalk between lines to optimize the performance and correct problems with one or more symmetric and or asymmetric digital subscriber lines in a cable. The system optimizes DSL lines on an individual basis using measurements and data. The optimal transmit power spectral density (PSD) for each DSL can be found in an iterative manner. Starting each DSL with some predetermined starting parameter, the transmit PSD of each DSL is optimized in round-robin fashion. The crosstalk into a given DSL is calculated as the power sum of all transmissions passed through their measured crosstalk couplings. An asymmetric DSL has its transmit PSD optimized by using the “waterfilling” technique.

  • Patent number: 6856683
Abstract: A method for reducing noise from a non-linear device, such as a telephone, that shares a customer loop with a splitterless Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line modem. The non-linearity of the device can cause some of the upstream signal to bleed into the downstream signal band. The modem examines the downstream band when it is transmitting fast retrain signals. By comparing the power in the band to a previous value when the modem transmitted upstream at a higher power level, the modem may determine whether to cut back its transmitted power to lessen the noise in the downstream band. In this manner, the method may allow optimal downstream data transfer regardless of what non-linear device shares the customer loop with the ADSL modem.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for debugging xDSL line cards. An electrical connection is established by means of a test bus, between a line port to be tested and a testing line port which can be operated in the upstream and downstream direction with the same bandwidth. The testing line port is charged with a software which simulates a subscriber-side modem, and the successful establishment of a connection between the line ports represents a function confirmation for the line port to be tested.

Abstract: A simple means is provided to test the cross connect wiring of a communications system which uses a POTS splitter to separate broadband and narrow band signals. A suitable frequency test signal such as 1 KHz tone is fed at sufficient amplitude to the broadband port of the POTS splitter, so that even after attenuation by both the POTS splitter capacitance and inductance filters, it is detectable by suitably sensitive detectors connected to the narrow band port of the POTS splitter. The test signal may be applied intermittently to enable its detection even in low signal to noise situations.

Abstract: A single ended, frequency domain reflectometry signal processing based scheme measures loop loss of a telecommunications wireline. A distortion-corrected, normalized data array is differentially combined with an associated set of wireline noise spectrum values. The resulting noise margin data is processed by a Shannon Theorem operator, to produce a set of N frequency bins, each containing the number of bits which the link will support for a respective tone. The bit contents of the bins represent a composite bit rate that is available for use for ADSL signalling.

Abstract: The present invention provides systems and methods for pseudo-random signal generation in a multi-carrier communications system. In embodiments, a transmitter includes a pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS) generator and Medley signal generator. The PRBS generator can operate in at least one of the following modes: a parameter selection mode, a scrambler mode, and/or a combination mode. The Medley signal generator receives an output bit sequence from the PRBS generator. The Medley signal generator then generates a Medley signal which includes a set of Medley tones encoded based on the output bit sequence from the PRBS generator. The Medley signal is then sent over channels of a multi-carrier communication system such as an ADSL system.

Abstract: A system and method for verifying the integrity of a DSL circuit on a shared telephone line. The invention uses the amplitude modulation principles to overcome the difficulty associated with a blocking capacitor that isolates a DSLAM on the DSL circuit from the rest of the shared telephone line. A transmitter of the invention mixes a high frequency carrier signal and a low frequency audio signal to produce an amplitude-modulated test signal. The amplitude modulated signal is supplied to the telephone line at a main distributing frame side of the blocking capacitor and is detected by a receiver at the DSLAM side of the blocking capacitor.

  • Patent number: 6782096
Abstract: A subscriber line driver (SLD) is provided for the continuous and automatic transformation of the characteristics of a communication system signal so that the signal conforms to a power spectral distribution (PSD) standard. The signal is transformed by the SLD which may increase (amplify) portions of the signal to a predefined specification, decrease (attenuate) portions of the signal to a predefined specification, and/or frequency modulate or filter the transmit signal frequencies to fit within the communication channel frequency bandwidth as defined by a predefined frequency band. After modification by the SLD, the transformed communication signal is injected (transmitted) into a communication transmission line. An SLD device can be employed in a variety of communication systems such as a public telephony system, a private branch exchange (PBX), a coaxial cable system, a fiber optic system, a microwave system, a radio communication system or the like.

Abstract: An upstream transceiver, coupled to an upstream end of a long haul, single digital subscriber loop of an extended range asymmetrical digital subscriber line communication system, ‘spoofs’ a (co-located) digital subscriber line access multiplexer to reduce its downstream data rate over a short haul loop to the upstream transceiver. The reduced downstream data rate is compatible with the data rate that can be supported by the long haul loop and also accommodates an auxiliary (64K) POTS channel thereover. The reduced data rate may be derived by preliminary signal quality measurements upon the long communication loop conducted between the upstream transceiver and a downstream transceiver coupled to a remote end of the long haul loop.

Abstract: A home network controller provides a user-visible indication of the integrity of a physical connection to a home network. The home network controller periodically checks an interrupt status register for receipt of a physical-layer packet. Receipt of a physical-layer packet serves as a proxy for a functional physical connection, and non-receipt of a packet serves as a proxy for a non-functional physical connection. To avoid race conditions, the controller will indicate failure of a previously functional physical connection if no packet was received during the period but a packet was transmitted during the period and a packet was transmitted during the immediately previous period. A heartbeat signal avoids deadlocks by transmitting a packet if the interrupt status register indicates no packets were received or transmitted during the period.

Abstract: A system for testing a communication network includes a test system and a cross-connect system. The test system generates a plurality of independent low data rate test signals with first data rates. The test system combines the independent low data rate test signals to generate a high data rate test signal. The test system then transmits the high data rate test signal from the test system to a shared test port. The cross-connect system transfers the high data rate test signal to a cross-connect matrix that connects the independent low data rate test signals to the communication network. The cross-connect system then receives the independent low data rate test signals from the communication network into the shared test port. The cross-connect system transmits the high data rate test signal from the shared test port to the test system. The test system separates the high data rate test signal into the independent low data rate test signals.
