  • Patent number: 8102989
Abstract: Gateways facilitate communication of voice traffic from a calling party to a called party over a packet network. To establish a communication session, an originating gateway sends one or more initial call control messages using overlap signaling to a destination gateway. The destination gateway may be unable to establish the communication session using overlap signaling. The destination gateway signals the originating gateway, such as by indicating that the communication session could not be established because of an incomplete or invalid destination address. The originating gateway then attempts to establish the communication session using en bloc signaling. In this way, an attempt that fails due to the use of overlap signaling is retried using en bloc signaling.

  • Patent number: 6275578
Abstract: A method of detecting and recovering from an out-of-band signaling failure in a telecommunications network involves the reprogramming of switching centers to utilize existent inband signaling capabilities to temporarily replace the failed out-of-band capability. A processor of an originating switching center recognizes the loss of out-of-band signaling capability, determines impacted trunks and switches to in-band signaling from out-of-band signaling. In an alternative embodiment, the switch may use maintenance data bits of impacted trunks to initiate a call. The terminating switching center is programmed to receive and recognize the change in bit value of the signaling data and initiates well known processes to seize the trunk in memory, check continuity and receive dialed number data, preferably in the form of tones, over the seized trunk. The terminal switching center for the trunk then attempts to complete the call in accordance with the received dialed number data.

  • Patent number: 5940467
Abstract: Quality requirements on a counter may set a limit to the highest frequency that can be applied to the counter. This will also limit the resolution. A counter is provided including a generator for generating, in response to a first clock frequency, M second clock signals phase shifted with respect to each other and of a second frequency lower than the first frequency, and M secondary counters, each one responsive to a respective one of the M second clock signals for generating a secondary counter signal. The second frequency is adapted to work well in the technology available for realizing the secondary counters, with consideration taken to quality requirements. Furthermore, the counter included a summing circuit responsive to the secondary counter signals for generating the resulting counter signals by adding the secondary counter signals such that the counter signal has the same number of bits and the same significance as the secondary counter signals.

  • Patent number: 5937343
Abstract: A method and system of the present invention updates a replicated database of a telecommunications network system. A call transport system forwards calls from a local telephone station to a destination. A signaling system is operatively connected to the call transport system and includes primary site databases containing customer records for call routing and other signaling functions and at least one secondary site database containing the customer records of the primary site database. Both primary and secondary site databases maintain multiple versions of the same customer record so that queries of a call can use a version number to access the corresponding version of the record in the same database for consistent routing and other signaling information. A customer record is updated in the primary site database and that information is transmitted through the signaling network to the secondary site database containing the replicated version of the record.

  • Patent number: 5577117
Abstract: In methods and apparatus for estimating the frequency response of telecommunications channels, signals carried on the channels are divided into pluralities of signal segments of limited duration, unvoiced signal segments are identified, and spectral components of the unvoiced signal segments are measured. The measured spectral components may be integrated over time to derive time-averaged measurements of the spectral components. The time-averaged measurements may be compared to corresponding components of expected unvoiced signal spectra to improve the accuracy of the frequency response estimates. Filters may be inserted in the channels to adjust the frequency responses, the filters having filter characteristics selected in response to the measured spectral components. The methods and apparatus can be used to compensate for poor bass frequency response in voice channels.

  • Patent number: 5533111
Abstract: Access (or egress) charges payable by an IXC to a LEC, and payable by the subscriber to the LEC for originating or terminating calls and for associated vertical call control features, are reduced or eliminated by providing a virtual piped collection that "bypasses" and thus does not require the involvement of, a local service provider. The virtual piped connection exists between a call control platform (CCP) in the IXC network, and specialized customer premises equipment (CPE) located m the subscriber location. The specialized CPE is arranged to provide call control functions using normal out-of-band signaling in a conventional manner, and, after an initial call is conventionally set up to the CCP, to provide the same functions using specialized in-band signaling. A complementary signaling and control capability is provided in the CCP.

  • Patent number: 5402479
Abstract: An office interface unit (OIU) transfers data and signaling between a telephone local exchange and distribution lines. Information from the telephone local exchange is contained in repetitive frames containing signaling time slots which each contain two distinct nibbles of information. The OIU translates each local exchange signaling channel into first and second internal signaling channels, each internal signaling channel containing information representative of one signaling nibble therein. This simplifies DSO time slot interchange in the OIU. In addition, each internal signaling channel is provided with at least one additional significant signaling bit thereby providing additional signaling states so that the OIU equipment can account for multiple types of telephone local exchange equipment easily.

  • Patent number: 5259027
Abstract: A switched digital circuit is used to restore a failed dedicated digital circuit to a remote station in conjunction with reconfiguration of the network's multipoint junction units (MJU). A circuit is established over the public switched digital network from the customer's central location to a remote station requiring restoral. The remote station is then connected back to the dedicated multipoint circuit, at the telephone company central office facilities, by way of digital cross connects and MJUs that perform the digital bridging. The switched digital access line, from the customer central location to the telephone company facilities is then available for use in establishing switched connections to the other remote stations. The process is sequentially repeated for each dedicated digital circuit to a remote station to be restored, thus conserving hardware required at the customer premises and minimizing the number of dial up switched digital access lines needed at the customers central location.

Abstract: A digital FSK trunk dialing converter including M and E lead control is disclosed. The dialing converter further includes an FSK detector which is responsive to consecutive half period intervals of a received FSK signal, and a digital signal-to-noise (S/N) detector or estimator which operates to inhibit or keep the E-wire signal lead deactivated in the presence of noise signals which are received from the communications link in absence of acceptable FSK signals. The FSK detector is comprised of two digital circuits which generate pulses indicative of whether the received FSK signal is greater or less than the FSK center frequency. The pulses are integrated and used to trigger a flip-flop which provides a demodulated digital FSK output indicative of a received high or low FSK analog frequency. An E-wire control signal is generated in the receive logic circuitry in response to the demodulated FSK output.

Abstract: An improved DX circuit may be connected to signaling and reference leads of a DX signaling link, without need to balance the internal impedance of the DX circuit against that of the external DX signaling link. The DX circuit senses the magnitude and direction of current flow on the leads, and operates on the principle that when a near end signaling circuit is on-hook, a positive current flow indicates that a far end signaling circuit is off-hook and a current flow of zero indicates that it is on-hook, while if the near end signaling circuit is off-hook, a negative current flow indicates that the far end signaling circuit is on-hook and a current flow of zero indicates that it is off-hook. The arrangement allows the DX circuit to properly function irrespective of the resistive load presented by the DX signaling link.
