  • Patent number: 8385514
Abstract: Communication networks and associated methods are disclosed that provide an advertisement or other type of informational message to a calling party before providing ringback tones. A communication network described herein receives a call from the calling party to the called party, and temporarily interrupts call processing for the call. The communication network then selects an advertisement for the call, and initiates delivery of the advertisement to the calling party. After the advertisement is delivered to the calling party, the communication network resumes call processing for the call. In resuming call processing, the communication network provides ringback tones to the calling party and attempts to connect the call to the called party.

  • Patent number: 7006616
Abstract: In accordance with the principles of the present invention, an audio-conference bridging system and method are provided. The present invention discards the traditional notion of a single mixing function for a conference. Instead, the novel, flexible design of the present invention provides a separate mixing function for each participant in the conference. This new architecture is described generally herein as “EdgePoint mixing.” EdgePoint mixing overcomes limitations of traditional conferencing systems by providing each participant control over his/her conference experience. EdgePoint mixing also allows, when desired, the simulation of a “real-life” conference by permitting each participant to receive a distinctly mixed audio signal from the conference depending on the speaker's “position” within a virtual conference world. The present invention also preferably accommodates participants of different qualities of service.

  • Patent number: 6321098
Abstract: A wireless communication device provides streamlined access to recording functions that allow a user to readily record information from a called directory information service provider or other predetermined number. Directory service provider numbers and other predetermined numbers are stored in the system and compared with a user selected destination telephone number. If a match is detected, the system display automatically enables a recording function or prompts the user to manually activate the recording function to permit the user to manually record information obtained from the directory information service provider. Alternatively, the information may be automatically transferred directly into the system without user intervention through a communication link using a formatted data exchange. The system includes options for editing the recorded information, permanently storing the recorded information, and completing a call to the telephone number provided by the service.

  • Patent number: 6111937
Abstract: This invention is characterized by providing an apparatus for automatically discriminating service users which can prevent troubles from occurring between the service provider and users because of difference in language. When the service provider has a call from a user, the service provider makes an announcement to the user to request the voicing of a specific keyword. If an answer by the keyword is made from the user, it is determined whether or not it is an answer by the correct keyword. If correct, the call is connected to the service provider. If not correct, how to use the service is announced in another language. Then, the line is disconnected. As a result, a user who is weak in the language used by the service provider can be prevented from being connected to the service provider.

  • Patent number: 5117454
Abstract: An exchange having a display apparatus for displaying the states of a plurality of subscriber terminals accommodated therein. The display apparatus includes a display board having n indicator-keys, each for displaying the state of a subscriber terminal and an indication board having m indicator-keys, each for selectively indicating the states of n groups of subscriber terminals so that the states of a total of n.times.m subscriber terminals are displayed. Under control of the exchange, the display apparatus displays an incoming call and a recall terminated at an attendant console by lighting up the indicator-keys and flickering the indicator keys on and off, respectively. When an indicator-key which is displaying an incoming call or a recall is pressed, the subscriber terminal and the station line concerned are connected.

  • Patent number: 4972454
Abstract: A radio telephone apparatus comprising a main station connected to a wire telephone line and having a subsidiary telephone set, and a radio telephone set connected with the main station via a radio link, wherein the radio telephone set effectively or ineffectively controls a function of releasing the hold state by the off-hook operation of the subsidiary telephone set. By the operation of the radio telephone set, telephone communication can be switched between a self-hold state and a complete hold state. The self-hold state can be released only by the radio telephone set while the complete state hold can be released by any one of the radio telephone set and the subsidiary telephone set. In the complete hold state, the radio link between the main station and the radio telephone set is disconnected. If the complete hold state is released by the radio telephone set, the radio link is again established between the main station and the radio telephone set.

  • Patent number: 4876711
Abstract: An off-site remote telephone service system is connected in series with subscribers to the system and the associated central telephone office for providing to each of the subscribers additional telephone services. The telephone service system is connected in series between the subscribers and the main frame distribution mechanism of the central telephone office. In addition to the wires connecting the telephone service system in the series connection, the system also has at least one independent telephone line for placement of calls, which telephone line extends to the central office. All of these telephone lines are connected to a control switching mechanism of the telephone service system. The control switching mechanism includes a bridging mechanism for coupling a subscriber telephone line either to a continuation of the subscriber telephone line or to one of the independent telephone lines of the system for placement and receipt of calls for enabling normal service by the subscriber.

  • Patent number: 4802209
Abstract: The present invention discloses a switching system including an exchange coupled to a plurality of telephone lines, a plurality of telephone sets, and an attendant console. When the exchange receives a paging request of an incoming telephone call from the attendant console, it determines one of a plurality of predetermined answer codes and causes the attendant console to display the determined answer code data. Then the exchange makes a speed path between the incoming telephone call and the telephone set, when the answer code data is dialed at the telephone set after the call and answer code data are announced.

  • Patent number: 4744103
Abstract: A multi-link communication system includes a number of stations and interconnecting audio links under the control of a central computer. Each station is addressable by the computer for connecting selected stations to a selected audio link for establishing audio communication between stations. Each station has at least one corresponding access circuit for establishing an audio connection to a selected or preassigned link, and the connection is maintained by a corresponding memory circuit that is addressable by the computer. A group of output lines from the computer are used as select inputs to an analog multiplexer connecting a bidirectional control line to the selected access circuit for connecting or disconnecting the corresponding station and also for receiving connect or disconnect requests from the corresponding station. In a particular embodiment, the stations include multi-link dial and dialless telephones, single-link dialless telephones, and intercom speakers in an automatic private branch exchange.

  • Patent number: 4731824
Abstract: The flashing light, which is used by automatic telephone call distributing equipment to indicate that incoming calls have backed up and are awaiting service, generates voltage signals the frequency of which increases with the increase in the number of calls awaiting service. The voltage signals control several relays energized one at a time and successively as the signal frequency increases, and one such relay causes the emitter-collector circuit of a transistor momentarily to conduct each time the relay is energized and deenergized, respectively. Each time the transistor conducts it energizes another relay which momentarily energizes a bell chime to produce an audible signal.
