  • Patent number: 8498677
Abstract: A mobile phone has a mobile phone housing in which are integrated an actuator and a telephone module. The actuator can vibrate the housing to give a haptic or tactile alert to the user. The actuator is to vibrate in accordance with an input signal. The telephone module activates the input signal during the making of an outgoing call to a destination phone, so that the housing vibrates to alert the user while the destination phone is ringing. In another embodiment, the telephone module signals a display screen integrated in the housing, to show a graphic indicative of the outgoing call. In addition, the telephone module activates the input signal for the backlight of the display screen during the making of the outgoing call, so that the backlight flashes the display screen while the destination phone is ringing. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

  • Patent number: 8340972
Abstract: The use of SOLA speech time compression/expansion in the present invention method as a means to alter a speaker's talking rate by adjusting the speech rate at which people hear their own voice. A person speaks at a certain comfort rate, which is established and maintained by their own auditory system's capability to hear their own voice as they speak i.e., it is a self-auditory feedback mechanism. Changing the rate (112) at which a talker hears their own voice (130, 2012, 2024) will accordingly change their talking rate. This effect is achieved in this invention by employing a real time processing method (110, 402-416, FIG. 10) that temporarily adjusts the speech rate in an effort to impose this psychoacoustic condition which coerces the speaker into changing their talking rate. This invention permits users to adjust the comfort rate at which they normally speak (124) or to adjust the rate at which others speak to them through the use of a speech processing device or system.

Abstract: One embodiment of the disclosures made herein is a method for facilitating mediated communication. In such an embodiment of the disclosures made herein, a voice-based communication request transmitted from a first communication device is received by a mediation system. The voice based communication request is requesting voice-based communication between the first communication device and a second communication device. In response to receiving the request for voice-based communication, a capability of the first communication device for communicating via a prescribed text messaging protocol is determined. Facilitating presentation of a text messaging follow-through action at the second communication device is performed in response to determining that the first communication device is capable of communicating via the prescribed text messaging protocol.

Abstract: Inductive transmission to a hearing apparatus and in particular to a hearing device is to be improved. To this end, it is proposed to equip the hearing apparatus with two or three orthogonal coils. The coil signals are added with different signs and that signal which exhibits the highest level is forwarded from the resulting signals for further processing. It is thus possible to ensure an optimum reception quality in all alignments of the hearing apparatus.

Abstract: Devices and methods are presented to remotely dial wireless communications devices. A device is equipped with a microphone and a plurality of logic units to analyze incoming acoustic signals in the form of Morse code. Acoustic signals may comprise tapping sounds, or voice patterns to create the “dits” and “dahs” associated with Morse code. Background noise can be eliminated using digital signal processing (DSP). The device can be used in a variety of environments where phone numbers and addresses need to be dialed from a distance or in emergency situations.

  • Patent number: 8107595
Abstract: The present invention generally discloses a supervised paging, messaging background music and emergency voice evacuation system. In one embodiment, the system comprises at least one telephone zone controller and at least one telephone zone paging speaker splitter or addressable paging splitter. Specifically, telephone zone controller acts as a controlling authority for the routing and playback of audio in selectable zones. In cooperation with the telephone zone controller, the telephone zone paging speaker splitter is an addressable device that is capable of splitting an audio signal in different manners, e.g., in Class A mode or in Class B mode. The present system provides addressable functions that are not found in existing supervised paging, messaging background music and emergency voice evacuation system.

Abstract: In an alarm system, outgoing calls representing a sensed alarm condition are routed to one of several communications networks. The calls are routed by first initiating a telephone call to a defined number, in response to sensing the alarm condition, and then selecting one of plurality a plurality of available networks based on called number information. A communication over the chosen network is placed to signal the alarm condition. Routing may be performed at an interface module in communication with a conventional alarm panel.

Abstract: The invention is directed to efficient notification of the hearing impaired during emergencies. A message initiating agency and an administrator create an outbound message for delivery and further selects a number of campaign related parameters. A telecommunications interface module is provided that is capable of detecting the presence of a connected TTY device, and a connected TTY device logging system for recording in a database the occurrences of detection of a TTY devices associated with a particular telecommunications interface, or outbound message contact. The system delivers the campaign message to one or more telecommunications interfaces, delivers a TTY compatible message or a provides notification to said administrator of the detection of a connected TTY device, and records the incidence of failures to deliver the campaign message.

  • Patent number: 8005263
Abstract: A method and system for recognizing hand signs that include overlapping or adjoining hands from a depth image. A linked structure comprising multiple segments is generated from the depth image including overlapping or adjoining hands. The hand pose of the overlapping or adjoining hands is determined using either (i) a constrained optimization process in which a cost function and constraint conditions are used to classify segments of the linked graph to two hands or (ii) a tree search process in which a tree structure including a plurality of nodes is used to obtain the most-likely hand pose represented by the depth image. After determining the hand pose, the segments of the linked structure are matched with stored shapes to determine the sign represented by the depth image.
