  • Patent number: 7328848
Abstract: Techniques for transmitting data between devices based on two-dimensional symbols are disclosed, where the devices are generally not equipped with the traditional networking capabilities, or at least these traditional networking capabilities are not used for the data communication. According to one aspect of the techniques, two devices communicate with each other by displaying one or more two-dimensional symbols. Data is encoded into one or more symbols that are displayed on one of the devices. Images of the symbols are taken by another one of the devices to receive the data. These images are sequentially processed and decoded so that the data is now received. To accommodate various environments, the system is configured to adjust parameters pertaining to the symbols to achieve an optimum transmission rate.

  • Patent number: 6873687
Abstract: An audio messaging system receives audio input and records its contents. The audio input is then converted to a machine-readable representation for later audio playback. The audio input is also converted into a text representation using voice recognition techniques. The machine-readable and text representations are associated with one another and sent to selectable media for retrieval by the intended recipient. By associating the machine-readable representation with the text representation and providing them together, an immediately recognizable text message is provided whose contents can be verified precisely through playback of the machine-readable representation in at least one of a plurality of selectable media formats.

  • Patent number: 6094509
Abstract: A method and system for decoding a two-dimensional optical symbol in the spatial domain. The system determines the orientation of an imaged symbol in the spatial domain by using a template to derive a correlation coefficient between radially adjacent signals at a given angle of the template and comparing the correlation coefficients as the template is rotated with respect to the image. The angle of the highest correlation coefficient corresponds to the orientation of a set of symbol axes which include contiguous elements whose centers are collinear. The system then locates each individual information-encoded element of the symbol by using segments of the symbol defined by the axes, first adjusting for each segment the axis position and element size for subsequent determination of the location of all elements for decoding.

  • Patent number: 6069911
Abstract: A packet data transmission system is disclosed in which remote units, such as remote hand-held data gathering units, which normally communicate with remote base stations via a spread spectrum RF communications, are initialized via spread spectrum RF communications. A network chipping sequence is provided for encoding normal communications and an universal chipping sequence is provided for encoding communications relating to initialization of the remote units. The network chipping sequence is adjustable and must be initialized in each of the remote units to enable normal communications. The universal chipping code is fixed for all remote devices and base stations. Since the universal chipping code is fixed, spread spectrum RF communications of the initialization data, using the universal chipping code, can be effected even if the network chipping sequence is not initially set in the remote units.
