Patent number: 8548167Abstract: The present invention makes use of techniques such as those described by Boneh and Franklin to allow for the realization of a pseudo-asymmetric encryption scheme whereby one public encryption corresponds to a plurality of private decryption keys. This scheme therefore provides a solution to the problem of inefficient use of bandwidth in asymmetrical encryption schemes which inherently require that a plurality of encryptions of data be broadcast to a plurality of receivers. The invention further ensures that the advantage of traceability, typical found in asymmetric encryption schemes, is maintained due to the characteristic that each receiver uses a unique traceable decryption key. The traceability thus achieved by the present invention allows for the revocation of a security module which has been involved in the abusive use of conditional access data, particularly by means of clones of security modules whose security has been compromised.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2009Date of Patent: October 1, 2013Assignee: Nagravision S.A.Inventors: Pascal Junod, Alexandre Karlov, Nicolas Fischer

Patent number: 8549307Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus are disclosed which enable flexible insertion of forensic watermarks into a digital content signal using a common customization function. The common customization function flexibly employs a range of different marking techniques that are applicable to a wide range of forensic marking schemes. These customization functions are also applicable to pre-processing and post-processing operations that may be necessary for enhancing the security and transparency of the embedded marks, as well as improving the computational efficiency of the marking process. The common customization function supports a well-defined set of operations specific to the task of forensic mark customization that can be carried out with a modest and preferably bounded effort on a wide range of devices. This is accomplished through the use of a generic transformation technique for use as a “customization” step for producing versions of content forensically marked with any of a multiplicity of mark messages.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2011Date of Patent: October 1, 2013Assignee: Verance CorporationInventor: Joseph M. Publication number: 20120328099Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for performing anti-piracy countermeasures in order to prevent unauthorized access of protected content. A conditional access system may be modified to include a counter. The counter is incremented every time the conditional access system receives a request that is a potential indication of pirate activity. The counter may also be decremented every time the conditional access system receives a request indicative of legitimate activity. If the conditional access system receives a management message containing a key required to access content keys, the conditional access system cheeks the counter. The flow comprises successive bursts of data of encrypted contents with control words included in the control messages transmitted in parallel with said flow. The method is characterized in that it consists in inserting a control message in each transmitted burst of contents, said message containing at least one control word designed to decrypt the contents of said burst.Type: GrantFiled: July 4, 2006Date of Patent: October 2, 2012Assignee: Nagra France SASInventor: Bertrand Wendling

Patent number: 8280351Abstract: Disclosed procedures automatically identify a carrier-authorized mobile station and verify an account related identifier (e.g. mobile number) associated with the device, in response to start-up of an application in the device. In an example, application start-up causes the device to send a request to an application server, with the device's current IP address, MTN and a device identifier such as MEID or ESN. The server queries a AAA system of the network to retrieve the MTN that has been assigned the IP address. If the retrieved MTN matches the MTN passed to the server in the request, the server queries a network database such as DMD for the device identifier associated with the MTN. A match of the device identifier retrieved from the network database with that passed to the server via the request indicates perfect authenticity of the requesting device and its MTN.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 2010Date of Patent: October 2, 2012Assignee: Cellco PartnershipInventors: Shahid Ahmed, Venkat Gaddam

Patent number: 8280043Abstract: A system for protecting data in a security system generates and encodes a backup key for encoding long-lived secrets. The system generates a distribution plan for distributing cryptographic splits of the encoded backup key to selected persons based on geographic and organizational diversity. The distribution plan specifies a number M of the cryptographic splits to be generated and a number N of the cryptographic splits required to recover the backup key. The system processes utilize an init file comprising system parameters and state files each comprising parameters reflecting a state of the secure system after a transaction. Any of the state files may be used for any of the system processes. The state files and the init file are encoded by the backup key, thus protecting the long-lived secrets.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 2008Date of Patent: October 2, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Julian A. Patent number: 8266444Abstract: The invention relates to a chip for processing a content, comprising at least a microprocessor. Said chip includes an integrated non-volatile programmable memory for storing protection data and protected data, said protection data being intended to be used for authorizing/denying access to said protected data by said microprocessor under execution of a program. The invention allows to protect program and data dedicated to a chip-integrated conditional-access system and to protect features as external connections and downloaded data directly on the chip.Type: GrantFiled: November 11, 2003Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: Entropic Communications, Inc.Inventors: Eric Desmicht, Stéphane Mutz, Christophe Tison

Patent number: RE43993Abstract: A copy prevention method and apparatus of a digital magnetic recording/reproducing system performs the copy prevention function by encoding to insert a marker involving copy prevention function information and executing the function and allows a program supplier to realize a desired copy prevention function of various patterns, in which the marker formed by a control word for scrambling audio and video bit straps and copy prevention information for preventing an illegal copy is encrypted by an encoded key to be multiplexed with the audio and video bit strips scrambled by the control word. The marker transmitted is detected from the bit strips to be decrypted and analyzed by the encoded key to determine whether the copy is permitted or not, so that the detected marker is updated to be recorded on a video tape and the control word is produced from the marker to perform the descrambling to supply the result to a monitor to be displayed.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2007Date of Patent: February 12, 2013Assignee: LG Electronics Inc.Inventor: Tae Joon Park
