Abstract: A perforated collapsible spacer controllably takes up space between two bearings on an automotive pinion. The perforated collapsible spacer is formed from a steel sheet having longitudinal edges that are joined together in a form of a tube having longitudinal perforated sections formed in its central portion. As a pinion nut is tightened, an axial clamping force is applied to the collapsible spacer that is located between tail and head bearing cones, where the central portion of the collapsible spacer is caused to buckle, so as to adjust the final space between the bearing cones while a spring force is maintained on the bearings. Yield points of the central portion with the perforated sections that buckle, are controllable depending on the steel sheet material thickness, and the size, shape and quantity of perforations in the steel sheet.

Abstract: This invention is directed toward a bearing system for a rotating element, and more particularly directed toward an bearing system which provides an auxiliary bearing system if the primary bearing fails. Transfer of load from the failing primary bearing to one or more auxiliary bearings is initiated by conditions generated by the failing primary bearing such as abnormal heat generation or abnormal torque impulses. Alternately, the invention can be used to prevent primary bearing failure by transferring load to the secondary bearing system if the primary bearing is overloaded. The transfer of load is completely automatic requiring no human intervention. A signal or warning is, however, emitted by the bearing system to notify that loading has been transferred to one or more auxiliary bearings. The invention is directed toward an auxiliary bearing system for tapered roller bearings used in rail cars.

  • Patent number: 5722163
Abstract: Rolling element bearings capable of both axial and radial restraint are readily removably mounted on the shaft of each screw rotor so as to allow a clearance type radial fit between the bearing and shaft. A washer engages the inner race of the bearing which also engages a shim. A bolt squeezes the inner race between the washer and shim to secure the bearing in place while the shim thickness/height determines the position of the rotor within the casing.

  • Patent number: 5622378
Abstract: A shim and method for using the same for adjusting camber and/or toe of a wheel assembly wherein first and second tapered annular shims are coupled together to permit relative rotation therebetween and each of the first and second tapered annular shims have visible indicia thereon. A chart is consulted to obtain an indicium on the first tapered annular shim that is to be aligned with an indicium on the second tapered annular shim so that the first and second tapered annular shims may be rotated to align the indicium on each shim so that the aligned indicia may be placed in the wheel assembly at a reference point on the wheel assembly to make the required camber and/or toe adjustments.

  • Patent number: 5505595
Abstract: A scroll-type fluid displacement apparatus includes a compressor housing, which contains a compression mechanism and a driving mechanism operatively connected to one another. The compression mechanism includes a fixed scroll and an orbiting scroll interfitting at angular and radial offsets, and a rotation preventing mechanism which prevents rotation of the orbiting scroll during its orbital motion. The driving mechanism includes a drive shaft axially disposed within the housing and rotatably supported by an inner block, which is fixedly disposed within the housing. An axial movement regulating mechanism for regulating an axial movement of the driving mechanism is disposed between the inner block and an internal component of the compressor axially spaced from the inner block.

  • Patent number: 5466119
Abstract: A stack of parts, such as the stator disks of a turbomolecular pump, the parts being stacked alternately with spacers, includes a spacer having a knife-shaped deformable portion. When the stack is installed for the first time, the portion is compressed so as to take up the tolerances of the stack between abutment surfaces, e.g. delimited by a pump body and a corresponding casing. The invention applies in particular to turbomolecular pumps and aims to eliminate the operations of adjustment, re-machining, or matching that are usually required when installing a stator assembly.

  • Patent number: 5366299
Abstract: A hinge assembly for an articulated vehicle having front and rear frame portions joined at a pair of vertically aligned hinges. Each hinge includes a similar roller bearing assembly attached to the front frame portion and having a rotatable protruding trunnion. The rear frame portion includes recesses for receiving the trunnions and trunnion caps for retaining the trunnions. The trunnion of each bearing assembly includes a shoulder pin with a first bearing cone placed against the shoulder and a second bearing cone spaced apart from the first cone. A spacer ring received on the pin is biased against the second cone by an end cap secured to the end of the pin. A shim pack between the end cap and the end of the pin limits the amount by which the space between the cones may be to limit and control the pre-load of the bearing assembly.

  • Patent number: 5129156
Abstract: A motor support bearing assembly is provided for a live axle used in locomotives. A wheel is press fit on each end of the axle under high pressure, with a gear secured between the wheels adjacent the pinion end of the axle. The motor support bearing assembly is located between the plain end wheel at the commutator end and the axle gear at the other end, and includes a housing, a tapered roller bearing adjacent the plain end wheel, and another tapered roller bearing adjacent the axle gear. In the motor support bearing assembly process, a master spacer made of hardened metal is placed in a selected space in the assembly. The plain end wheel is pressed onto the axle under high pressure. Axial end play in the motor support bearings is set by applying a spike of additional pressure to the plain end wheel, pressing the bearings together tightly and in some cases pre-loading the bearings.

  • Patent number: 5115558
Abstract: Apparatus for determining shim thicknesses used to position antifriction bearings on shafts located in recesses formed in a casing. The shafts, fitted with the bearings, are installed in the casing and located with compensating discs or shims. An apparatus plate of predetermined thickness is located between the flanges of two casing halves, split perpendicular to the shaft axis. An axial force measuring cell is fitted on the antifriction bearing and the two casing halves are clamped together with a predetermined load. Axial forces produced by the clamping action of the casing on the shafts are measured during operation and correlated with a predetermined, desired axial force by a computer. The optimum thickness of the compensating discs for the individual shafts is calculated from data supplied to the computer.
