  • Patent number: 6926413
Abstract: The supporting structure for a rod integrator 300 includes, for example, holding members 350a, 350b for holding the rod integrator 300, and supporting units 360a, 360b for supporting the holding members. Each holding member 350a contacts by its planar portions (walls) respectively with two side surfaces of the rod integrator 300 adjacent to one another. The holding member 350a has a clearance such that the holding member does not contact with the edge shared by the two side surfaces of the rod integrator 300. The supporting unit 360a includes, for example, a supporting member 361a and screw 362a. The supporting unit 360a supports the rod integrator 300 by pressing of the screw 362a along the direction of the diagonal of the rod integrator 300 via the supporting member 361a. By doing so, chipping and scratching proximate to the edge can be reduced, and soiling of the reflecting plane can be prevented.

  • Patent number: 6795243
Abstract: A recirculating light polarizer utilizes a reflective polarizer on the exit face of a light integrator, such as a light pipe or light tunnel. Light is provided to the light integrator and light of one polarization is transmitted through the polarizer, the remaining light being reflected back into the integrator. The back-reflected light accumulates polarization shift before it eventually is reflected back to the polarizer. The reflected light is further homogenized on its trip back to the polarizer. This process is typically repeated several times to enhance the light output from the light pipe assembly, with some light being lost in each cycle due to various loss mechanisms. A polarization state modifier, such as a retarder plate or phase-shifting coatings, may be included in the recirculating light path to enhance polarization shift.

  • Patent number: 6771870
Abstract: The present invention describes an “L”-shaped sub-component for a hollow reflective tube used as integrator and/or angle converter for an illumination system. Furthermore, this invention details methods of manufacturing such hollow reflective tubes comprising (1) the steps of forming “L”-shaped sub-components substrates with or without self-alignment and/or mounting features, (2) applying a reflective coating to the inside of said sub-components (3) and assembling said sub-components into hollow tubes. Preferably both sides of the “L”-shaped sub-components have identical spectral and angular dependent coating performance. A particularly suitable method for manufacturing these sub-components substrates is molding them in plastic and over-coating them with a base coating layer to enhance their specular reflectivity.

  • Publication number: 20040146256
Abstract: In a fiber optic display system an array of pixels form a continuous viewable surface. Each pixel is formed by a bundle of one or more optical fibers which vector light to the pixels from one or more light sources. High density of pixels at the viewable surface is achieved by bundling small diameter optical fibers adapted for vectoring light from low density light sources. The two-dimensional geometry of the viewable surface is de-coupled from the light source which is arranged in a three dimensional space. The arrangement of light source into three dimensional space is accomplished by partitioning the light source into an array of light source planes. The arrangement of light source into a three dimensional array allows for the combined surface area of the planes to substantially exceed the display area of the viewable surface.

  • Patent number: 6751017
Abstract: A microscope for inspecting each optical fiber endface in a multi-fiber connector is disclosed. The microscope includes a tip for interfacing with the multi-fiber connector, a slider assembly connected to the tip, a slider chassis capable of constraining the movement of the slider assembly along an axis of motion, and a cam assembly which forces the slider assembly to move along its constrained axis of motion. The cam assembly is rotated preferably by means of a remotely located adjustment knob. This rotational motion of the cam assembly results in a force against the slider assembly which causes it to move along its constrained axis of motion and, hence, causes the translation of the optical imaging axis of the microscope along the same axis such that each optical fiber endface may be inspected.
