  • Patent number: 4168552
Abstract: A toilet seat to be raised or lowered over a conventional toilet bowl by a power control operated by the user. A pair of jacks, each having a rotary drive shaft, are disposed on each side of the bowl and are connected to a mounting plate which support the seat. The two jacks shafts are mechanically interconnected through a drive, which is located rearwardly and beneath the toilet bowl so that each jack will be raised or lowered the same distance thereby avoiding tilting. The mechanical interconnection is preferably a belt to lesson operating noise, but a chain and sprocket assembly could be used. A reversible electric motor acts as a power source to operate the drive. One jack shaft is pivotly mounted on its supporting base so as to adjust the position of its connected drive shaft to thereby tighten the belt type of drive to which the drive shaft is connected. A protective cover is located above the drive shaft to prevent any portion of the users clothing from becoming entangled within the drive.

  • Patent number: 4031576
Abstract: This disclosure pertains to an aid for invalids facilitating their ability to be seated and unseated from a water closet utilizing a pair of horizontally disposed arm rests and a hinged commode seat whose elevation and angular position above the water closet is under the manual control of the invalid. A manually operated lever enables a spring to bias the arm rests and the seat in an uppermost position for use by the invalid in the standing position. Manipulating the lever permits the arm rests to descend and the seat to assume a horizontal position with the spring resisting the downward forces exerted on the arm rests and the seat, by the user, as he is gently lowered into a seated position. Re-manipulation of the lever causes the spring to urge th arm rests in an upward position, and the seat to assume a near vertical position thereby aiding the invalid to achieve a standing posture.

  • Patent number: 4012797
Abstract: A single water closet or toilet fixture for dual functional use as either a western style fixture wherein the user is in the sitting position and normally facing forward, or an eastern style fixture wherein the user is in the squatting position and facing either in the forward direction or the aft direction depending on the embodiment utilized. An external footrest is provided on each side of the fixture for supporting the user in the squatting position. A movable toilet seat when folded down onto the lower bowl portion of the toilet fixture is proportioned for use in the sitting position; and when the toilet seat is raised to an upright position, a fore and aft elongated receptical or bowl portion is exposed which is relatively narrow in width for straddling and is proportioned for use in the squatting position. Also, formed integral with the bowl portion of the fixture, is a urine spray shield which nestles under the contoured toilet seat and is functional in both the sitting and the squatting positions.

  • Patent number: 3969778
Abstract: A toilet aid is designed for use with a W.C. to assist disabled, elderly and infirm persons using the W.C. The aid is constructed for attachment to the W.C. pan using the normal seat-attachment bolt holes provided in the pan. An arm structure has side support arms which extend fowardly on either side of a user when seated on the toilet seat. The arms have inturned end portions to provide front support for the user, these portions being movable to the side to a front entry position which permits free entry and exit between the arms. When the arm portions are in this entry position the main side portions of the arms remain in their normal side support position, thus being positioned to assist the user when maneuvering into and out of the seated position. The aid can be used with all normal W.C. suites with a standard toilet seat.

  • Patent number: 3931650
Abstract: A urine collection container carried by a person confined to a wheelchair includes a drain tube which is connected to a valve mounted on the person's wheelchair to permit the person, unattended, to empty the contents of the collection container onto the ground or into a floor drain beneath the wheelchair. The valve may be manually operated, as by a lever within reach of the wheelchair occupant, or may be operated using a solenoid. The latter construction permits remote operation of the valve utilizing a low current sensitive switch operable, for example, by a quadraplegic. In addition, the solenoid operated valve permits the use of a timing circuit which automatically closes the valve a predetermined period of time after the valve is open to prohibit the valve from accidentally being left open and additionally to permit handicapped persons to both open and close the valve with a single switch operation.
