Abstract: Conventional curable polymers tend to shrink upon curing whilst low shrinkage ultraviolet light curing polymers have a problem with respect to curing below surface areas of a component. By providing light transmitting elements and/or local ultraviolet light source precursors, greater depth of ultraviolet curing can be achieved and therefore enhanced acceptability with regard to component manufacture. The light transmitting elements may be formed by optic fibers or coatings to existing reinforcing fibers or through consideration of the refractive index of the cured and uncured polymer to create light transmission paths through the component. Ultraviolet light source precursors can be activated by heat or a “seed” light exposure or vibration to create localised ultraviolet curing of the polymer thereabout.

Abstract: Illuminated warning signs of familiar shapes employ back lighting through letters of smoked translucent plastic or glass. The back lighting is produced by incandescent lights or light emitting diodes located behind the letters. Thus, for example, in daylight a stop sign will appear to have black or white letters in contrast to the red background of the stop sign, but at night the letters will glow. Since warning signs provide shape to indicate the nature of the warning, the perimeter of the sign is likewise caused to glow brightly by providing one or a plurality of light pipes illuminated by lamps or a plurality of light emitting diodes. Thus, the combination of the word and the perimeter glowing brightly make clear the nature of the warning despite the sign being otherwise obscured.

The lateral wall has an incident surface. A lighting device is disposed adjacent the incident surface, and has a frame connected to the light guide panel, and a light source mounted within the frame to supply light towards the incident surface. A pair of transparent cover plates, which have a refractive index smaller than that of the light guide panel, cover respectively the first and second surfaces to return inward the light emanated outward from the first and second surfaces so that the light is efficiently propagated within the light guide panel. One of the cover plates has a pattern that forms a light exiting area.

Abstract: A fiber optic display apparatus consists of a plurality of optical fibers which convey a projected image from an input, or first surface, to a display, or second surface, whose area is greater than or equal to that of the first surface, such that any image projected on to the first surface appears enlarged on the second surface. The second surface is comprised of tiles which attach to adjoining tiles by means of flexible tabs and pliable locator rods in such a fashion as to allow the second surface to follow general contours (e.g. concave or convex), while the optical fiber bundles from each tile are collected into a fixture to form the first planar surface. Because of the modular design of the display it can be assembled or disassembled rapidly.
